Tanaji, after inspection found out an unguarded steep precipice on the western side of the fort and decided to attack from that side.

Tanaji along with 300 troops climbed the precipice with the help of a rope and entered inside the fort.

According to the plan Suryaji along with 500 troops went to the other gate i.e. the Kalyan gate and waited there for the gate to be opened by Tanaji's men.

After getting inside the fort, the Mavalas opened the Kalyan gate.

Then a fierce battle took place.

During the fight with Udaybhan, Tanaji's shield was broken.

So he tied his upper garment around his hand for defence.

In the end both Udaybhan and Tanaji were mortally wounded and fell fighting.

After the death of Tanaji, the maratha troops started to retreat.

But Suryaji cut the rope by which they had entered the fort and ordered them to fight with the enemy and not run as cowards.

The Mavalas fought bravely and conquered the fort back.

After hearing the news of Tanaji’s death, Shivaji Maharaj and were grief stricken.

Shivaji Maharaj said "THE FORT IS WON BUT THE LION IS DEAD ."

So KONDANA FORT was renamed as .

This event took place in the year 1670.
