Biographical History: The Armstrongs were a Scottish border clan, prominent in the service of both Scottish and English kings. Numerous and feared, the clan is said to have derived its name from a warrior who during the Battle of the Standard in 1138 lifted a fallen king onto his own horse with one arm after the king’s horse had been killed under him. In the turbulent years of the seventeenth century, many Armstrongs headed to Ireland to fight for the Royalist cause. Among them was Captain William Armstrong (c. 1630- 1695), whose father, Sir Thomas Armstrong, had been a supporter of Charles I throughout the Civil War and the Commonwealth rule, and had twice faced imprisonment in the Tower of London for his support for Charles II. When Charles II was restored to power, he favoured Captain William Armstrong with a lease of Farneybridge, county Tipperary, in 1660, and a grant of Bohercarron and other lands in county Limerick in 1666. In 1669, William was appointed Commissioner for Payroll Tax, and over the next ten years added to his holdings in the area, including the former lands of Holy Cross Abbey and the lands of Ballycahill.

The McGrath Family of Truxton, New York Michael F. McGraw 9108 Middlebie Drive Austin, TX 78750 [email protected] March 13, 2002 © Michael F. McGraw 2002 All rights reserved No part of this publication may be reproduced, stored in or introduced into a retrieval system, or transmitted, in any form or by any means (electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording or otherwise), without prior written permission of the copyright owner. 2 Cover: The picture on the front cover was taken from the rear of the main lodge of the Labrador Mountain Ski Lodge facing in a northeasterly direction. It was probably taken in the last few years. The lodge itself is located across the road from a small cemetery that is marked by a cross on the 1876 map of Truxton below. The road running north and south, passing by the front of the lodge and extending left and right through the center of the picture, is the North Road. Following this road, also known as Route 91, to the right leads into the village of Truxton about 2 miles south of this location. The significance of this location is that the McGraws and many of their friends and relatives lived in this immediate area. Michael McGraw’s farm on the North Road was located one mile south and across the road from his farm was the John Casey farm. The region out in the flat area over the silo to the left was where John McGraw, Michael’s brother, was living in 1883. His neighbor moving south was Patrick Comerford, brother of his wife Ellen Comerford McGraw.

He was the eldest child in the family of three girls and ten boys. In his youth, Ryan became involved in Land League activities. After training locally as a national school teacher, he went to London in 1886 with hopes of becoming a journalist. He first gained employment in the Pearl Assurance Company but pursued his journalistic ambitions by joining the Southwark Irish Literary Club. In 1891 he obtained a post with the short-lived Irish National Press in Liverpool, and published his first book, The Heart of Tipperary, the following year. In 1893 Ryan became private secretary to Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, who was at that time involved in the New Irish Library, whose aim was to publish Irish texts. This led to the publication of Ryan’s The Irish Literary Revival in 1894. During the following years Ryan wrote for publications such as the New Ireland Review, The Leader, Outlook, and occupied posts as sub-editor of T.P. O’Connor’s Evening Sun and as literary editor of the Sunday Special.
