Reading Jerry Mintz's current AERO yesterday, I was saddened to learn that Bill is retiring from this task. We'll miss receiving it, unless someone else decides to take it up! Butin the meanwhile, I'd like to reply to Bill's comment, which I published in the Fall issue but felt odd about taking up editorial space to answer, since it was a Children's issueso I'd like to do it now. Sorry it took so long!Here's Bill's letter again, to refresh your memory: Dear. Mary, Thanks for the recent issue of SKOLE.It's going home with me to read at more leisure. But I'm getting overfilled with the critiques of the monopolistic teaching systems. We need to move beyond criticism and invent the future learning system. That's what I'll be looking for in SKOLE. My own visionofthe LEARNING COMMUNITY is enclosed in the attached.If you know of others who move beyond criticism,alternative schools and homeschooling, I would like to hear of them. KEEP UP YOUR GOOD WORKS. Bill Ellis I've written a response to him, but I thought some of you might like to take it on too. My own way of looking at needed changes is that, first, one needs to know for sure that one has a very broad grasp of the problems, as seen by a great many people (which would most assuredly come under the heading of "criticism"). But second, my belief is that we Americans have made far too many changes in national educational policy based on some one person or group's notion of how to solve the problemsas we did when the Russians launched Sputnick and we decided there wasn't enough math or science in our schoolsor when the book Why Johnny Can't Read came out, and teachers. across the land were told to teach kids phonics! And now the "experts" are blaming "whole language" teaching for lowered SAT scores!Surely it would be a good thing to hear from a lot of people who are DOING what you suggest, not just poritificating about it, before we begin promulgating or int enting "the future learning system." It strikes me that labeling a critique of the present system as overkill misses the point. So, I appreciate your criticism, and hope other readers will feel free to comment, but in the meanwhile I will go on doing what I believe innamely, "reporting out" on schools that work, as the only way I really believe in for dealing with learning systems, and giving "house" to people who have thoughtful criticisms to make on the status quo. Maybe I'm just not enough of an ideologue to play the intellectual game, but my experience with people who invent "learning systems of the future," as George Leonard did with his glowing image of education as ecstasy, is that in some cases they look to the future because they know they can't cope with the prblems of the present. And school boards, superintendents, principals have no ilterest in innovation. They have jobs to do. Whatever "innovation" filters down to the practical level of school as politics is likely to be a purely political decision. Nothing else is relevant at that level. When you ask that we "move beyond ... alternative schools and homeschooling," I hear you really saying, "I- eyfocus on public schooling. Nothing else is really relevant." f ine, if you believe that.I do too, but I don't seem to draw the same conclusions from that notion you do. I truly believe, as John Gatto has pointed out endlessly, that public educaticn was not set up to accomplish the job you would like it to do.I don't think it ever will.

The Challenges and Benefits of Unschooling, According 1 to 232 Families Who Have Chosen that Route By: Peter GRAY & Gina RILEY Abstract Unschooling families (families that don’t send their children to school and don’t school them at home) were invited to participate in a survey about their unschooling practices. Two hundred and thirty two self-identified unschooling families, with at least one child over five years old, completed and returned the questionnaire. Qualitative analyses revealed considerable variability in the routes to unschooling and in the ways in which the parents saw themselves as involved in their children’s education. The biggest challenge expressed was that of overcoming feelings of criticism, or social pressure, that came from others who disapproved and from their own culturally-ingrained, habitual ways of thinking about education. The reported benefits of unschooling were numerous; they included improved learning, better attitudes about learning, and improved psychological and social wellbeing for the children; and increased closeness, harmony, and freedom for the whole family.

    Manhood in the Age of Aquarius Chapter 5 Tim Hodgdon Chapter 5 "We Here Work as Hard as We Can": The Farm's Sexual Division of Labor In the spring of 1975, Patricia Mitchell, her preschool son, and her lover, Don 1 Lapidus, arrived at the entrance to The Farm, hoping to join. They had read about the burgeoning commune in its book-length recruitment brochure, Hey, Beatnik, and after much discussion, had packed their possessions in their car. At the front gate, a man with a clipboard described the hippie village as a monastery of householder yogis where Stephen Gaskin's teachings guided daily labor and family life. Gaskin's students, he said, agreed to live together nonviolently, to consume a strictly vegan diet, and to hold all money and property in common. After some time at the gate, the three were admitted as "soakers," soaking up the new life that was The Farm.1 A member of the gate crew drove the new soakers to their host households. The 2 Mitchell-Lapidus trio were welcomed into a structure consisting of a large army tent (recall the frame–and–canvas structures in the television comedy M*A*S*H) flanked by two Caravan-vintage school buses, where twelve people made their home. For the duration of their time as soakers, the family slept on a couch in the tent.2 They arrived in time to help with preparations for dinner. Patricia joined women in the kitchen area of the tent, washing potatoes from the previous year's harvest.3 Over dinner, their hosts reminisced about The Farm's beginnings.

    Other Education: The Journal of Educational Alternatives ISSN 2049-2162 Volume 7(2018), Issue 2 · pp. 97-117 Unschooling and Social Justice/Multicultural Education: (Un)Realized Potential Kristan Morrison Radford University, US. Abstract An online survey of unschooling families (student-directed form of homeschooling) sought to discover whether and how unschooled children experience a social justice curriculum (one that seeks equity between cultures, ethnicities, genders, classes, and sexualities). The 2016 survey asked about unschooled children’s relationships with/recognition of people different from themselves, their degree of critical analysis of systems and institutions in society which created, maintain, and perpetuate inequities, and whether they had opportunities to envision and work for a just and equitable society. The philosophical tenets of unschooling complicate this query, and are explored. Findings illustrate that unschooling’s educational philosophy of “curriculum-as- lived” (as opposed to “curriculum-as-plan”) (Aoki, 2004) has the potential (though not realized by all unschooling families) to provide a unique approach to social justice/multicultural education, allowing unschooled children to learn about minoritized cultures, systems that led to the minoritization, and the possibilities and pathways to a more equitable society. Keywords unschooling, multicultural education, social justice, student-directed learning, homeschooling Introduction Unschooling defined Student-directed learning in the home, termed unschooling (Farenga, 1999), is a form of education in which parents eschew a formal or standardized curriculum and instead allow their children curricular freedom. In unschooling, “the learner’s freedom and autonomy [is] limited as little as possible, ...learning always starts with the individual’s needs, goals, and desires, and not with any supposed body of knowledge or societal demands” (Miller, 2004).

Consequently, this thesis engages with the early humanist writings of Karl Marx and the psychoanalytical Marxism of Herbert Marcuse to develop a Marxist conception of emancipation that can properly reckon with material and non-material factors of both oppression and emancipation. It is argued that the total human emancipation thereby envisioned consists of two components. First, the consciousness project entails revealing the alienating nature of capitalist relations and replacing these with relations that allow for free and self-conscious life-activity within a community of equality and mutuality. Second, the development project entails revealing the inhibitive nature of capitalist relations and replacing these with relations that allow for the fulfilment of human potential, marked by a new rationality guided by human needs.     A Survey of Grown Unschoolers Unschooling I: Overview of Findings A Survey of Families and Unschooled Adults Peter Gray Seventy-five unschooled adults report on their childhood and adult experiences. Published on June 7, 2014 by Peter Gray in Freedom to Learn In a study that preceded the one to be described here, my col- league Gina Riley and I surveyed parents in unschooling families— that is, in families where the children did not go to school and were not homeschooled in any curriculum-based way, but instead were allowed to take charge of their own education. The call for partic- ipants for that study was posted, in September, 2011, on my blog (here) and on various other websites, and a total of 232 families who met our criteria for participation responded and filled out the ques- tionnaire. Most respondents were mothers, only 9 were fathers. In that study we asked questions about their reasons for unschooling, the pathways by which they came to unschooling, and the major benefits and challenges of unschooling in their experience. I posted the results of that study as a series of three articles in this blog—here, here, and here—and Gina and I also published a paper on it in the Journal of Unschooling and Alternative Learning (here). Not surprisingly, the respondents in that survey were very enthu- siastic and positive about their unschooling experiences. They de- scribed benefits having to do with their children’s psychological and physical wellbeing, improved social lives, and improved effi- ciency of learning and attitudes about learning.

Through reflection and story she shares her own struggles and triumphs in learning about herself, her surroundings and the true desires and needs of her children. She also addresses and debunks some of the typical stereotypes and objections to home learning. In the end she sees that what had taken her several years to discover about and desire from the lifestyle of home learning took her children mere moments to embrace. Rationale The Beginning Choosing to homeschool wasn’t a natural decision. For my part it was very much about care, love, and concern, I will refrain from speaking about my husband other than to say how very supportive he always is of my ‘strange’ or unconventional ideas. When I was a young single-mom, of 19, I didn’t believe in homeschooling as something that was good for children. I imagined sickly looking pale children who had no friends ISSN:1916-8128 A Personal Journey Into Home Learning and didn’t go outside. I laugh now, thinking about how absurd and naive my own impressions were, nonetheless I came by them honestly, as I suspect many others do. It was through a series of coincidental conversations with people who were clearly more open than I was, that I began to realize that my misunderstandings on homeschooling were more stereotypes than truth and far more prejudicial than reasonably commonsensical.
