AAC Publications Milford Sound, Airport Wall, Mile High Club New Zealand, Southern Alps In recent years I have been living between France and the USA, not really spending much time in my native New Zealand. My wife, Julie, is French, and our loose plan was to settle in France when our young son, Sam, started school. At the end of 2019, we had just finished a three-month road trip in California and headed back to NZ for Christmas—for what we intended to be a 10-week visit. But that was before COVID-19. In February, France began its first lockdown, and India, where I was meant to go in April to attempt Changabang, canceled all tourist visas. Since we were already in New Zealand, which at the time had no COVID- related restrictions, we took the easy option of staying there. A few months passed. New Zealand went through its own lockdown, which ended on May 13. We emerged with few restrictions, but we certainly weren’t leaving the country anytime soon. For two years, I had thought of Changabang daily, and for four months I’d been training cardio almost exclusively. Now I began looking for an outlet for all of the energy I had been saving for Changabang. There were no standout alpine objectives calling my name in New Zealand, but my friend Merry Schimanski, who was taking a year off work, was keen to help me develop a long rock route. Like me, he has a love of ground-up adventure climbing, and he is also well versed in establishing big granite lines. -

A MOUNT RAINIER CENTENNIAL In 1833, Dr. William Fraser Tolmie made a journey from Nisqually House to Mount Rainier. It was a notable undeltaking as the first near approach to the great peak. He kept a diary. Parts of that precious document have taken their places as prized publications among the works on the Pacific Northwest. An appro priate monument to the man and to his famous alpine excursion is found in Tolmie Peak in the northwestern comer of Rainier National Park. As the centennial of Doctor Tolmie's arrival in the Pacific Northwest approaches, many people are thinking of commemorat ing it. Two preliminary events are worth recording. Mr. C. B. Bagley furnishes the account of one of these, an informal celebra tion of the ninety-sixth anniversary of Doctor Tolmie's arrival in the Northwest. The other preliminary item is a letter proposing a centennial celebration in 1933. It was written to Mr. Horace M. Albright, Director of the National Park Service, Washington, D.C., by Asahel Curtis, of Seattle, chairman of the Rainier National Park Advisory Board. A copy of the letter was sent to The Mountaineers, Inc., and to certain northwestern newspapers. It will undoubtedly prove a sufficient impulse to produce the desired result. In that case, some picturesque chapters of local history will certainly be revived. To further the cause, the letter by Mr. Curtis is here published in full, following the account of the recent cele bration in Victoria.-EDIToR. Ninety-sixth Anniversary of Doctor Tolmie's Arrival On Saturday, May 4, 1929, at their residence in Victoria, the Misses Tolmie celebrated the 96th anniversary of their father's arrival at Fort Vancouver. -

The Mountaineer Climbing Code A climbing party of three is the minimum, unless adequate support is available who have knowledge that the climb is in progress. On crevassed glaciers, two rope teams are recommended. Carry at all times the clothing, food and equipment necessary. Rope up on all exposed places and for all glacier travel. Keep the party together, and obey the leader or majority rule. Never climb beyond your ability and knowledge. -

Schmitt, Chair Baddeleyite is a frequently found accessory mineral in silica-undersaturated lavas. Because it is typically enriched in uranium, while having low initial lead, baddeleyite has long been a prime target for U-Pb geochronology for mafic rocks. The difficulties in retrieving small baddeleyite grains from volcanic samples and the lack of a detailed understanding of baddeleyite occurrence, however, have limited baddeleyite chronology largely to coarse-grained mafic intrusive rocks. In this thesis, the development of U-Th in-situ baddeleyite analysis using Secondary Ionization Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) is presented together with an assessment of baddeleyite occurrence in Quaternary silica- undersaturated lavas. Samples studied include the Cathedral Crag and Burroughs Mountain lava flows of Cascade arc volcanoes Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier (Washington, USA), respectively, and Accademia, Punta Marmolite and Cuma lava domes of the Campi Flegrei caldera (Naples, Italy). Baddeleyite crystals were initially identified in cut and polished rock billets using scanning electron microscope (SEM) backscatter imaging and energy dispersive x-ray analysis, before they were separated by diamond-drilling for ii SIMS analysis. A total of 62 and 52 baddeleyite crystals were documented from Cathedral and Burroughs Mountain lava flows; 205, 42 and 15 baddeleyite crystals were documented from Accademia, Punta Marmolite and Cuma lava domes, respectively.
