Her PhD thesis, which focuses on representations of religious conver- sion in early modern English drama, will be completed in the course of 2012. She has published essays on the work of Shakespeare and Massinger; an article on the Nachleben of St. Augustine’s conversion is due to appear in 2012. Harald Hendrix, PhD (1993) in Italian Studies, University of Amsterdam, is full professor and chair of Italian Studies and head of the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Utrecht. He has published widely on the European reception of Italian Renais- sance and Baroque culture, on the early modern aesthetics of the non-beautiful as well as on literary culture and memory. Amongst his recent publications is the edited volume Writers’ Houses and the Making of Memory (2007). Todd M. Richardson, PhD (2007) in Art History, University of Leiden, is Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Mem- phis. He is the author of Pieter Bruegel the Elder: Art Discourse in the Sixteenth-Century Netherlands (2011) and the co-editor of two vol- umes: The Transformation of Vernacular Expression in Early Modern Art (2011) and Image and Imagination of the Religious Self in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe (2008). NOTES ON THE CONTRIBUTORS Mathilde Bernard obtained her PhD in French Literature from the University of Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris. She is the author of Écrire la peur au temps des guerres de Religion. Une étude des historiens et mémorialistes contemporains des guerres de Religion en France (1562– 1598) (Paris: 2010), and has published several articles on religion in early modern France. John R. Decker is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia and is a specialist in fifteenth- century Dutch religious painting. He has published on fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Dutch art with a focus on lay piety, devotional the- ory and practice, and the fashioning of social and religious identities. His monograph, The Technology of Salvation and the Art of Geertgen tot Sint Jans (Ashgate: 2009), explores the role of image in the complex system of Christian salvation in the early modern period. Xander van Eck is Associate Professor of Art History at Izmir Uni- versity of Economics. His research focuses on the patronage of the Catholic Church in the Netherlands in the early modern period. His publications include The Stained-glass Windows in the Sint Janskerk at Gouda: The works of Dirck and Wouter Crabeth, Corpus Vitrearum The Netherlands, vol. II (Amsterdam: 2002) andClandestine Splen- dor. Paintings for the Protestant Church in the Dutch Republic (Zwolle: 2008). Shulamit Furstenberg-Levi is affiliated to the Scuola Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence, Italy. She has published several articles on Renais- sance Humanism and Italian Jewish History. She is currently prepar- ing a book on the Accademia Pontaniana as a model of a humanist network. Lise Gosseye works at the Department of Literary Studies at Ghent University. Her research interests include Dutch literature, early mod- ern literature and literary theory. Her dissertation, entitled Reading x notes on the contributors towards the Light. Constantijn Huygens’ Ooghentroost at the Begin- nings of Modernity, explores the intertextual position of Ooghentroost as it relates to Hans Blumenberg’s conception of modernity. Chloë Houston is lecturer in Early Modern Drama in the Depart- ment of English and American Literature at the University of Reading. She is interested in early modern literature and history, and especially utopias and travel writing. She is the editor of New Worlds Reflected: Travel and Utopia in the Early Modern Period (Ashgate: 2010), and her new project is a book on Persia and Islam in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English literature. Philip Major is lecturer in Early Modern English Literature at the University of Ghent. He has published widely on seventeenth-century literature,

It incorporates comparable data from the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I, and the Elizabeth I. Much of the analysis is quantitative in nature: chapters compare the appointments of justices of the peace during the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, and reveal that purges of the commissions of the peace were far more common than is generally believed. Furthermore, purges appear to have been religiously- based, especially during the reign of Elizabeth I. There is a gap in the quantitative data beginning in 1569, only eleven years into Elizabeth I’s reign, which continues until 1584. In an effort to compensate for the loss of quantitative data, this dissertation analyzes a different primary source, William Lambarde’s guidebook for JPs, Eirenarcha. The fourth chapter makes particular use of Eirenarcha, exploring required duties both in and out of session, what technical and personal qualities were expected of JPs, and how well they lived up to them.

SCHAPIRO Psychoanalysis and the Problem of Evil: Debating Othello in the Classroom Since “evil” has become a term much in vogue in our current political climate, it seems ever more important to explore its psychic meanings and origins. What, first of all, do analysts and therapists mean by the word “evil”? The grandios- ity of the term, as well as its traditionally religious connota- tions, perhaps make it unsuited to the therapeutic context. As Ruth Stein (2002) has commented, “’Evil’ may sound too allegorical or too concrete, too essentialist or too objective for psychoanalytic ways of thinking that are oriented towards the study of individual subjectivity” (394). In an article entitled “Evil in the Mind of the Therapist” (2001), Robert Winer surveyed a number of practitioners and found a general consensus that “an evil person is someone who knowingly deeply hurts innocent people” (613). The emphasis here, he says, is on the “knowingly”—conscious deliberateness is key— as it is on the extremity of the hurt inflicted: “negating the other person’s soul, . destruction as an end in itself” (613). Winer discusses how his own psychological engagement with a patient works against his ever seeing that patient as evil, “no matter how outrageous his crimes” (614). The social psycholo- gist Roy Baumeister (1997) has observed that even serial killers never see themselves as evil but “regard themselves as victims” (47). Winer suggests that it is easier to experience characters in books and movies as evil because we know them only through their evil actions.

    Joseph M. Gonzalez 6 Fashioning Death: Clothing, Memory and Identity in 16th Century Swedish Funerary Practice Introduction King Gustav Vasa was married three times. In 1531, less than a decade after his election as King of Sweden, he made a match calculated to boost his prestige and help consolidate his position as king and married Katarina von Sax-Lauenburg, the daughter of Duke Magnus and a relative of the emperor. She bore the king one son, Erik, and died suddenly in 1535 (Svalenius, 1992). After her death, the king married the daughter of one of the most powerful noble houses in Sweden, Margareta Eriksdotter Leijonhufvud in 1536. Queen Margareta bore the king eight children before she died in 1551. By August of 1552, the fifty-six year old Gustav Vasa had found a new queen, the 16-year-old Katarina Gustavsdotter Stenbock, daughter of another of Sweden’s leading noble houses. Despite the youth of his bride, the marriage bore no children and the old king died eight years later (Svalenius, 1992). The king’s death occasioned a funeral of unprecedented magnificence that was unique both in its scale and in its promotion of the Vasa dynasty’s image and interests. Unique to Vasa’s funeral was the literal incorporation of the bodies of his two deceased wives in the ceremony. They shared his bed-like hearse on the long road to Uppsala and the single copper casket that was interred in the cathedral crypt. Six months after the funeral, Gustav Vasa’s son with Katarina von Sax-Lauenburg, Erik, was crowned king.

    INTRODUCTION. THIS present volume, though bearing upon it the names of two bishops of English dioceses, Exeter and London, is rather secular than ecclesiastical in its character. As connected with the history of our Church and country it belongs to the first decade of the fourteenth century, 1300-1310, but it tells us little of what those prelates thought or did ; it is the account rendered by the executors of their wills of the wealth which they possessed, the sources from which it was derived, and the disposition which they made of it when they died. The two bishops are Thomas de Button, Bishop of Exeter, and Kichard de Gravesend, Bishop of London. How far they were contemporary in age does not appear. The Bishop of London was the senior Bishop, having been consecrated in 1280, the Bishop of Exeter in 1292. The Bishop of London held his see twenty-three years, dying in December, 1303. The Bishop of Exeter held his see only fifteen years, dying in 1307. The executors' account of Bishop Button had been already printed when the Council of the Camden Society consented to add to it the account of the executors of Bishop Gravesend, which otherwise would have occupied the first place in the volume. What is known of these bishops may be comprised in the fol- lowing brief memoirs:— The late Dean Milman, in his Annals of St. Paul's, has sketched the history of the time in which Richard de Gravesend lived, and drawn from his will, and the proceedings of his executors, some account of his character.

For some readers, like myself, Lear is the “towering dead,” the sine qua non. If so, when writing about the play, why focus on anyone else? Are all the major figures but aspects of the King? One could argue that the Fool expresses Lear‟s subconscious or repressed rationality, but please do so gently. Other characters, like Lear‟s two evil daughters, give us insights into Lear‟s past behavior. And Gloucester certainly represents a mirror image of the King. There are only two foolish fathers in the story, and he is one of them.

Burke, Svante Norrhem, and Merry Wiesner-Hanks This series provides a forum for studies that investigate women, gender, and/ or sexuality in the late medieval and early modern world. The editors invite proposals for book-length studies of an interdisciplinary nature, including, but not exclusively, from the fields of history, literature, art and architectural history, and visual and material culture. Consideration will be given to both monographs and collections of essays. Chronologically, we welcome studies that look at the period between 1400 and 1700, with a focus on any part of the world, as well as comparative and global works. We invite proposals including, but not limited to, the following broad themes: methodologies, theories and meanings of gender; gender, power and political culture; monarchs, courts and power; constructions of femininity and masculinity; gift-giving, diplomacy and the politics of exchange; gender and the politics of early modern archives; gender and architectural spaces (courts, salons, household); consumption and material culture; objects and gendered power; women’s writing; gendered patronage and power; gendered activities, behaviours, rituals and fashions.
