They are also recognized for their contri butions to science, the industrial revolution, reform of banking and insis tence on ethical business practices. However, they are not noted for their contributions to the arts, which are in fact minimal. Wtthregard to the the atre, early Quakers would probably be numbered among Jonas Barish's "legions of hard-shelled, mole-eyed fanatics" who occasionally have filled the ranks of theatre-bashers (The Anti-theatrical Prejudice, 2) . -

Walsh's "Philip II" is one of the finest of pro-catholic histories, and actually perhaps the best researched book in history, I mean in comparing it to the other stuff out there on the subject. The man was clearly led by Heaven on a mission to Set the Record Straight. It has to be read to be believed, what a collosaul [? More interesting and with more complex plot lines than most novels, it digs deep to penetrate what actually went on. It actually can hardly be recommended enough. Although my review here is probably a bit over the top, that is how I feel. Shipwreck of Civilization Published by Thriftbooks. In reviewing this, the fourth volume of Dr. Carroll's monumental history of Christendom, we feel compelled to invoke Belloc's apt description of the Reformation epic, as the "shipwreck of civilization". For indeed, that is what it was. Sadly, we see emerging in Dr. Carroll's meticulously documented account yet more evidence of his desire to shield the reader from a bit of the truth of the matter. While there is a great deal of wonderful revelation contained herein, that which is excluded is even more dispositive of the shipwreck. We wonder even more than in previous volumes why Dr. Carroll is so selective in his presentation. -

Brown, Co-advisor Daniel Farrell, Co-advisor Diana Raffman Sukjae Lee Donald Hubin Copyright by Ryan Clifford Jordan 2009 Abstract I argue for an association theory of musical expression, whereby music acquires its expressive character through associations with extra - musical content. Musical works can be roughly categorized into two groups: absolute works—works, such as Bach’s “Invention No. 13 in A minor” and Scriabin’s “Prelude in B major, Op. 2, No.2”, that are not accompanied by any descriptive title, text, or program—and non-absolute works—works, such as Schubert’s “Ave Maria” and Williams’ Theme from Harry Potter, that are. I argue that the best approach to developing a theory of musical expression begins with an analysis of non-absolute music. Analyzing non-absolute music, I show that musical expression is intimately tied up with associations that stem from those texts, titles, and programs. The benefit of this approach is that it straightforwardly explains not only non-absolute music’s expressive properties, but also how absolute music has its expressive properties. I argue that expression is tied up not only with whole pieces but also with musical elements such as timbre, rhythm, tempo, and melodic gestures. These musica l elements are the same in both absolute and non-absolute music, so associations established with non-absolute music simply carry through to the absolute musical ii works. -

BABICH Nietzsche’s conception of a gay science is alluringly seductive, comic, and light – and accordingly many readers have celebrated it as the art of laughter. And, to be sure, the first edition of The Gay Science began with a teasing series of light, joking rhymes.1 Taking this teasing further, the 1887 title page replaces the 1882 epigraph from Emerson with a gently unserious rhyme, adding a fifth book and finishing it off with an additional cycle of songs – Songs of Prince Vogelfrei2 – invoking at once the knightly as well as the chastely3 erotic character of the troubadour (and recurring in the arch allusions of Nietzsche’s Ecce Homo). -
