Upottery Baptisms 1559-1902 St Mary's Church Baptisms 1559 to 1902 Upottery, Devon UK St Mary's Church, Upottery, Devon UK Baptisms 1559 to 1902 Transcription made by: Roy Parkhouse email: [email protected] web site : http://www.parkhouse.org.uk When the microfiche copies of the Upottery parish registers were purchased in March 2002 (£36), I was advised by the Devon Record Office that the Upottery Parochial Church Council had agreed to the sale subject to the proviso that any profit derived from their use should be paid to the Church in Upottery. This document has been formed by joining a transcription done around 2003 to one done in the past few months. The earlier transcription covered the period 1702 to 1902. At that time, I found the handwriting of the earlier entries too difficult to read. However, my skills seem to have improved and in the past few months it has been possible to transcribe back to the earliest entries, prior to 1702. 7 entries covering the period 9 November 1856 to 27 February 1857 were supplied by the Devon Record Office because they were missing from the supplied microfiche. The sheet accompanying the Devon County Council microfiche describes the ones used for this transcription as follows: UPOTTERY baptisms MF 1,2 (1559/60-1653), MF 2,3 (1653-1696), MF 3-5 (1702/3-1768), MF 8,9 (1768-1812), MF 9-11 (1813-1842), MF 17,18 (1842-1872), MF 22-24 (1872-1931). Any uncertainties, apparent errors and omissions should be resolved by reference to the fiche copies or, better still, if permitted, by reference to the original registers held at the Devon Record Office in Exeter. • The Making of an Evangelical Baptist Leader
The Making of an Evangelical Baptist Leader John Rippon's early years, 1751-1773 NGLISH NONCONFORMITY underwent a radical trans formation during the long life of John Rippon (1751-1836).1 EIn his early years the older Nonconformity which had become narrow and rigid seemed to have lost its soul. The reasons for this are com plex and must involve social and political factors, but the main emphasis has usually been laid on the widely-adopted High Calvinism which held most of Nonconformity in a crushing grip of determinism. This was especially true of the Particular Baptists. Under the minutely systematic theology of men like John Gill (1697-1771),2 chief architect of this unbalanced Calvinism, any form of mission was virtually a heresy. Inevitably the Baptists became an inward looking community, and spiritual vigour sadly declined. Yet by the end of the eighteenth century, and the beginning of the nineteenth, in a period of crisis and social discontent, Nonconformity clearly had revived. With the whole church in England it shared in a renewal, the broad outworkings of which are familiar: humanitarian and philanthropic movements, beginnings of Missionary and Bible Societies, evangelism restored to its rightful place in the life of the church, popular education evolving. How had this come about? The answer is usually linked with the Evangelical Revival, that movement which influenced most denominations in England, that "bracing breeze which had come sweeping down from the hills of Methodism over Baptist meadows, as well as Independent fields."3 This nineteenth-century judgment has been recently confirmed, with a more modem metaphor: "Dissent had drawn an enormous blood transfusion from the veins of the Evangelical Revival".4 Dr.

  • East Devon Bobbins Home Page
East Devon Bobbins Home Page Parent Page EAST DEVON BOBBINS. By BRIAN LEMIN. December 2001. Not Yet completed Introduction. Did you notice that I called these "East Devon" bobbins and not "Honiton" bobbins? (By the way Honiton is pronounced Huniton). I am afraid that indicates that I am trying to skirt around a somewhat modern controversy amongst lace makers in that area. It would appear that the term "Honiton" lace has lost its generic application to all laces made in the East Devon area and has taken on something of a dominating term where those who are not very knowledgeable seem to think that the town of Honiton is the only place that made lace in the area and that the types of lace that they made are the only ones of note. I do not want to buy into this argument, mainly because I am in no way an expert on lace and could not comment on the various claims of the many lace making towns in East Devon, but what I will argue is the the established conventions of the descriptions of lace making areas in England. There is obviously a convention that we name English lace bobbins after a particular area of England, i.e., the East Midlands, South Bucks, etc. Having said that I must immediately concede that that there are exceptions to this convention by calling the Dorsetshire and Wiltshire bobbins by their town name of Downton. None-the-less I am happy to go along with the geographical convention for this article if only to remain good friends with those lace makers that were so kind to me in that area during my recent visit to them.
