8:00 am --- 5:00 pm The ManagementManagement of Neonatal Resuscitation Karen Strange, CPM The Midwifery Management of Neonatal Resuscitation is a class that incorporates the basic NRP hospital course with information specifically designed and taught for homebirth and birth center settings. The course covers neonatal transitional physiology, physiologic cod closure, species-specific behavior at birth, the cocktail of hormones peaking and how all of this fits into the biological imperatives for both mother and baby at birth. Controversies and upcoming guideline changes in NRP will be discussed. Participants will need to purchase the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 4 th edition. Chapters 1-4 must be read prior to the class. $145

Newborn Consciousness: Simple Tools for & Karen Strange, CPM This class will expand what we know about support for babies in the prenatal period, during their journey through labor, birth, and the postpartum. We will cover how to do a “debrief and integration” when there has been a complication or an intervention at birth. Examples of “Rupture and Repair” will be given, a way out of the guilt that often accompanies this new awareness about babies being conscious.

EFT: Emotional Freedom Technique Eileen Sullivan, CBE, MCHD, EFT-EFT -ADV--ADV Participants will learn the theory behind EFT and how it works, as well as the "Basic Recipe" technique. Eileen will work with a volunteer or two on an issue of their choice, and everyone in the session will have the opportunity to experience EFT for themselves. Participants will also discuss some of the ways that EFT can benefit women and families in the childbearing year, as well as hard-working midwives and other birth professionals.

Legislative Roundtable Lisa Clark, Ida Darragh, CPM, LM, & Chloe Raum Come join us for a legislative roundtable discussion. We'd like to hear from midwives and consumers in licensed states concerning regulation. How did you pass your bill? What continuing efforts are going on in your state? What wisdom do you have for states still in the process of drafting and lobbying? We'd also like to hear from those in states still lobbying for a bill.

Birth Art: When a Picture is worth a Million Words Eileen Sullivan, CBE, MCHD, EFT-EFT -ADV--ADV Discusses process art and how it can be used in preparation for birth, as well as ways to help ourselves and others process a difficult birth experience with art. Participants will have an opportunity to make a piece of birth art and to explore its meanings, as well as to learn the art of gentle exploration of birth art made by others. Resources for supplies and further information about process art and birth art will be shared.

In this session, we will share, with intention, the experiences of our birthing. While listening and sharing, throw down your amnihook and pick up your crochet hook! Help craft baby hats to benefit Safehouse, a domestic violence shelter in Birmingham. For those who are not crafty, bring a new item of baby clothing to donate to Safehouse.

How to Keep your Relationship Sexually Healthy during Pregnancy,P regnancy, Breastfeeding and Parenthood Keith Abrams, PhD Participants in this session will review relevant research literature related to the impact of pregnancy, breastfeeding and early parenthood on one’s sexuality and sexual relationship.

How to Become a CPM Ida Darragh, CPM, LM This workshop explains the various paths to certification as a CPM and how the requirements must be documented for NARM. This is a good workshop for both apprentices and preceptors so that those who are involved in training an apprentice can better understand the information that should be documented during the apprenticeship. Also included is information on the development of the CPM certification, including the Skills Assessment and the NARM Written Examination.

Keith Abrams, PhD Dr. Abrams received his B.A. in psychology from Stanford University, earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from The Ohio State University and completed a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Program in Human Sexuality at the University of , the nation’s most comprehensive program for clinical research and services in sexual health. He specializes in providing therapy for clients with a wide range of relationship and sexuality issues.

Deren Bader, CPM, DrPH Deren has been attending home births since 1986. She currently lives and practices in Charlottesville, Virginia. She received her Doctor of Public Health degree in Maternal and Child Health in 2003. She currently serves on the Virginia Advisory Board on Midwifery, is Director of Research Education for MANA's Division of Research, and is the current Southeast Regional Representative for MANA.

Anne Bailey Anne is mother, businesswoman, poet, storyteller and artist.

Jana Borino, CPM Jana is a founding mother of the Florida School of Traditional Midwifery. She has dedicated her professional life to the advancement of midwifery in Florida and the nation. Jana has attended births as a midwife assistant since 1986 and has served on numerous boards and committees of national, state and local midwifery organizations. Her work continues to advance midwifery through her teaching, fundraising, grant writing and public speaking. Jana was very involved in legislative action during key political years that resulted in successful passage of Florida Statue 467, The Midwifery Practice Act. Her recent efforts have yielded over $300,000 in fundraising, a $500, 000 loan and a $150,000 Johnson & Johnson grant.

Lisa Clark Lisa is a mother of four and has been a educator and consumer advocate in Alabama for 10 years. She is co-founder of the Alabama Birth Coalition along with Chloe Raum.

Ida Darragh, CPM, LM Ida has been a licensed midwife in Arkansas since 1985, and a CPM since 1996. She joined the NARM Board in 1997 and became the Director of Testing in 1998 and the Chair of the Board in 2003. In her work with NARM, she has been involved with efforts to pass licensure legislation in many states.

Ina May Gaskin, CPM Ina May has been a midwife for more than thirty years at Midwifery Center at The Farm in Summertown, Tennessee. Of the 2,200 babies born at The Farm, 96% were delivered without medical assistance. Ina May is past president of the Midwives Alliance of North America. She lectures internationally, writes for national publications, and has been interviewed by a range of media on this topic.

Lisa Goldstein, BFA, LM, RN, CPM, CNM Lisa attended her first at the age of twelve. She learned midwifery from many sources -- apprenticing with granny midwives, nurse-midwives, an obstetrician and family practice physicians. Her three sons were all born at home providing her with the best teacher of all -- experience. She completed the CNEP program for nurse-midwifery, becoming a CNM in 1988. She has been making her own herbal and homeopathic medicines since the 1960's, and currently attends home and hospital births, as well as doing women's health care.

Russell S. Kirby, PhD, MS, FACE Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Maternal and Child Health, School of Public Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham Russ takes a highly multidisciplinary perspective on perinatal health, and has worked closely with midwives, doulas, and others who support women during their pregnancies, childbirth, and care for themselves and their newborns following delivery.

Carol Nelson, LM, CPM Carol works at The Farm Midwifery Center. She currently chairs MANA’s Midwifery Education and Advocacy Committee and is the treasurer of the NARM board.

Debbie Pulley, CPM Debbie is the director of Public Education and Advocacy for the North American Registry of Midwives. She also serves on the MANA/ACNM Liaison Committee. She has been a practicing midwife since 1982 and a CPM since 1995.

Chloe Raum Chloe is a mother of one, a childbirth educator, a consumer advocate, and an apprentice midwife. She is a co-founder of the Alabama Birth Coalition along with Lisa Clark.

Karen Strange, CPM Karen is a midwife and creator of “The Midwifery Management of Neonatal Resuscitation.” Karen speaks to the biological imperative for both mother and baby and offers this new awareness from the journey the baby makes and all that she is in taking during that journey.

Eileen Sullivan, CBE, MCHD, EFTEFT----ADVADV Eileen has been a and childbirth educator for almost two decades, and has always had a lively interest in natural and alternative healing methods. Eileen lives in Charlotte, NC, with her husband and four children.
