STRATEGY, MISSION AND PEOPLE IN A RURAL DIOCESE A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF THE DIOCESE OF GLOUCESTER 1863-1923 BRIAN KNIGHT A thesis submitted to the University of Gloucestershire in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities August, 2002 11 Strategy, Mission and People in a Rural Diocese A critical examination of the Diocese of Gloucester 1863-1923 Abstract A study of the relationship between the people of Gloucestershire and the Church of England diocese of Gloucester under two bishops, Charles John Ellicott and Edgar Charles Sumner Gibson who presided over a mainly rural diocese, predominantly of small parishes with populations under 2,000. Drawing largely on reports and statistics from individual parishes, the study recalls an era in which the class structure was a dominant factor. The framework of the diocese, with its small villages, many of them presided over by a squire, helped to perpetuate a quasi-feudal system which made sharp distinctions between leaders and led. It is shown how for most of this period Church leaders deliberately chose to ally themselves with the power and influence of the wealthy and cultured levels of society and ostensibly to further their interests. The consequence was that they failed to understand and alienated a large proportion of the lower orders, who were effectively excluded from any involvement in the Church's affairs. Both bishops over-estimated the influence of the Church on the general population but with the twentieth century came the realisation that the working man and women of all classes had qualities which could be adapted to the Church's service and a wider lay involvement was strongly encouraged. -

The Great East Window
The Great East Window: Analysis and Hypothesis by Julie Adams Julie Adams is a Cathedral Guide who trained in the winter of 2001/2002 and in 2003 joined a group of guides who, under Mary Callé’s direction, researched the windows and trained each other on the stained glass of the Cathedral. Introduction Standing at the west end looking down the nave, the eye is normally led to the Great East Window, (Fig 1) which rises prominently above the high altar, and can be seen beyond the quire screen. In this article I shall be considering the content of the window before and after the restoration that was carried out by Edward Baillie in 1852. Much of the window content is clearly not original, but some is, and I will offer a hypothesis on what might have been there when it was first installed by Bishop Fox in c.1520. Fig 1 The Great East Window Photo: Roger Buchanan Content of the Window before and after the Restoration of 1852 The window is in three tiers, with seven lights (or glazed panels) in the bottom row, and three main lights in each of the middle and top rows. The lower two tiers are single figures set below architectural canopies in a similar style to the glazing of the nave and the clerestory. The top tier makes up a single composition of Christ flanked by The Blessed Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist. The style of the stonework is late perpendicular, similar to that of the Lady Chapel windows. 1 John Dolbel Le Couteur published his treatise “Ancient Stained Glass in Winchester” [1] in 1920, a comprehensive survey which has never been superseded. -

AFTERWORD Peacock-feathered wings For two glorious months, I thought I had made an impressive discovery, albeit not in relation to David Parr but his employer’s former associate, Charles Eamer Kempe, which was good enough for me. I was certain that I had found two sources which had inspired Kempe to give his angels peacock-feathered wings and incorporated them in my ‘January’ story. Then, a couple of days before Tamsin and I were due to meet, I discovered I had got it wrong. I should have been devastated but, oddly, my error was because of something that held great significance for the David Parr House. What happened? I had gone back to Adrian Barlow’s books on Kempe, which are to be admired for his diligent research, for his honest, warts and all, portrayal of Kempe in his 2018 biography, and, last but not least, his 2019 ‘Espying Heaven: The stained glass of Charles Eamer Kempe and his artists’ for containing an abundance of coloured illustrations. (I work with a stained-glass specialist who showed me reference books in her collection to prove that it’s rarely the case and how high Barlow had set the bar in terms of production values). Barlow’s 2019 publication is thematic, so I had turned to the chapter on ‘Angels’ to see if the author had discovered where Kempe had got the inspiration to give his angels peacock-feathered wings. The thread begins early in Kempe’s career, when he and Frederick Leach (David Parr’s employer) had an informal business association. -

Burke, Svante Norrhem, and Merry Wiesner-Hanks This series provides a forum for studies that investigate women, gender, and/ or sexuality in the late medieval and early modern world. The editors invite proposals for book-length studies of an interdisciplinary nature, including, but not exclusively, from the fields of history, literature, art and architectural history, and visual and material culture. Consideration will be given to both monographs and collections of essays. Chronologically, we welcome studies that look at the period between 1400 and 1700, with a focus on any part of the world, as well as comparative and global works. Abstract This analysis of the extant material evidence of the interiors of parish churches in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, 1560 -1640, challenges traditional assumptions about who decorated them, and what motivated them. Local studies show that what might appear as compliance to externally imposed requirements could also be a more complex story of parochial priorities and of local catalysts; some radical changes could appear traditional. Whilst donors’ religious and secular motives were often interwoven, this study will show that there was no clear alignment between confessional positions and decoration, and that Protestantism continued to embrace the visual in parish churches. It will be argued that the enhancing of churches predated the 1630s, and anything that could be called Laudian. -
