The Bahá'í Faith and Wicca
The Bahá’í Faith and Wicca - A Comparison of Relevance in Two Emerging Religions by Lil Osborn Abstract The purpose of this paper is to make comparisons between the growth and potential for further development of the Bahá’í Faith and Wicca in Britain. This study uses the Theory of Relevance developed by Sperber and Wilson to explain cognition in the field of linguistics and applied to the field of religious studies by the author in an earlier work. The paper begins by outlining the milieu in which both traditions began and notes possible overlaps of individuals and networks. It continues by contrasting motifs of beliefs and values between the two systems and investigates the history of both by arguing that relevance is the driving force in their respective development. Thus, the Bahá’í Faith which began by attracting radical and progressive elements gradually became more conservative as its principles became generally accepted and its legalistic structure ensured the upholding of traditional concepts of family and sexuality. Conversely, the interaction with feminism and the ecology movement caused Wiccans to embrace a radical and inclusive perspective which was not present in the inception of Gardnerian tradition. Finally, the potential for growth and influence of both traditions is assessed within the context of the Theory of Relevance. MAN OF MARVELS – CLARENCE BICKNELL A Talk by Renchi Bicknell Together with Marcus, Susie and Vanessa Bicknell Given to The Glastonbury Positive Living Group November 15th 2018 Renchi Bicknell, the writer of this presentation made in Glastonbury in November 2018, is the great grand nephew of Clarence Bicknell. This evening I hope to share something of the story of my Great Great Uncle Clarence and even touch on a connection to Glastonbury and the Blue Bowl through Dr John Arthur Goodchild. Yesterday 140 years ago Clarence noted in his diary that he “dined with Dr Goodchild at the Grand Hotel” ...that was in November 1878. Dr Goodchild was 27 and Clarence had just celebrated his 37th birthday. Both were starting new posts in Bordighera - Clarence as chaplain to the Anglican Church and John Goodchild as the English doctor. Both were about to embark on different transformational journeys. It is amazing to think that in 20 years time Clarence would be discovering many thousands of rock engravings in the Alpes Maritimes and that Dr Goodchild would be completing his inspirational Celtic work “The Light of the West”. P. Blavatsky, Annie Besant, C. W. Leadbeater, and especially Aleister Crowley have been well served by academic enquiry and by published accounts of their lives and work, Violet Evans, neé Firth (aka ‘Dion Fortune’), has suffered comparative neglect, as has her concept of the ‘Masters’ who inspired and informed her work. These factors, alongside the longevity of her Society of the Inner Light (still flourishing), are the catalysts for my embarking on this thesis. Chapter 1 discusses the method of approach, covers Fortune’s definitions of frequent occult terms, and compares observations of her work by fellow occultists and outside observers. Chapter 2 is a comprehensive review of mainly recent academic research into the role of intermediaries in magic and religion from ancient times, and serves as a background to Fortune’s own esoteric philosophy, showing that she was heir to a tradition with a long history. -

321 ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in Egypt Early September 1910 – 5 December 1913 Julio Savi Abstract ‘Abdu’l-Bahá discontinuously sojourned in Egypt from early September 1910 to 5 December 1913. This paper is a concise study of the historical and political background of this sojourn and of its chronicle. Egyptian cities and towns visited by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá are briefly described as they were in those days. Members of the Holy Family who visited Him in Egypt are mentioned. The public opinion reaction and the press coverage are succinctly outlined. Several important personages and resident and visiting Bahá’ís who met Him are listed. My Reality is ‘Abdu’l-Bahá: and Service to all the human race is my perpetual Religion…. (From a letter sent to the friends in New York, January 1st, 1907.) Groupwork For each group discussion the group should choose a facilitator. It would be best to change the facilitator for each piece of group work over the series of workshops but the group will remain the same. During the consultation, the facilitator’s role is to keep track of the time, to ensure that: 1. everyone contributes something, 2. no one keeps repeating the same point, and 3. no one makes excessively long contributions. All group members need to keep their own record of the main points for using in the role play at the end of the group consultation. The notes should be easy to use in a conversation. Both groups will use the same material. A. It is perhaps necessary to explain that the Manifestation of God, in a way that underpins part of the imagery used here, is seen as a Lote1 (or boundary) Tree marking a line ‘beyond which there is no passing.’ The offshoots of this Tree, in this case the descendants of Bahá’u’lláh, are described as Branches. -

Beyond the aetiology debate: the “great LSD scandal” at Newhaven Private Hospital & the social foundations of mental health legislation in Victoria, Australia Megan Kristine Lomax ORCID ID: 0000-0002-1457-8247 Doctor of Philosophy October 2017 Department of History & Philosophy of Science School of Historical & Philosophical Studies Faculty of Arts Thesis submitted in total fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 1 ABSTRACT This research presents a case for the extension of existing analyses of Australian psychiatric scandals beyond the conclusion that such events are an inherent feature of the profession by virtue of its failure to resolve the aetiology debate. A mid-century impasse in the aetiology debate – the continuous shifting over time of professional commitment between organic and environmental aetiologies of mental illness – has been identified as the catalyst for the emergence of the therapeutic paradigm of eclecticism that fostered the deep sleep therapy and ‘Therapeutic Community’ programs that were central to Australia’s two infamous psychiatric scandals at Chelmsford and Townsville, respectively. While these two affairs were enduring the scrutiny of commissions of inquiry, the recommendations of which translated to the legislative reform of mental health services in the states of New South Wales and Queensland, a third such scandal was unfolding at Newhaven Private Hospital in Victoria involving the “injudicious use” of therapeutic LSD. By the late 1980s and early 90s, a number of former “patients” of Newhaven emerged claiming that they had never suffered any mental illness and that the LSD they had received had not been administered for therapeutic purposes but rather as a recruitment tool for a fringe religious sect known as The Family that had commandeered the hospital and the loyalty of a number of its staff.
