Brendan Mc Namara - Student No. 103183238 PhD Arts - National University of Ireland, Cork Study of Religions Department Submitted - June, 2017 Head of Department - Dr. Lidia Guzy Supervisors - Professor Oliver Scharbrodt (External) - Dr. James Kapalo (UCC) 1 Abstract The central theme of this work is an examination of the contribution made by home-grown reformers to the construction of new religious frameworks in Britain at the turn of the twentieth century. I focus on the evolution of a worldview oriented towards Asia and key individuals that sought interaction with religious ideas from the ‘East’. I will take as a case study the reception in Britain of the head of the Bahai religion, Abdul Baha, who visited in 1911 and again in late 1912. Through an analysis of the discourses he was invited to engage with, and the reasons his British hosts pursued these encounters, I recover lost aspects of what was a vibrant and multidimensional religious ‘field’. This will necessitate a review of why and how scholars of the new ‘science of religion’, ‘Celticists’, leading Protestant reformers and others expended much energy in supporting the Bahai leader’s public programme as he progressed through Britain. These interactions and their prominent promoters, significant in the context of the history of religions in Europe, are now mostly ‘forgotten’ or are ‘remembered’ in a particular fashion. Endeavouring to answer why these events are consigned as a footnote in history exposes a complex nexus of factors bearing on agency, myopic interpretation and the manner in which this history has been captured and interpreted. A key factor is the effect of the catastrophic conflagration which beset the world in 1914 on universalist worldviews. The figures analysed in this thesis were exponents of ideas and philosophies that are familiar in the present. Consideration of their experience illuminates similar contemporary discursive trends and leads me to posit the aetiology of such religious journeying as occurring long before it is generally thought such ideas were prevalent. But gradually, he began to feel more and more trapped, and struggled to find his way out and discover a life of his own making. Both a memoir and a narrative of Finch’s time with the guru, Without the Guru explores the importance of thinking for oneself rather than adhering to anyone else’s belief system. While it examines the popularity of cults and the seductive atmosphere they generate, Finch also champions how to find answers within the context of one’s own life and details the process that led Finch to face life’s main issues on his own terms—and his own two feet.

He teaches nothing nor organizes sessions of meditation and Satsang (talks about spirituality and non-duality). He isn’t more or less "awakened" than anybody else when he doesn’t sleep in the arms of Morpheus. He doesn’t claim to be free from anything and doesn’t think to have realized the Self. He doesn’t live in Nirvana or in a world of non-duality, and even less in a fourth dimension of pure consciousness or in heaven, but on earth as all other human beings. He’s actually a very normal and ordinary human being and not God, the Self, the universal consciousness, stillness or an ocean of bliss. He writes to share his experience with other seekers of truth and what is according to him good for humanity. As a matter of fact, he is a seeker of truth and that’s why he doesn’t hesitate to denounce the delirious abuses of spirituality (especially in the non-duality circles) that we can witness today in the West. His initiation with Swami Girdanandaji from Uttarkashi and study of Advaita Vedanta with Mr. Brahma Chaitanya from Gangotri enable him to have a relatively clear idea of what is meant by the term "non-duality".     The Bahá’í Faith and Wicca - A Comparison of Relevance in Two Emerging Religions by Lil Osborn Abstract The purpose of this paper is to make comparisons between the growth and potential for further development of the Bahá’í Faith and Wicca in Britain. This study uses the Theory of Relevance developed by Sperber and Wilson to explain cognition in the field of linguistics and applied to the field of religious studies by the author in an earlier work. The paper begins by outlining the milieu in which both traditions began and notes possible overlaps of individuals and networks. It continues by contrasting motifs of beliefs and values between the two systems and investigates the history of both by arguing that relevance is the driving force in their respective development. Thus, the Bahá’í Faith which began by attracting radical and progressive elements gradually became more conservative as its principles became generally accepted and its legalistic structure ensured the upholding of traditional concepts of family and sexuality. Conversely, the interaction with feminism and the ecology movement caused Wiccans to embrace a radical and inclusive perspective which was not present in the inception of Gardnerian tradition. Finally, the potential for growth and influence of both traditions is assessed within the context of the Theory of Relevance. This evening I hope to share something of the story of my Great Great Uncle Clarence and even touch on a connection to Glastonbury and the Blue Bowl through Dr John Arthur Goodchild. Yesterday 140 years ago Clarence noted in his diary that he “dined with Dr Goodchild at the Grand Hotel” ...that was in November 1878. Dr Goodchild was 27 and Clarence had just celebrated his 37th birthday. Both were starting new posts in Bordighera - Clarence as chaplain to the Anglican Church and John Goodchild as the English doctor. Both were about to embark on different transformational journeys. It is amazing to think that in 20 years time Clarence would be discovering many thousands of rock engravings in the Alpes Maritimes and that Dr Goodchild would be completing his inspirational Celtic work “The Light of the West”.
