Tinti5 SUMMARY The Italian scientists have a long tradition of studies and research on many large pelagic species including, among others, the small tunas. The various small tuna species are important for the Italian fishery since many centuries, mostly from a socio-economical point of view. Some non- indigenous species are now present in the ICCAT Convention area. This is the first attempt to list together the many papers published so far by Italian scientists, concerning the biology of these species, the fisheries and many other scientific and cultural issues. The aim of this paper is to provide an annotated bibliography, with specific key words, even if it is surely incomplete, because of the many papers published over the years. This bibliography, which includes 309 annotated citations, was set together to serve the scientists and to help them in finding some rare references that might be useful for their work. RÉSUMÉ Les scientifiques italiens ont une longue tradition d'études et de recherches sur de nombreuses de espèces de grands pélagiques y compris, entre autres, les espèces de thonidés mineurs. Les différentes espèces de thonidés mineurs sont importantes pour la pêche italienne depuis de nombreux siècles, principalement d'un point de vue socio-économique. Certaines espèces non autochtones sont maintenant présentes dans la zone de la Convention de l’ICCAT. Il s'agit de la première tentative de répertorier les nombreux articles publiés à ce jour par des scientifiques italiens concernant la biologie de ces espèces, les pêcheries et de nombreuses autres questions scientifiques et culturelles. -

This is the first attempt to list together the many papers published so far by Italian scientists, concerning the biology of this species, the fisheries and many other scientific and cultural issues. The aim of this paper is to provide a sort of annotated bibliography, with specific key words, even if it is surely incomplete, because of the many papers published over the years. So far, we found 164 papers on albacore. This updated bibliography was set together to serve the scientists and to help them in finding some rare references that might be useful for their work. RÉSUMÉ Les scientifiques italiens ont une longue tradition d'études et de recherches sur le germon (Thunnus alalunga). Cette espèce est l'une des plus importantes pour la pêche italienne depuis de nombreux siècles, même si elle a été souvent négligée. Il s'agit de la première tentative de répertorier les nombreux articles publiés à ce jour par des scientifiques italiens concernant la biologie de cette espèce, les pêcheries et de nombreuses autres questions scientifiques et culturelles. Le but de ce document est de fournir une sorte de bibliographie annotée, avec des mots clés spécifiques, même si elle est sûrement incomplète, en raison des nombreux articles publiés au cours des années. -

At first, raw samples of these species and a mix intended as internal control were prepared for the authentication of fish muscle tissue of the genus Thunnus sp., Auxis sp. and Sarda sp. DNA from raw muscle tissue, the mix and samples was extracted with the DNeasy mericon Food Kit (Qiagen GmbH, Hilden, Germany). The concentration and purity of DNA in raw samples were evaluated using a spectrophotometer. Primers and probe sequences were specifically designed to identify the selected species. In addition, primers and a probe for the endogenous 12S rRNA gene were designed to determine the presence of amplifiable fish (especially tuna) DNA in samples. Furthermore, the species specificity of the designed primers and probes was verified in DNA samples of various tuna and bonito species. Limit of detection for the selected species was calculated as well as the coefficient of determination R2 and efficiency of real-time PCR testing was determined. To evaluate the developed real-time PCR methods, 70 commercial tuna products were analysed. The results show that mislabelling of fish products can still be encountered and, moreover, the presence of an additional species can be identified. -
Tuna Spawning Grounds Off the Balearic Archipelago

Velez-Belchí SUMMARY The waters surrounding the Balearic archipelago are characterized by the confluence of Atlantic and Mediterranean water masses. Consequently, the water masses’ convergence imparts on the area an intense geostrophic circulation of water masses and hydrographic processes, particularly suitable for the spawning of a number of tuna species, among which frigate tuna (Auxis rochei) is most abundant. The TUNIBAL project whose main aim was focused on bluefin (Thunnus thynnus) larval ecology allowed acquiring information on its related species during the 2003-2005 spawning seasons. This document presents information on the interannual variability of bullet tuna larval abundance and on their distribution pattern observed throughout these years. Overall, the 2003 Mediterranean heat wave appears to have affected the strong interannual differences observed of bullet tuna larval abundance. Although, their larvae are widely spread over the area, major concentrations tend to be closer to the coast than the other tuna species spawning in the area, particularly bluefin and albacore (T. alalunga). Main larval concentrations of bullet larvae were located between the islands of Mallorca and Menorca shelf and slope regions. RÉSUMÉ Les eaux aux alentours de l’archipel des Baléares se caractérisent par la confluence des masses d’eau atlantiques et méditerranéennes. Par conséquent, la convergence des masses d’eau confère à cette région une intense circulation géostrophique des masses d’eau et des processus hydrographiques, particulièrement propices au frai de nombreuses espèces de thonidés, dont le bonitou (Auxis rochei) qui est l’espèce la plus abondante. -

Accepted March, 2011 The study aims to identify the age and growth parameters of bullet tuna (Auxis rochei ) in Turkish waters. The fish were caught from the Turkish Mediterranean coasts between December 2008 and December 2009. A total of 186 dorsal fin spines obtained from the specimens were analyzed for ageing and growth studies. The fork length of the aged individuals ranged from 34 to 48 cm for males and from 35 to 46.5 cm for the females. Fish ages ranged 1 to 5 years old and the mean lengths by age were calculated for both sexes. Growth parameter estimates were calculated from 150 cut spine sections which provided readable growth annuli by sex. The growth parameters based on standard von bertalanffy growth function are the following: for males, L∞ (asymptotic length) is equal to 60.417 cm; k (growth coefficient) is equal to 0.159; t0 (age at zero length) is equal to − 4.311; for females, L∞ is equal to 49.238 cm; k is equal to 0.312; t0 is equal to −3.011; for both sexes, L∞ is equal to 57.388 cm; k is equal to 0.181and t0 is equal to −4.155, respectively. -
Preliminary Stomach Contents Analysis of Bullet Tuna Auxis Rochei (Risso, 1810) in Tunisian Waters

Jarboui3 SUMMARY The diet composition of bullet tuna, Auxis rochei (Risso, 1810) was studied using 234 specimens collected from January 2015 to June 2016 in the coastal areas of Tunisian waters. Among 234 stomachs examined, 126 were empty (%VI = 53.85). After the stomach contents analysis, 13 prey taxa belonging to 11 families were identified. This study was based mainly on the evolution of the index of relative importance (IRI) with respect to sex, fish size and season. Auxis rochei are carnivorous fish that feed opportunistically on whatever abundant resource is available in the environment with a preference for Teleosts, crustaceans and cephalopods. Teleosts were found in the majority of stomachs, with a total relative importance (%IRI) of 80.65% % and Sardinella aurita was the most important prey species (%IRI = 74.17). All other prey (crustaceans and molluscs) are secondary or incidental. RÉSUMÉ La composition du régime alimentaire de 234 spécimens de bonitou (Auxis rochei) (Risso, 1810) recueillis entre janvier 2015 et juin 2016 dans les zones côtières des eaux tunisiennes a été étudiée. Parmi les 234 estomacs examinés, 126 étaient vides (% VI = 53,85). Au terme d’une analyse des contenus stomacaux, 13 taxons proie appartenant à 11 familles ont été identifiés. Cette étude reposait essentiellement sur l’évolution de l’indice de l’importance relative (IRI) en ce qui concerne le sexe, la taille des poissons et la saison. -

Scoping is the first stage of the process to amend a fishery management plan after an issue has been identified (see steps in the process below). Scoping has two main purposes: (1) to inform you that the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (“SAFMC” or “Council”) may propose new regulations or change existing ones and (2) to allow you the opportunity to comment on the issue or identify other related issues that may need the Council’s attention. You will have more opportunity to provide comments as the amendment is developed; however, scoping is the first and best opportunity to make suggestions for the Council to consider before an amendment is developed.
