  • Transatlantic: the Flying Boats of Foynes
Transatlantic: The Flying Boats of Foynes A Documentary by Michael Hanley Transatlantic: The Flying Boats of Foynes Introduction: She'd come down into the water the very same as a razor blade... barely touch it ‐ you'd hardly see the impression it would make. That was usual, but other times they might hit it very hard... ah yes, they were great days, there's no doubt about it. Poem: I'm sure you still remember the famous flying boats, B.O.A.C., P.A.A. and American Export. With crews - some were small, some tall, some dressed in blue, And in a shade of silvery grey, Export hostess and crew. Narrator: The town of Foynes is situated 15 miles west of Limerick city at the mouth of the River Shannon. Today it is a quietly prosperous port that at first glimpse belies its significance in the history of aviation. 60 years ago the flying boats, the first large commercial aeroplanes ploughed their heavy paths through the rough weather of the transatlantic run to set their passengers down here, on the doorstep of Europe, gateway to a new world. In a time of economic depression and growing international conflict, Foynes welcomed the world in the embrace of the Shannon estuary. "It can't be done!" That was most people's reaction to the idea of flying the Atlantic. After the First War, aircraft could just not perform to the levels needed to traverse the most treacherous ocean in the world. But the glory and the economic rewards for those who succeeded were huge.

  • The Armstrong Papers P6-Part1
The Armstrong Papers P6 Part I Armstrong of Moyaliffe Castle, County Tipperary University of Limerick Library and Information Services University of Limerick Special Collections The Armstrong Papers Reference Code: IE 2135 P6 Title: The Armstrong Papers Dates of Creation: 1662-1999 Level of Description: Sub-Fonds Extent and Medium: 133 boxes, 2 outsize items (2554 files) CONTEXT Name of Creator(s): The Armstrong family of Moyaliffe Castle, county Tipperary, and the related families of Maude of Lenaghan, county Fermanagh; Everard of Ratcliffe Hall, Leicestershire; Kemmis of Ballinacor, county Wicklow; Russell of Broadmead Manor, Kent; and others. Biographical History: The Armstrongs were a Scottish border clan, prominent in the service of both Scottish and English kings. Numerous and feared, the clan is said to have derived its name from a warrior who during the Battle of the Standard in 1138 lifted a fallen king onto his own horse with one arm after the king’s horse had been killed under him. In the turbulent years of the seventeenth century, many Armstrongs headed to Ireland to fight for the Royalist cause. Among them was Captain William Armstrong (c. 1630- 1695), whose father, Sir Thomas Armstrong, had been a supporter of Charles I throughout the Civil War and the Commonwealth rule, and had twice faced imprisonment in the Tower of London for his support for Charles II. When Charles II was restored to power, he favoured Captain William Armstrong with a lease of Farneybridge, county Tipperary, in 1660, and a grant of Bohercarron and other lands in county Limerick in 1666. In 1669, William was appointed Commissioner for Payroll Tax, and over the next ten years added to his holdings in the area, including the former lands of Holy Cross Abbey and the lands of Ballycahill.

  • Carrownagowan Wind Farm Dear Homeowner
Carrownagowan Wind Farm Dear Homeowner, First and foremost, we hope this finds you safe and well in these challenging times, and adjusting as best possible to new ways of going about daily life. As you may be aware, Coillte’s Renewable Energy business has been actively exploring a wind farm development opportunity in the Slieve Bearnagh area since early 2018. The community engagement model which we use within our team has given us an opportunity to meet with a very high proportion of people residing within 2 km of the potential wind farm. The proposed Carrownagowan Wind Farm project is nearing the end of its pre-planning phase and should shortly enter the planning process. Under normal circumstances, we would be holding a public information event now in order to present the enclosed information to the wider public in the area surrounding this project. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and associated restrictions mean that this is not now possible. As an alternative, we are now distributing the attached information very widely. It sets out a detailed overview of all aspects of the proposed Carrownagowan Wind Farm project. We acknowledge that this is by no means ideal, but please be assured that we will continue to make every effort to ensure that we provide you with all the information you need in order to fully understand the details of this proposed project and also make available the necessary resources within our team to support any engagement. Once you have had a chance to read through this brochure, please do make contact with any of the team using the contact details at the back if you have any areas of the project you wish to discuss further.
