LATEST NEWS Businesses linked to McCaskill’s husband get $131 million in federal dollars BY KELSEY RYAN AND LINDSAY WISE [email protected] [email protected] July 24, 2018 04:00 AM WASHINGTON — Businesses tied to U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill’s husband have been awarded more than $131 million in federal subsidies since the Missouri Democrat took office in 2007, an analysis by The Kansas City Star found. Joseph Shepard’s personal income from his investments in those businesses has grown exponentially during his wife’s two terms in the Senate. The federal payments don’t go directly into Shepard’s pocket. Most of the money goes toward operating costs for government-subsidized housing projects Shepard is invested in. Those companies then distribute the profits to Shepard and other investors. In 2006, the year before McCaskill entered the Senate, her husband’s personal income from those investments was between $1,608 and $16,731, according to the senator’s financial disclosure forms. In 2017, five years into McCaskill’s second term, Shepard personally earned between $365,374 and $1,118,158 from investments in housing projects that received federal subsidies, the disclosure forms show. Disclosure forms only provide ranges of income. There’s no evidence that McCaskill played any part in directing federal funds to businesses affiliated with her husband. The senator does not sit on committees that oversee the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development or the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the agencies that award affordable housing contracts and loans to developers and pay out the subsidies. -

It was a one-page guide on Stone’s favorite line of attack against the Democratic nominee—how to savage Hillary Clinton for Bill Clinton’s history with other women. BC Fulton Hall of Fame
Dear Fultonians, The Fultonian for Summer 2019 was mailed on July 12, 2019 and contained a completely unexpected honor for me as I learned that I had been inducted into the Hall of Fame as a representative of the Golden Age of Fulton Debate. It came at a perfect time for me to immediately show it to my brother Kevin, who had entered BC in 1967 and co-chaired the Fulton High School Debate Tournament in 1968. It also came at a perfect time in the history of Boston College, since the Boston College Magazine had just announced that the archive of issues from 100 years of The Heights has been made available on the internet. So I was able to browse my life at BC and recall my time as a Fultonian. I realize that your march through the decades made me one of the first honorees with an opportunity to thank you for the honor. Accordingly, I feel the obligation to recount my journey to this honor with the help of pictures and the thousands of words they merit. I was in the vortex of the Golden Age, because it didn’t begin with me and it didn’t end with me. My entrance to the Fulton certainly did not presage such an honor, based on my high school record as a member of the Behrens Debate Society of Canisius High School. I certainly couldn’t have been described as a “former all-state debater from Illinois” as Charlie Lawson, CBA ’70 was in 1967. The only debate tournament I won in high school occurred on Nov. -

It focuses on the work of Canadian political scientist Thomas Homer-Dixon, whose model of environmental conflict achieved considerable prominence in U.S. foreign policy circles in the 1990s. The thesis argues that this success was due in part to widely shared neo-Malthusian assumptions about the Third World, and to the support of private foundations and policymakers with a strategic interest in promoting these views. It analyzes how population control became an important feature of American foreign policy and environmentalism in the post-World War Two period. It then describes the role of the "degradation narrative" — the belief that population pressures and poverty precipitate environmental degradation, migration, and violent conflict — in the development of the environment and security field. -

Welcome to the Institute of Politics at Harvard University Trey Grayson, Director The 2012 election cycle is in high gear, and the past six months have been fast- paced at the Institute. As you will note in this newsletter, the IOP has been at the forefront of election and campaign-related programming, with events, conferences and younger voter research unavailable anywhere else. One of my biggest goals since beginning service as the Institute’s Director has been to improve how the IOP utilizes technology – in an effort to maximize efficiency internally and best distribute and share our content externally to audiences inter- ested in politics and public service. Toward this end, we are very pleased this month to unveil the new online home for John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum programming at www.jfkjrforum.org (see feature on next page). The new microsite not only has a state-of-the art design but also can broadcast Forum programming in a format allowing Forum events to be streamed live or viewed later on any computer or device, including iPads and iPhones. We are also hard at work building a new IOP-wide website – scheduled to be completed next fall – which improves our current website layout and better integrates key online content from Institute students and student publications like the Harvard Political Review. -

Packaging Politics looks at how the rise of consumer culture over the past 60 years has influenced presidential campaigning and political culture more broadly. Drawing on interviews with political consultants, political reporters, marketing experts and communications scholars, Packaging Politics explores the formal and informal ways that commercial marketing methods – specifically emotional and open source branding and micro and behavioral targeting – have migrated to the political realm, and how they play out in campaigns, specifically in presidential races. Heading into the 2012 elections, how much truth is there to the notion that selling politicians is like “selling soap”? What is the difference today between citizens and consumers?
