  • Building Cold War Warriors: Socialization of the Final Cold War Generation
BUILDING COLD WAR WARRIORS: SOCIALIZATION OF THE FINAL COLD WAR GENERATION Steven Robert Bellavia A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Andrew M. Schocket, Advisor Karen B. Guzzo Graduate Faculty Representative Benjamin P. Greene Rebecca J. Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

  • Bestiary of the Realms: Volume 2
Bestiary of the Realms: Volume 2 by Thomas M. Costa and Eric L. Boyd Art by Noëlle Triaureau Editorial assistance from Joe “Warlockco” Weber A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS Welcome to volume two of the Bestiary of the Realms. As this is our second volume, you’ll find several score new or converted monsters, as well as a few different interpretations of monsters that have already been converted. A word of caution, just as many official 3E and 3.5E monsters did not slavishly follow earlier write-ups of those monsters, neither do the monsters herein. Instead, we did our best to consider all sources, hopefully make full and creative use of the 3.5E rules (including non-core WotC books), and in many cases add a little bit here and there to many of the monsters, even if it was in only adding or updating their Realms lore. A few have even been renamed. One last note, we’ve done our best to include source references for all things where appropriate, except those found in the three core rulebooks or Expanded Psionics Handbook. Until then, Sword High! – Thomas M. Costa and Eric L. Boyd ABOUT THE AUTHORS Thomas M. Costa is a senior analyst with the Government Accountability Office. He has been a contributor to several Wizards of the Coast products including Demihuman Deities and Races of Faerûn, and is the author of several Dragon Magazine and Wizards of the Coast website articles. He can be reached at [email protected]. Eric L. Boyd is a software designer and freelance game designer.

DESCRIPTORS *Bands (Music); Content Analysis; Discographies; *Music; Musicians; *Popular Culture IDENTIFIERS Media History; Music Ensembles; *Rock and Roll; *Rock Music ABSTRACT Based on the argument that (contrary to critical opinion) the musicians in the various bands associated with Bosstown Sound were indeed talented, cohesive individuals and that the bands' lack of renown was partially a result of ill-treatment by record companies and the press, this paper traces the development of the Bosstown Sound from its beginnings in the nightclubs of Boston in 1967 to its end in 1969. In addition, the paper provides complete discographies, including critical commentary, of records produced by bands associated with the Bosstown Sound. The bands of the Bosstown Sound include: The Apple Pie Motherhood Band, The Bagatelle, The Beacon Street Union, Bo Grumpus, Eagle, Earth Opera, Eden's Children, Sure Looks Real, The Ill Wind, Jolliver Arkansaw, Orpheus, Phluph, Puff, and Ultimate Spinach. • Nowhere to Go but In
Nowhere To Go But In Talks given from 29/5/74 am to 9/6/74 am Original in Hindi 16 Chapters Year published: Discourse series, title in Hindi: "Nahim Ram" Nowhere To Go But In Chapter #1 Chapter title: From the Alone to the Alone 25 May 1974 am in Buddha Hall [NOTE: This is a translation from the Hindi discourses: Nahim Ram Bin Thaon. It is being edited for publication, and this version is for reference only.] Question BELOVED OSHO, BEFORE WE ASK ANYTHING WE WOULD LIKE TO OFFER OUR GRATITUDE AND GREETINGS TO YOU. THE MYSTICS HAVE ALWAYS SAID THAT "THERE IS NOWHERE TO GO BUT IN." YOU ALSO SAY THE SAME. WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE WORDS, BUT OUR UNDERSTANDING OF IT DOES NOT GO BEYOND THE VERBAL LEVEL. COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THE DEEPER MEANING OF IT? Understanding at the verbal level is not worth calling understanding. In the world of religion there is no greater deception than words. The words can be understood, there is no difficulty in that, but that which is hidden behind the words remains uncomprehended, and that is the real difficulty. When the word is understood, but not that which lies behind the word, life becomes a great turmoil. We create the illusion of knowing when we do not know, and nothing is more dangerous than assuming that one knows when one does not. Life begins at the point where knowing happens. Life is transformed through knowing. But if we live under the illusion that we know religion because we know the words, then our mind travels in one direction while our life travels in another, and often these directions are completely opposite.

  • Prestige Label Discography
Discography of the Prestige Labels Robert S. Weinstock started the New Jazz label in 1949 in New York City. The Prestige label was started shortly afterwards. Originaly the labels were located at 446 West 50th Street, in 1950 the company was moved to 782 Eighth Avenue. Prestige made a couple more moves in New York City but by 1958 it was located at its more familiar address of 203 South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, New Jersey. Prestige recorded jazz, folk and rhythm and blues. The New Jazz label issued jazz and was used for a few 10 inch album releases in 1954 and then again for as series of 12 inch albums starting in 1958 and continuing until 1964. The artists on New Jazz were interchangeable with those on the Prestige label and after 1964 the New Jazz label name was dropped. Early on, Weinstock used various New York City recording studios including Nola and Beltone, but he soon started using the Rudy van Gelder studio in Hackensack New Jersey almost exclusively. Rudy van Gelder moved his studio to Englewood Cliffs New Jersey in 1959, which was close to the Prestige office in Bergenfield. Producers for the label, in addition to Weinstock, were Chris Albertson, Ozzie Cadena, Esmond Edwards, Ira Gitler, Cal Lampley Bob Porter and Don Schlitten. Rudy van Gelder engineered most of the Prestige recordings of the 1950’s and 60’s. The line-up of jazz artists on Prestige was impressive, including Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Art Farmer, Red Garland, Wardell Gray, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet, “Brother” Jack McDuff, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Don Patterson, Sonny Rollins, Shirley Scott, Sonny Stitt and Mal Waldron.
