December 2014 Black Belt Test

The theme of the 2014 Black Belt test is Ethos . By definition, ethos is a Greek word meaning “character” and is used to describe the guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize a community, nation, or ideology. Aim High and its staff are dedicated to upholding the core values that define us as martial artists, such as respect, honor, commitment, integrity, just to name a few.

Our curriculum is always changing, developing, and being designed for use in today’s world, thanks to these guiding beliefs. . Basic Steps for success in your Black Belt Test

Read this packet in it’s entirety. Read it, make notes, ask questions, and mark it up. You ABSOLUTELY need to do this step. You do not want to get to the final weeks of your test and find out that you missed a requirement.

Get organized Get a calendar, app, or program to help you keep track of when things are due and when you need to attend certain events.

Get started Your test starts NOW. Do not wait a week or two to get going on your requirements, or you will fall behind.

Get a coach/supporter Find someone outside of your team who will hold you accountable for your training. A parent, sibling, or friend is great for this! They are also the person you need to go to when you need a little extra “push” to keep your momentum.

Get your Team working Plan workouts before/after class time, use free space on the workout floors at Aim High. Things go easier and difficulties are surmounted by use the power of your TEAM.

Ask Questions You are not alone in this endeavor! Your primary coaches for the December Ethos Black Belt test are:

Print Name Here After Reading This Page______Test expectations/requirements

You will be graded over the next 6 months on the following areas:  Event/Class Attendance  Leadership Project & Interviews/Profiles  Personal Training (training outside of your normal classes)  Journaling  Personal Video  Performance of overall skills

The purpose of these expectations is to allow the student a deeper understanding of both the techniques being practiced, and how the student themselves are transformed through the process of daily repetition in preparation for earning an advanced Black Belt degree.

Repetition is the key to building habits, both positive and negative. It is important to analyze the physical activity you are doing to be sure that a positive motor pattern (neuro-muscular pattern) is being built, along with your habit of making/taking time to do the activity.

Excuses: Don’t make them. Do the work you need to get done so you will perform to your maximum potential. Black Belt focus and determination is expected and required at this level of training. You are the example for the color belts and lower rank Black Belts

On the following pages you will have several workbook sheets you can fill out to keep track of your practice.

You have about 26 weeks to complete your tasks.

We understand that some days you may do more work than others and that is ok. But we need to see you document what you do on the days you do work. We are also looking at the pattern in which you are doing the work. If we see that you “crammed” all of your work into the last few weeks, you may be asked to leave this testing group and test with the next group in June 2015.

 Two (2) - Black Belt Prep Classes (Sat. 1:30pm-3:00pm, dates TBA), you must attendONE or more each month

 There will be 3 scheduled Saturday Evaluations/Check Points to check your performance on Conditioning and Poomsae. You will need to attend all of these. If you cannot attend you must schedule a Private Evaluation with one of the staff.

Your regular class attendance must continue at a minimum of twice per week. The staff realizes that a portion of this test happens during summer break, and you may already have vacation plans. Please attend additional classes before or after a scheduled vacation.

Print Name Here After Reading This Page______Leadership Project

Being a Black Belt and testing for an advanced ranks is being a leader both inside and outside our school. The purpose of a community leadership project is to work on your leadership, organizational, and “make it happen” skills.

There are 3 core requirements to your leadership project:

 You are the leader and organizer of the project (parents may assist)  The project benefits our community  The project impacts and involves a group of people

For project ideas/inspiration please go to the student section of the Aim High website. There is a list of 364 projects to get you started. Once you have decided on a project you must submit it online here:

www.aimhighma.org/project

Personal Training (training outside of your normal classes)

You will be expected to do a LOT of practice outside of normal class time. There are many pages in this packet that have grids/charts where you can document your training. If you get in the habit, immediately, of documenting your training you will be well prepared and under MUCH less stress than if you don’t.

Some extra training you will have to do is:

 For Junior (under 14 students) complete 50 repetitions of each required BLACK BELT poomsae  For Senior (15 and up) complete 100 repetitions of each required BLACK BELT poomsae  Balance on a ball for 3 hours (total, not at one time…)  Perform 3000 kicks, either Front Kick or Side Kick modeling your technique on how World Level poomsae athletes perform it.

Print Name Here After Reading This Page______Journaling

Each week you will need to do a short (or long if you like) journal entry to the Ethos blog page. Juniors, who do not have access to the internet should have their parents email their entries to Master Null.

You will also pick one week, any week between now and your final testing week, to make a food journal of your food intake over 7 days.

Personal Video

Create a short video (2-10 minutes) about why you are continuing the journey to your next Black Belt degree.

If you need to borrow a video camera, please check one out from Master Null

Adults will need to perform each required BLACK BELT poomsae (NOT the Taegeuk poomsae) 50 times, and Juniors 100 times. In this packet there are 2 pages for each poomsae: 1 page for instructor input at the 3 evaluations you will do over the next 6 months, and 1 page for you to record your repetition progress.

Since the different Black Belt degrees have different requirements, you will need to write the name of YOUR required poomsae on each page as needed.

“Attitude” by Charles Swindoll

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than success, than what other people think say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It make or break a company.. a church.. a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.

The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you.. We are in charge of our attitudes.

Print Name Here After Reading This Page______Black Belt Progression

Youth students, who are 14 years old or younger, need more time in rank to develop the physical traits of a Black Belt as well as the mental maturity associated with Black Belt rank. To assist with that we have the Youth ranking system and minimum time in rank for each level. Once a student turns 15, they may progress at the Adult level of Black Belt ranks, without loosing any rank. (IE a youth 2nd dan, would be able to test for 3rd dan once they become 15, assuming they have had enough time in grade, and could perform the requirements.

Youth Black Belt Ranks will have all writing/bars embroidered in Silver. As they progress through the ranks writing will continue to be in Silver until they turn 15 and/or test for a new belt at that point.

Times below are “minimum time” in rank. Some students may, and often do, stay at rank longer to ensure that their skill level warrants the promotion.
