All of our classrooms are full and our staff is recent special council held in Chicago. Admittedly, this is a little late in coming, but there was much to process prepared for another amazing summer with the children. Many of our (and still to be processed) during the four days we met in Chicago. But before I begin, let me first convey a few school-age children will attend the Arts Camp on the Hill program in June as well as receive general thoughts. swim testing, park trips, bowling, and roller skating. Our preschool-age children will First, as your Classis representative to the council, I am grateful for your prayers and support - before, during, experience bike and water days, library and park trips and a special visit to Play World and and after the special council. The power of prayer is not to be underestimated, and I and the other participants felt Culver’s Restaurants. Below you can check out the artistic talents of all of our Thirdly, as most (or perhaps all) of you are aware, while I attended the special council as our Classis center children from the Grand Rapids Art Museum event in late April. It was a fabulous night representative, Jen Petersen also attended as an at-large participant, invited by the Group of Five. Suffice to say, of creative expression, family networking and lots of smiles and laughter. The center also Jen and I were both profoundly affected by what took place at the special council, and are open to firsthand held its preschool and pre-k graduation night in May. This is an event that brings in many discussions. However, we felt that since the makeup of the special council was one representative from each Classis, along with thirty at-large participants, it would be most appropriate for me, as your appointed Classis families and extended family members to celebrate their little graduates. This year’s event representative, to share personal reflections. But again, please feel free to engage either one of us firsthand. featured the reciting of all of Psalm 23, all of the states in the United States and many other well-known Bible verses that the children worked all year on to perfect for the families. Okay, on to my reflections of the special council … This is your last chance to get on some great golf for a great cause! The 13th Annual Throughout the special council, the presence and work of the Holy Spirit was clear and compelling. Those who Orchard Hill Chip’in For Children Golf Event is scheduled for Saturday, June 4 beginning at came fixed on the far end of either side of the argument were gracious in listening to one another, and seeking to 9:00 AM at The Meadows Golf Couse on the campus of GVSU. Regardless, each of us were moved by the Holy Spirit and blessed to be among brothers and sisters who differed newsletter for donation and registration information. This year’s profit earned will be utilized in their beliefs and opinions. There was a healthy mixture of both grace and truth – genuine authenticity, as the to update and improve our center playground. We appreciate your support of our ministry!! church is supposed to function. However, as I took stock of what we were asked to do, I began to realize that our task, at least in my estimation, was impossible. To gather 74 individuals who are knowingly diverse in their beliefs and thinking, and tasking them to determine a “way forward” is, humanly speaking, just about impossible (though I understand and take heart knowing that all things are in fact possible with God). The council did the best job it could, yet our output to the General Synod is muddled at best. Did we provide a “way forward?” I suppose time will tell, but frankly I am not confident that we did. The special council was recommended as a sort of parallel to the Jerusalem council formed to deal with the lingering issues of the day around circumcision. And while the parallels are many, there is one very key aspect in the Jerusalem council that our polity does not allow for. In the Jerusalem council, after the “apostles and elders met to consider this question” (Acts 15:6), and after hearing from leaders, James made the final decision (Acts 15:13- 21). This is where the parallel between our special council and the Jerusalem council breaks down. Neither our General Secretary, nor the “Group of Five,” nor a specially appointed special council carries the authority that James did in Jerusalem. This is not an editorial, it’s simply our reality. In my estimation, the special council fulfilled what it was tasked to do. But given the enormity and improbability of the task at hand, there is, understandably, confusion and frustration on the part of many over what exactly the outcome of the special council was. The reality is that the special council as a whole, and the ten very diverse table groups that met throughout the special council, were not focused on advancing a single way forward, but on advancing multiple possible ways forward. Ultimately, the General Synod will need to process the output from the special council and determine its own recommended “way forward.” Seemingly, there is a high likelihood that each of our 44 Classes will vote on something (or on multiple proposals) in the coming year. Stay tuned! In the meantime, my hope and prayer is that while all of this is happening, our churches and leaders will remain united in Christ, rooted in faith, and committed to advancing the Gospel. Grace and peace, Mike Gaffa 4 Page11 11
