Yet, much has Conservation changed in the two seemingly disparate practices over the last two decades, motivating an updated evaluation of Aquaculture the scientific evidence for how aquaculture currently impacts conservation, as well as prospects for further Ecosystem services alignment and research. Here we present a new perspective on conservation aquaculture, which we redefine as Recovery “the use of human cultivation of an aquatic organism for the planned management and protection of a natural Restoration resource.” Looking across scales of conservation aquaculture that include single species to ecosystem level benefits (and limitations), we highlight ways aquaculture has historically, and is currently being integrated into conservation (e.g., habitat restoration of oyster beds) and areas that could be improved for the protection of critical species and habitats (e.g., aquarium trade of coral reef species). With a more strategic focus, there appears to be notable conservation aquaculture potential via the cultivation of species for harvest that could provide wild harvest alleviation through replacement or supplement – particularly for over-exploited species – and/or ecosystem services, such as improved water quality and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. -

Coastal Resources Management Project
ASEAN - US Cooperative Program on Marine Sciences: Coastal Resources Management Project Association of Southeast Asian Nations United States Agency for International Development International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management The goal of the Coastal Resources Management Project (CRMP) is to increase existing capabilities within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region to develop and implement comprehensive, multidisciplinary and environmentally sustainable CRM strategies through: analyzing, documenting and disseminating information on trends in coastal resources development; increasing awareness of the importance of CRM policies and identifying, and where possible, strengthening existing management capabilities;. pro- viding technical solutions to coastal resources use conflicts; .promoting institutional arrangements that bring multisectoral planning to coastal resources development. The CRMP, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is being executed by the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM). The CRMP's Project Steering Committee, composed of represen- tatives from each of the ASEAN nations, is responsible for establishing overall project policy direction and overseeing and evaluating project activities and performance. The CRMP has two components. The first is the development of site-specific CRM plans in the respective ASEAN countries. Research Needs 139 References 140 This chapter emphasizes the ecological responses of fishes to spatial and temporal variation in tropical stream habitats. At the global scale, the Neotropics has the highest fish fauna richness, with estimates ranging as high as 8000 species. Larger drainage basins tend to be associated with greater local and regional species richness. Within longitudinal stream gradients, the number of species increases with declining elevation. Tropical stream fishes encompass highly diverse repro- ductive strategies ranging from egg scattering to mouth brooding and livebearing, with reproductive seasons ranging from a few days to the entire year. Relationships between life-history strategies and population dynamics in different environmental settings are reviewed briefly. Fishes in tropical streams exhibit diverse feeding behaviors, including specialized niches, such as fin and scale feeding, not normally observed in temperate stream fishes. Many tropical stream fishes have greater diet breadth while exploiting abundant resources during the wet season, and lower diet breadth during the dry season as a consequence of specialized feeding on a subset of resources. Niche complementarity with high overlap in habitat use is usually accompanied by low dietary overlap. Ecological specializations and strong associations between form and function in tropical stream fishes provide clear examples of evolutionary convergence. -

PH Rolfs, s/n, Campus Universitário, 36570-000 Viçosa, MG, Brasil Manuscript received on March 30, 2010; accepted for publication on December 21, 2010 ABSTRACT This research studied the effect of temperature on the reproduction of Bracon vulgaris Ashmead, an ectoparasitoid of cotton boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis Boheman) at constant temperatures of 20, 25 and 30◦C, 70 ± 10% RH and a photophase of 14 h. Females of the parasitoid produced a greater number of eggs when exposed to 25◦C (124.65 eggs) in relation to those exposed to 20 (43.40 eggs) and 30◦C (49.60 eggs). The number of parasitized larvae per female of B. vulgaris at 25◦C (71.75) was greater than at 20◦C (31.40) and 30◦C (25.15). The daily intrinsic rates of increase (rm) were –0.007 at 20◦C, 0.07 at 25◦C and 0.03 at 30◦C, revealing that the temperature of 25◦C produced increases of 1,100 and 133% in the value rm in relation to temperatures of 20 and 30◦C, respectively. -

The department has an important mission which is to render services relating to social welfare, social work and the promotion and support given to local communities/authorities to encourage them to be involved in the social welfare service providing.The aim was to ensure that the target groups could develop the capacity to lead their life and become self-reliant. In addition to capacity building of the target groups, services or activities by the department were also geared towards reducing social inequality within society. The implementation of activities or rendering of services proceeded under the policy which was stemmed from the key concept of participation by all concerned parties in brainstorming, implementing and sharing of responsibility. Social development was carried out in accordance with the 4 strategic issues: upgrading the system of providing quality social development and welfare services, enhancing the capacity of the target population to be well-prepared for emerging changes, promoting an integrated approach and enhancing the capacity of quality networks, and developing the organization management towards becoming a learning organization.
