Two articles deal with John Gowan, an early Vincentian, who, readers will remember, founded the Sisters of the Holy Faith with Margaret Aylward. James Murphy’s article on nineteenth century Ireland sets such endeavours and attitudes in their broader historical context. The current edition also contains a reflection on priesthood by Kevin Scallon; written in the light of the silver jubilee of his ministry to priests, in which he works so closely with Sr Briege McKenna. The report of the Vincentian Refugee Centre in Phibsboro marks the com- pletion of two years of this work and the centre is now well into its third year. Bill Clarke’s article is a response to the recent visit to the province by the Superior General and it is worth noting that, in line with Bill’s thinking, a co-ordinator for youth ministry, Michael McCullagh, has recently been appointed. For the first time, we are including some other literary forms and I am grateful to Eamonn Flanagan for permission to print some of his poems. Sadly, the recent experience of the province has also included six deaths, some very sudden but all of them a loss. The deaths of Gearoid O'Sullivan and Tommy Fagan have been so recent that their obituaries will appear in the next edition. 76 “Taking the Heat” Priesthood – Gripes and Hopes Kevin Scallon CM We must begin by purifying ourselves before purifying others; we must be instructed to be able to instruct, become light to illuminate, draw close to God to bring him close to others, be sanctified to sanctify, lead by the hand and counsel prudently… Who then is the priest? He is the defender of truth who stands with angels, gives glory with archangels, causes sacrifices to rise to the altar on high, shares Christ’s priesthood, refashions creation and restores it in God’s image... St Gregory Nazianzus I recently heard of a young man who left the priesthood because of all the negative publicity priests were receiving in the media. I thought it very sad. Not so much as a bloody nose for Christ’s sake, no arrows through the chest, no bullet through the heart, no Miguel pro-like shout of Viva Cristo Rei. Just a whimper and slouch away. But maybe therein lies the problem. In penal days persecution seemed like a glorious vocation. Perhaps if our young friend was being hunted through the mountains of Kerry or Wicklow or Donegal or through the Glens of Antrim in danger of his life; finding shelter and a place to say Mass wherever he could, things might have turned out dif- ferently. Though I suspect that even in Penal days there was nothing especially glorious about any of it. Persecution and martyrdom tend always to be somewhat uncomfortable. Then,”they” were doing it to us. Now, it is “our own’ who are doing it. And, of course, our own have their special methods, namely, trivializing cynicism and mockery. In any event, we are living in critical times and we priests need to take a long, hard look at ourselves. Clearly we are not making the impact we used to. We seem to have lost our nerve, we have been struck dumb, cowed into silence, half-afraid to stand up for the gospel and the church. People now see this about us; to say nothing of the darker aspects of the lives of a few. They see it and they are disappointed and confused by our timidity. They think that far too many priests have taken the easy path in just walking away from the priesthood, instead of toughing it out as they themselves so often have to do. It is not as if we did not know what to expect when we answered the call. No one ever said, least of all 77 78 Kevin Scallon the Lord, that following Him in this ministry was going to be easy. (cf Mt.10:16-25; Lk. 14:25-33) I have always been struck by this passage from Sirach; more and more so with the passage of time. My son, if you come forward to serve the Lord, prepare yourself, for temptation. Set your heart right and be stead- fast, and do not be hasty in time of calamity. Cleave to Him and do not depart, that you may be honoured at the end of your life. Accept whatever is brought upon you and in changes that humble you, be patient, for gold is tested in the fire and acceptable men in the furnace of humilia- tion. Trust in him and he will help you make your ways straight and hope in him.(Sir. 2:1-6) The Church in Ireland today A prominent Catholic journalist recently told me how furious he gets when he meets priests who seem totally ambivalent about their priest- hood and who say things like “I wouldn’t advise any young man to become a priest nowadays.” One priest recently complained to me that the two priests he lives with have become so negative and cynical and demoralized that they hardly ever go out. All they ever seem to do is sit around watching television all day. Fr Francis Martin said at the Intercession for Priests this year that in all his years of travel, he has never come across anything like the anti-church, anti-clerical bias of the media in Ireland. It looks to me as if this is being orchestrated by people out to destroy the influence of the church; but maybe I am just being paranoid. They seem to want to transform our culture and religious values from Catholic/Christian to humanist/atheist. One way or another they have met with some success. In the area of certain aspects of morality, Ireland now has some of the most liberal legislation in Europe. None of our elected representatives have been willing to stand up for our traditional values when these matters came to be debated in Dáil Eireann. There is virtually no oppo- sition to anything the government wants to do and all appear to be singing from the same secular-humanist hymn-sheet. Similarly with the news media; few of them, even the local newspapers, ever defend our religious culture and traditions. Rather, they mock religious values and people every chance they get. There is no centre or balance anymore. So there is a war going on over the soul of Ireland, and at the moment the church is not winning. One thing the church has to do (and this must begin with us priests) is to stand up and speak out against hypocrisy and lies and against unjust attacks on clergy, religious, and church institu- tions and teaching in general. I know that we have had our scandals but TAKING THE HEAT 79 these events, unfortunate as they are, should not prevent us from standing up for truth and justice. Recently, a priest told me how he was attacked by a man in a hotel down the country. The man said sarcasti- cally “And who have you abused today, Your Reverence?” The priest went over to him and said very calmly; “Look sir, you don’t know me and I don’t know you. But, for your information, I have never abused anyone in my life: which is more than can be said for you. You have just abused me publicly in the presence of my family and my friends and if you had any decency you would apologise.” Of course, he did not. The message we carry We are all aware that in the past the church has tended to speak out rather too much and often in angry, authoritarian and unloving ways. Nevertheless, we have to speak the truth in love and not a feigned love either but with the sincere love of Christ. There has been enough finger- wagging from the pulpit. People say it is time for the church to be humble and to remain silent. Well, maybe. It is certainly time for me to humble myself and repent of my sins, but as the Pope would and did remind us, there is a difference between the people who act in the name of the Church and the Church as the body of Christ. It may not be possible for me as a priest to defend my every action, but I must always defend the church. Recently, I spoke to a woman in public life who asked me why the clergy seem so reluctant to speak up on so many important issues. I said I thought it was because we are afraid. She looked at me and said “But you have the greatest message of all and as priests you should not be afraid; you should be willing to take the heat. I have to take it practically every day.” I really think that we priests need to come sincerely before the Lord and call ourselves to a deep, healing repentance.

Across the Presentation world we are well aware of the profound and professional contribution which Sr. Pius has made in making Nano and her vision known. In the 1980’s and 1990’s Sr. Pius worked tirelessly to write the Positio for the Congregation so that Nano’s Cause can be furthered. She has written two wonderful books on Nano, Breaking of Morn and Nano Nagle Woman of the Gospel. They are inspirational and informative. Many of us look to her writings to deepen our own understanding of Nano and her vision. She also produced CD’s, so that those who have special needs can dip into the spirit of this valiant woman. She has walked with many of us on the ‘Nano Walk’ in Cork. To quote her own words from “Nano Nagle, Woman of the Gospel” ‘To the people of Cork she gave not just a piece of silk but her whole life. Their needs were so great that she was drawn into ever greater service, into ever deeper poverty, into continual demands of her time. In school and street, she gave what she had. To her, everyone in need was Christ asking for help…It was all ‘of the Sacred Heart.’ Love and compassion outran every plan she made and every effort at conservation of resources.’ Sr. Pius’s contribution is invaluable and will stand the test of time, it is a treasure house that we draw on each day.

    The Recruitment and Identity of Irish Women Religious, c. 1840-1940 ‘Je suis d’aucune Nation’: The Recruitment and Identity of Irish Women Religious in the International Mission Field, c. 1840-1940 Deirdre Raftery University College Dublin [email protected] Abstract This article examines the lives of Irish-born women religious around the world, in the period 1840-1940. Ireland sent thousands of nuns overseas as teachers and missionaries, to work in schools, orphanages, and hospitals in Sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia, the Americas, Australia, and Europe. Looking at contemporaneous views of missionary work, recruitment to religious life, and the social conditions for Irish women during and after the years of the Great Famine, the article determines some of the attraction of religious life for Irish women, and the expression of their Irish identity to be found in convents internationally.1 The article concludes with comments on the bifurcated identity of Irish women religious who, though first and foremost members of particular religious orders, were often identified by others as “Irish Nuns.” 1 Research for this article has received support for which this author is grateful.     From the Acorn to the Oak Celebrating the Brigidine Story Rita Minehan csb 1 Introduction I was invited to share the Brigidine Story “From the Acorn to the Oak” with the Brigidine Sisters in the Irish-UK Province in July 2006, in preparation for the Brigidine Bicentenary in 2007. This was the beginning of “a world tour” with the story. I’ve been privileged to share it with the Sisters and Associates in the US Region, and the Sisters and their co- workers in the Victorian and New South Wales Provinces in Australia. A shorter version of the story has been shared in parishes in Tullow, Mountrath, Abbeyleix, Paulstown, Kildare, Ballyboden, Finglas, Denbigh and Slough. The story was slightly adapted to include a little local history in each location. The story has been shared with teachers and students in Denbigh, Wales; in Indooroopilly, Queensland; in St Ives, NSW; in Killester and Mentone, Victoria. A great number of people around the world have been drawn into the Brigidine Story over the past two hundred years. Sharing the story during the bicentenary year was a very meaningful and enriching experience.     Chapter 1 The Laws in Ireland, 1689-1850: A Brief Introduction1 Michael Brown and Sean Patrick Donlan Essentially, the tale was trivial. A scoundrel named Siobharan stole a cockerel, which had been bought at a fair by Father Aengus. A local court quickly denounced the theft and a warrant for his arrest was promptly issued. It was a local drama, a conflict within a community that was replicated across the countryside and across rural societies everywhere. But the poet and scribe Aogan 6 Rathaille (1675-1729) found something emblematic, drawing from its mundane universality a tense political specificity that twisted me tale away from the ordinary and placed it into the mythic world of the symbolic. The poem he composed, 'Ar Choileach a Goideadh 6 Shagart Maith' (A Good Priest's Stolen Cock) metamorphosed the event from the banalities oflocal spite into a profound parable of cultural, religious and political conflict. Blending the English and the Irish language, the opening stanza revealed 6 Rathaille's intent. They had originally settled at Faithlegg where “the first Aylward who came to this country accompanied King Henry II, receiving from him, by Charter 1172, the lands of Faithleg and other estates…”2 Peter Aylward, who died in 1594, served as Mayor of the City [1566-67] and his son Richard, 1540-1626, held the post in 1592, 1605-07 and 1616-1617. William, Margaret’s father, was a “merchant prince of the city of Waterford” who made a fortune in the Newfoundland trade. The family was also well known and even wealthier at this time on the female side. Ellen Murphy was previously married and had one son, Maurice Mullowney, by that union. She brought to her second marriage considerable property and her unmarried sisters, Mary and Margaret Murphy, sold to “their brother-in-law ‘all the property he possessed in King Street, Waterford and in Thomas Street and other places.’”3 Mrs Aylward’s brother, Patrick Joseph Murphy was a central figure in the establishment of the Christian Brothers. He entered the Order at 22 and by 1831 returned to Waterford as Director or Superior of the Community in Mount Sion where he served in the position until 1851. “There is nothing recorded of Mrs Aylward, except that she lived to the age of seventy-none, having out-lived her husband by nearly twenty years.”4 Margaret was the fifth child in a family of ten.

ABSTRACT William Bernard Ullathorne was Vicar General of New South Wales from 1832 to 1841. While Catholics had arrived in the First Fleet in 1788, it was not until the 1830s that the church's ministerial structure was put on a permanent footing. In order to place the decade of the 1830s in context, I have outlined the early history of Catholicism in Australia and examined why Fathers Therry and Conolly failed to put down permanent roots. The thesis then goes on to argue that Ullathorne was the key person in establishing permanent ecclesiastical structures. The Catholic Church had begun in Australia in 1820 as an official convict chaplaincy. Church-state relationships were of fundamental importance. It was Ullathorne who negotiated a working relationship with the colonial government of New South Wales. The thesis argues that his success in Australia was based on his own clerical professionalism. The professional clergyman was a newly emerging species in the 19th century.

The Society, which shall be non-sectarian and non- olitical, is formed : (a) To throw light upon the ancient monuments and memorials of the Diocese of Kilmore, and of the Counties of Cavan and Leitrim, and to foster an interest in their preservation ; (b) To study the social and domestic life of the periods to which these memorials belong. (c) To collect, preserve and diffuse information regarding the history, traditions and f olk-lore of the districts mentioned ; and, (d) To record and help to perpetuate the names and doings of distinguished individuals of past generations connected with the diocese or counties named. CONSTITUTION. The Society shall consist of Patrons, Members, and Life Members. The Patrons will be the Bishops- of Kilmore, if they are pleased to act. All interested in the objects of the Society may become members on payment of the entrance fee and the annual sub- scription. The entrance fee shall be Tejz Shillings. The annual sub- scription shall also be Tefi Shillings, payable on or before election, and on each subsequent 1st.
