We collaborate with the Glendale Housing Department, Police Department, Glendale Youth Alliance, Pacific Clinics, Didi Hirsch, Ascencia, and YMCA, Las Caritas an Auxiliary of Assistance League of Glendale, Shoes That Fit, Glendale Council PTA, Assistance League of Glendale - Operation School Bell and Los Angeles County of Education. Healthy Start uses various services such as parenting classes to increase parent involvement, and family empowerment. We create systems and links among participants, facilitate communication, and focus our attention on data and outcomes. Mission Healthy Start’s mission is to improve lives of At-risk, Foster, and Homeless Youth by providing support in social, emotional, and academic support. 1 Healthy Start Collaborative Healthy Start Collaborative is composed of broad-based groups including representation from all stakeholders: parents, school staff, administrators, counselors, governmental agencies, ethnic groups, faith and community-based organizations. Healthy Start Collaborative members are responsible for overseeing the planning process, ensuring a diverse and representative constituency and make the final decisions on the selection and prioritization of goals and structure of the operational plan. Each collaborating agency supports the Healthy Start department in assisting the students and families with their needs. Intervention programs are offered to families through parenting classes from the “Parent Project” curriculum and other varies topics such as Attendance and Dropout, Depression, Suicide Prevention, Bullying, and Cyber-Bullying. Tutoring is also available as an intervention to our Foster and Homeless Youth. Healthy Start receives its referrals from school administrators, counselors, psychologists, nurses, intercultural department, student support services, community agencies, other support staff and self-referrals. In the course of the 2014-2015 school year, total of 15,311 referrals were made to our office for various needs. Healthy Start provided the following support: Clothing 182, Christmas gifts including gift cards 392, Glendale Youth Alliance 4, Food 353, Mental Health services 212, Uniforms through Operation School Bell 582, Parenting Classes 76, Salvation Army after school referrals 2, School supplies and backpacks 159, Shelter and housing referrals 90, Shoes 567, Thanksgiving baskets 50, Transportation assistance to 12,324 families, which included International Institute of Los Angeles (Bus Tokens), TAP Cards, Beeline passes and Tutoring support for 35 students in need. Healthy Start has a strong relationship and collaboration with the Glendale Council PTA and Las Caritas group with food drives throughout GUSD schools that support our food pantry. The participation of 8 schools (Verdugo Woodlands ES, Glendale High School, Glenoaks ES, Valley View ES, Lincoln ES, R. D. White ES, La Crescenta ES, and Wilson MS) was greatly appreciated. In 2014-2015 school years the pantry was accessed 353 times. Healthy Start also collaborates the annual Toy Drive with Glendale Council PTA, Glendale Fire Department, Glendale Schools Management Association and personal donors in the community. As a result 392 toys and gift cards were distributed to families in need. Shoes That Fit is another valued organization that supports Healthy Start with donating shoes to GUSD students in need. One hundred and thirty seven pairs of shoes were distributed in 2014- 2015 school year. Healthy Start families that qualified to receive additional support also received transportation assistance, school supplies, backpacks, gift cards, counseling services, and tutoring services (if needed) to ensure that students are supported social-emotionally and that they have the successful tools to succeed in their studies. Block, M.D. SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AT YOUR LIBRARY f one ascends the stairs of the Central Library to the second fl oor, turns right, walking past an area of study tables Iand chairs, you eventually fi nd yourself confronted by a pair of glass-paneled doors. The signage over the doors reads, “Special Collections”. Stepping over the threshold is a transforming experience. One enters a quiet room dominated by a huge library table surrounded by comfortable chairs. Wooden shelving lines all the walls. The contents of the shelves are visible through the metal mesh doors which cover the shelved cases. The shelves and the stacks in the adjoining room contain books, pamphlets, newspapers and news clippings, memorabilia, maps and atlases, documents from the world of politics, entertainment, law enforcement, etc. Here is an archive of Glendale and its environs. Overseeing the collection is Mike Shea, Special Collections Director. The following is an interview conducted with Mr. Shea by the Newsletter editor: First, Mr. Shea, tell us something about yourself: and magazine clippings covering a wide array of subjects My offi cial title is Librarian Specialist/Local History. The Pasadena & Foothill American Institute of Architects recognized the Library and Osborn Architects for the interior design of the renovated building. The Huntington Library Art Gallery rehabilitation and the Pasadena City Hall Seismic Upgrade also received Honors Awards. In addition, a Case Study of the Adams Square site in Library Journal’s Libraries By Design special issue praised the dynamic, adaptable interior space that makes the most of the building’s unique features. On a crisp autumn day in November, 2007, dozens of photographers packed their equipment and took up a unique challenge: to “capture” the essence of the city of Glendale, California in a single day.
