At the blessing of the Bicentenary Cross at St. Patrick's College, Carlow, October 1, 1993 were, Father Brendan Byrne, P.P., Tullow; Mons. John McDonald, President St. Patrick's College; Cardinal Cahal Daly, who performed the blessing; Dr. Laurence Ryan, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin and Father Matt Kelly, P.P. Kildare. See page 2. Photo: Karl McDonough Dedication of Carlow College Bicentenary Cross HE monument chosen to mark the bicentenary of Car low College is an exact replica of the plain uninscribed high cross at Sleaty. Sleaty is beside the road from Car T low to Knockbeg and was the site of a monastery founded by St. Fiacc in the late fifth century. · Fiacc was born around 437. He was a catechumen and widower with one son, Fiachra, when q.e was chosen by St. Patrick as Bishop of Leinster. He founded his first monastery at Domnach-Fiacc which was probably situated between Clonmore and Aghowle in the parish of Clonmore. It is said that an angel appeared to him and notified him that his place of resurrection would ,be west of the river Barrow. St. Patrick marked out the site of Fiacc's monastery and church at Sleibhte on the ancestoral lands of Fiacc's family. In this place Fiacc lived a life of great austerity and died around 510. In the Liber Hymnorum in Trinity College there is a poem on the life of St. Patrick attributed to St. Fiacc. The cross at Sleaty is very early. Bishop Michael Comerford, the 19th century historian of the diocese, believed it was from the time ofFiacc. St. Mary's College at Knockbeg lies in the Termon of Sleaty. The idea of modelling the Bicentenary Cross on that of Sleaty was to focus attention on the continuity of the Christian tradition in the Carlow area over fifteen centuries, from the time of Fiacc the Fair to the present time. It was very fitting that this memorial of the bicentenary of Carlow College, St. Patrick's and St. Mary's was dedicated by the successor of St. Patrick, His Eminence Cardinal Cahal Daly, on Friday, October 1, 1993. Blessing The following is the blessing imparted by Cardinal Daly: Go mbeannaithear duit a Chrois A bhuinneain ghleigil uir Go mbeannaithear duit a chrainn ar ar ceasadh Criost Go mbeannaithear duit a ri .do sineadh ar an gcrois, impi cuirim chugat A blessing on this cross earnest of our praise A blessing on this cross mark of a Christian place A blessing from this cross On all who study here A blessing on all who look upon this cross and remember A blessing from this cross in the name of our saints Fiacc the Fair of Sleaty Lasarian of Leighlin Comhgan of Killeshin The Ceili De of Diseart Diarmada A blessing on this cross and on the craftsmen who fashioned it A blessing on us gathered here in jubilee. 0 Rock! fresh hewn for them, for us Memorial! • The Castlecomer Plateau
23 The Castlecomer plateau By T. P. Lyng, N.T. HE Castlecomer Plateau is the tableland that is the watershed between the rivers Nore and Barrow. Owing T to the erosion of carboniferous deposits by the Nore and Barrow the Castlecomer highland coincides with the Castle comer or Leinster Coalfield. Down through the ages this highland has been variously known as Gower Laighean (Gabhair Laighean), Slieve Margy (Sliabh mBairrche), Slieve Comer (Sliabh Crumair). Most of it was included within the ancient cantred of Odogh (Ui Duach) later called Ui Broanain. The Normans attempted to convert this cantred into a barony called Bargy from the old tribal name Ui Bairrche. It was, however, difficult territory and the Barony of Bargy never became a reality. The English labelled it the Barony of Odogh but this highland territory continued to be march lands. Such lands were officially termed “ Fasach ” at the close of the 15th century and so the greater part of the Castle comer Plateau became known as the Barony of Fassadinan i.e. Fasach Deighnin, which is translated the “ wi lderness of the river Dinan ” but which officially meant “ the march land of the Dinan.” This no-man’s land that surrounds and hedges in the basin of the Dinan has always been a boundary land. To-day it is the boundary land between counties Kil kenny, Carlow and Laois and between the dioceses of Ossory, Kildare and Leighlin. The Plateau is divided in half by the Dinan-Deen river which flows South-West from Wolfhill to Ardaloo. The rim of the Plateau is a chain of hills averag ing 1,000 ft.

The Armstrong Papers P6 Part I Armstrong of Moyaliffe Castle, County Tipperary University of Limerick Library and Information Services University of Limerick Special Collections The Armstrong Papers Reference Code: IE 2135 P6 Title: The Armstrong Papers Dates of Creation: 1662-1999 Level of Description: Sub-Fonds Extent and Medium: 133 boxes, 2 outsize items (2554 files) CONTEXT Name of Creator(s): The Armstrong family of Moyaliffe Castle, county Tipperary, and the related families of Maude of Lenaghan, county Fermanagh; Everard of Ratcliffe Hall, Leicestershire; Kemmis of Ballinacor, county Wicklow; Russell of Broadmead Manor, Kent; and others. Biographical History: The Armstrongs were a Scottish border clan, prominent in the service of both Scottish and English kings. Numerous and feared, the clan is said to have derived its name from a warrior who during the Battle of the Standard in 1138 lifted a fallen king onto his own horse with one arm after the king’s horse had been killed under him. In the turbulent years of the seventeenth century, many Armstrongs headed to Ireland to fight for the Royalist cause. Among them was Captain William Armstrong (c. 1630- 1695), whose father, Sir Thomas Armstrong, had been a supporter of Charles I throughout the Civil War and the Commonwealth rule, and had twice faced imprisonment in the Tower of London for his support for Charles II. When Charles II was restored to power, he favoured Captain William Armstrong with a lease of Farneybridge, county Tipperary, in 1660, and a grant of Bohercarron and other lands in county Limerick in 1666. In 1669, William was appointed Commissioner for Payroll Tax, and over the next ten years added to his holdings in the area, including the former lands of Holy Cross Abbey and the lands of Ballycahill.
