Block, M.D. SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AT YOUR LIBRARY f one ascends the stairs of the Central Library to the second fl oor, turns right, walking past an area of study tables Iand chairs, you eventually fi nd yourself confronted by a pair of glass-paneled doors. The signage over the doors reads, “Special Collections”. Stepping over the threshold is a transforming experience. One enters a quiet room dominated by a huge library table surrounded by comfortable chairs. Wooden shelving lines all the walls. The contents of the shelves are visible through the metal mesh doors which cover the shelved cases. The shelves and the stacks in the adjoining room contain books, pamphlets, newspapers and news clippings, memorabilia, maps and atlases, documents from the world of politics, entertainment, law enforcement, etc. Here is an archive of Glendale and its environs. Overseeing the collection is Mike Shea, Special Collections Director. The following is an interview conducted with Mr. Shea by the Newsletter editor: First, Mr. Shea, tell us something about yourself: and magazine clippings covering a wide array of subjects My offi cial title is Librarian Specialist/Local History. I and Glendale residents, which benefi ts genealogists and have worked in the Reference Department at the Glendale historians alike. Library Connection @ Adams Square The Library’s newest branch was recently honored with two awards. The Pasadena & Foothill American Institute of Architects recognized the Library and Osborn Architects for the interior design of the renovated building. The Huntington Library Art Gallery rehabilitation and the Pasadena City Hall Seismic Upgrade also received Honors Awards. In addition, a Case Study of the Adams Square site in Library Journal’s Libraries By Design special issue praised the dynamic, adaptable interior space that makes the most of the building’s unique features. On a crisp autumn day in November, 2007, dozens of photographers packed their equipment and took up a unique challenge: to “capture” the essence of the city of Glendale, California in a single day. Photographers of all stripes —professionals, students and amateurs—combed every corner of Glendale looking for just the right subject matter to represent the many facets of this historic, vibrant and diverse city.
