TREHUB University of Toronto, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada We quantified the relative simplicity of frequency ratios and reanalyzed data from several studies on the perception of simultaneous and sequential tones. Simplicity offrequency ratios accounted for judgments of consonance and dissonance and for judgments of similarity across a wide range of tasks and listeners. It also accounted for the relative ease of discriminating tone patterns by musically experienced and inexperienced listeners. These findings confirm the generality ofpre vious suggestions of perceptual processing advantages for pairs of tones related by simple fre quency ratios. Interval Cycles and the Emergence of Major-Minor Tonality
Empirical Musicology Review Vol. 5, No. 3, 2010 Modes on the Move: Interval Cycles and the Emergence of Major-Minor Tonality MATTHEW WOOLHOUSE Centre for Music and Science, Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom ABSTRACT: The issue of the emergence of major-minor tonality is addressed by recourse to a novel pitch grouping process, referred to as interval cycle proximity (ICP). An interval cycle is the minimum number of (additive) iterations of an interval that are required for octave-related pitches to be re-stated, a property conjectured to be responsible for tonal attraction. It is hypothesised that the actuation of ICP in cognition, possibly in the latter part of the sixteenth century, led to a hierarchy of tonal attraction which favoured certain pitches over others, ostensibly the tonics of the modern major and minor system. An ICP model is described that calculates the level of tonal attraction between adjacent musical elements. The predictions of the model are shown to be consistent with music-theoretic accounts of common practice period tonality, including Piston’s Table of Usual Root Progressions. The development of tonality is illustrated with the historical quotations of commentators from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, and can be characterised as follows. At the beginning of the seventeenth century multiple ‘finals’ were possible, each associated with a different interval configuration (mode). By the end of the seventeenth century, however, only two interval configurations were in regular use: those pertaining to the modern major- minor key system. The implications of this development are discussed with respect interval cycles and their hypothesised effect within music.

Music 11, 7/10/06 Scales/Intervals We already know half steps and whole steps (semitones and tones). We call these “seconds.” Adjacent pitch names are always called seconds, but because the space between adjacent pitch names can vary, there are different types of second: Major second (M2) = whole step = whole tone Minor second (m2) = half step = semitone In a major scale, all the seconds are major seconds (M2) except 2: E-F and B-C are minor seconds (m2). Inversion Suppose we take the two notes that make up a second, and “flip” them over—that is, lets put the lower note up an octave, so that it lies above the other note. The distance between E-D is now D-E. We say that the “inversion” of E-D is D-E, and the interval that results is not a second, but instead a seventh. More specifically, the inversion of a major second (M2) is a minor seventh (m7). There are two things to remember about inversions: 1. When an interval is inverted, their numbers add-up to 9. M2 and m7 are inversions of each other, and we can see that 2 + 7 = 9. 2. When a major interval is inverted, its quality becomes minor, and vise versa. The inversion of a M2 is a m7. Major has become minor. Likewise, the inversion of a minor second (m2) is a major seventh (M7). By these rules, we can invert other intervals, like thirds. HIPKINS (of John Broadwood and Sons). Received October 30, 1884. Musical Scales are said to be Harmonie or Non-harmonic according as they are or are not adapted for playing in harmony. Most accounts of non-harmonio scales, such as the Greek, Arabic, and Persian, either (I) are derived from native theoretieians, who give the comparative lengths of the strings for the several notes, whence, on the assumption that the numbers of vibrations are inversely proportional to the lengths (which is only approximately correct in practice), the intervals from note to note are inferred ; or (2) are attempts to express the effects of the intervals by the European equally tempered scale. The former when reduced, as in Professor J. I). N. Land’s “ Gramme Arabe,” 1884:, is the best that can be done without hearing the scales themselves. The latter is utterly delusive and mis- leading. Having about 100 tuning-forks, the pitch of each of which has been determined by Scheibler’s forks (see “ Proe. Roy. 800.,” June, 1880, vol. 30, p. 525), and having had an opportunity of hearing the notes themselves produced on various instruments, and having had the great advantage of being assisted by Mr. A. .I. Hipkins’s musical ear, which is wonderfully acute to detect and estimate minute differences of pitch, and without which I could have done little,it I have been able, I believe for the ﬁrst time, to take down the actual pitch of the notes in various existing non-harmonie scales far better than it was possible to do With the siren or the monoohord, which are not only difﬁcult to manipulate and to carry about, but at the best are very apt to mis- lead.

The Consecutive-Semitone Constraint on Scalar Structure: A Link Between Impressionism and Jazz1 Dmitri Tymoczko The diatonic scale, considered as a subset of the twelve chromatic pitch classes, possesses some remarkable mathematical properties. It is, for example, a "deep scale," containing each of the six diatonic intervals a unique number of times; it represents a "maximally even" division of the octave into seven nearly-equal parts; it is capable of participating in a "maximally smooth" cycle of transpositions that differ only by the shift of a single pitch by a single semitone; and it has "Myhill's property," in the sense that every distinct two-note diatonic interval (e.g., a third) comes in exactly two distinct chromatic varieties (e.g., major and minor). Many theorists have used these properties to describe and even explain the role of the diatonic scale in traditional tonal music.2 Tonal music, however, is not exclusively diatonic, and the two nondiatonic minor scales possess none of the properties mentioned above. Thus, to the extent that we emphasize the mathematical uniqueness of the diatonic scale, we must downplay the musical significance of the other scales, for example by treating the melodic and harmonic minor scales merely as modifications of the natural minor. The difficulty is compounded when we consider the music of the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in which composers expanded their musical vocabularies to include new scales (for instance, the whole-tone and the octatonic) which again shared few of the diatonic scale's interesting characteristics. 11 – Music temperament and pitch Music sounds Every music instrument, including the voice, uses a more or less well defined sequence of music sounds, the notes, to produce music. The notes have particular frequencies that are called „pitch“ by musicians. The frequencies or pitches of the notes stand in a particular relation to each other. There are and were different ways to build a system of music sounds in different geographical regions during different historical periods. We will consider only the currently dominating system (used in classical and pop music) that was originated in ancient Greece and further developed in Europe. Pitch vs interval Only a small part of the people with normal hearing are able to percieve the absolute frequency of a sound. These people, who are said to have the „absolute pitch“, can tell what key has been hit on a piano without looking at it. The human ear and brain is much more sensitive to the relations between the frequencies of two or more sounds, the music intervals. The intervals carry emotional content that makes music an art. For instance, the major third sounds joyful and affirmative whereas the minor third sounds sad. The system of frequency relations between the sounds used in music production is called music temperament . 1 Music intervals and overtone series Perfect music intervals (that cannot be fully achieved practically, see below) are based on the overtone series studied before in this course. College Music Society Great Lakes Regional Conference Chicago, IL 2012 1 LECTURE NOTES (to be read in a conversational manner) Today, Iʼd like to introduce you to an analytical system that Iʼve designed for microtonal music called “Fractional Set Theory.” <hit slide 2> In this system, microtones are represented as pitch classes in a decimal format. In traditional set theory, the pitch “C” is referred to as “pitch class 0,” and “C-sharp” is called “pitch class 1.” “D-flat is also considered “pitch class 1.” So, if “E” is pitch class “4” and “E-flat” is pitch class “3,” in fractional set theory, “E- quarter-flat” would be pitch class “3.5.” In this example from Ivesʼs 4th symphony, the second violins (the top voice) move from F (pitch class 5) to pitch class 3.5 and resolve down to pitch class “3.” 1 This paper was also presented at CMS Southern Chapter Conference, Tampa, FL. Duffin ABSTRACT: Just intonation has a reputation as a chimerical, theoretical system that simply cannot work in practice. This is based on the assessment of most modern authorities and supported by misgivings expressed during the Renaissance when the practice was supposedly at its height. Looming large among such misgivings are tuning puzzles printed by the 16th-century mathematician, Giovanni Battista Benedetti. However, Renaissance music theorists are so unanimous in advocating the simple acoustical ratios of Just intonation that it seems clear that some reconciliation must have occurred between the theory and practice of it. This article explores the basic theory of Just intonation as well as problematic passages used to deny its practicability, and proposes solutions that attempt to satisfy both the theory and the ear. Ultimately, a resource is offered to help modern performers approach this valuable art. INTRODUCTION In the vast majority of musical cultures, collections of discrete pitch relation- shipsmmusical scales--are used as a framework for composition and improvisa- tion. In this chapter, the possible origins and bases of scales are discussed, includ- ing those aspects of scales that may be universal across musical cultures. The perception of the basic unit of melodies and scales, the musical interval, is also addressed. The topic of tuningmthe exact relationships of the frequencies of the tones composing the intervals and/or scales~is inherent in both discussions. In addition, musical interval perception is examined as to its compliance with some general "laws" of perception and in light of its relationship to the second most important aspect of auditory perception, speech perception. !!. WHY ARE SCALES NECESSARY? The two right-most columns of Table I give the frequency ratios, and their val- ues in the logarithmic "cent" metric, for the musical intervals that are contained in the scale that constitutes the standard tonal material on which virtually all Western music is based: the 12-tone chromatic scale of equal temperament. A number of assumptions are inherent in the structure of this scale. The first is that of octave equivalence, or pitch class. The scale is defined only over a region of one octave; tones separated by an octave are assumed to be in some respects musically equiva- lent and are given the same letter notation (Table I, column 3). The second is that pitch is scaled as a logarithmic function of frequency.
