Pecora, Director For sale by the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office Washington, D.C. 20402 In accordance with the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, Sept. 3,1964) and the Conference Report on Senate bill 4, 88th Congress, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines are making mineral surveys of wilderness and primitive areas. Areas officially designated as "wilderness," "wild," or "canoe," when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Areas classed as "primi­ tive" were not included in the Wilderness System, but the act provides that each primitive area should be studied for its suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. This bulletin reports the results of a mineral survey in the Emigrant Basin primitive area, California. The area discussed in the report corresponds to the area under consideration for wilderness status. It is not identical with the original Emigrant Basin Primi­ tive Area as defined because modifications of the bound­ ary have been proposed for the area to be considered for wilderness status.

It is intended as a baseline study that should periodically be revised and updated. It is a part (Unit 11, Volume B) of the 7-volume Framework for Research and Management of Archaeological Resources in the North- Central Sierra Nevada (R. Jackson et al. 1994) and it can guide future research in the Forest. Chapter I contains a description of the present-day natural landscape of the Forest. We use the term landscape in the broadest cultural and geographic sense that includes the natural features, plants, animals, and people of the region. This chapter discusses physiography, hydrology, geology, geomorphology, climate, vegetation, and wildlife. The second half of this chapter summarizes paleoenvironmental data for the region. Chapter I gives the reader some appreciation for the forces that have shaped the modern landscape. From our limited human perspectives, we tend to forget that the landscape we see today may have been significantly different in the past. Changes in climate and habitat may have had profound effects on people living in the area in the past. Prevailing climatic conditions have fluctuated over time. Vegetation communities and wildlife associations have developed in response to these climatic oscillations.

While no mountain in the Sierra can be climbed without time, effort, and risk, these peaks represent a sub-set of the full SPS List that are relatively easy to get to, pose less danger than others on the List, are fun to climb and/or hold other qualities, and are drawn from the main areas of the range. The Sampler, which has been approved by the SPS Management Committee, thus provides a good introduction to the Sierra for climbers of varying degrees of experience and ability.
