If it were not for the financial assistance we provide in the form of grants and loans, higher education would be reserved only for the wealthy. Although the University is able to allocate considerable federal and state funds to qualified students, experience has shown that public money alone is unequal to our needs. For that reason I would like to pay special tribute to those private and corporate donors whose impressive generosity has made available the wide range of awards recorded in this publication. Past, present and future students alike stand in their debt. Few investments are nobler than investments in higher education. Without them society can never reap the benefits represented by brainpower and this state would be a poorer place. With the help of financial aid we can free students to concentrate on their academic programs so that they might attain the full achievements of which they are capable.
