Industrial Dispersion in Thailand with Changes in Trade Policies
International Journal of Asian Social Science, 2014, 4(7): 806-819 International Journal of Asian Social Science ISSN(e): 2224-4441/ISSN(p): 2226-5139 journal homepage: http://www.aessweb.com/journals/5007 INDUSTRIAL DISPERSION IN THAILAND WITH CHANGES IN TRADE POLICIES Kenji Nozaki Faculty of Economics and Management, Surugadai University, Hanno-City, Saitama, Japan ABSTRACT Thailand, which is an industrial core of the GMS, hosts various industries. An understanding of current location of industry in Thailand is important in planning the future industrial network. In particular, as economic linkage within the GMS is becoming stronger, changes of industrial location with trade liberalization are an important correlation. Krugman and Elizondo (1996) provided a theoretical model for this relation. The present author conducted an empirical survey to determine whether industrial location in Thailand conforms to the Krugman and Elizondo’s model. This empirical study uses data on manufacturing of gross provincial product. The proportion of manufacturing within each province, and the Herfindahl index deriving from the proportion, were used. The result is that industrial location of Thailand conforms to Krugman and Elizondo’s model. During the period of import substitution, Bangkok grew to a large metropolis and gradually expanded into neighboring provinces, with escalating congestion costs. After an export oriented policy was implemented, the industries started to disperse, and some provinces became new industrial cores, with ports. In considering the extension of industries to neighboring countries, it appears that promoted investment projects, which could be leading indicators of future production, do not guarantee an increase of production in border provinces, at least in the middle term. -

Popularly known as “The Rose of the North” and with an en- chanting location on the banks of the Ping River, the city and its surroundings are blessed with stunning natural beauty and a uniquely indigenous cultural identity. Founded in 12 by King Mengrai as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai has had a long and mostly independent history, which has to a large extent preserved a most distinctive culture. This is witnessed both in the daily lives of the people, who maintain their own dialect, customs and cuisine, and in a host of ancient temples, fascinating for their northern Thai architectural Styles and rich decorative details. Beyond the city, Chiang Mai province spreads over an area of 20,000 sq. km. offering some of the most picturesque scenery in the whole Kingdom. The fertile Ping River Valley, a patchwork of paddy fields, is surrounded by rolling hills and the province as a whole is one of forested mountains (including Thailand’s highest peak, Doi Inthanon), jungles and rivers. Here is the ideal terrain for adventure travel by trekking on elephant back, river rafting or four-wheel drive safaris in a natural wonderland. -

The objective was to identify guidelines for the development of Ubonchat Sattathip cultural silver jewelry. This was to increase value of silver jewelry products responsive to the users’ preferences for cultural silver jewelry. The research used both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The results of the study were the identified guideline to development of Ubonchat Sattathip Design in the shape of a beautiful lotus in 9 colors and these colors represent nine different gemstones, and positive responses to the new design from the silver jewelry users under study. The combination between a silver jewelry pattern and gem colors created added value to the cultural silver jewelry. The opinion of users on the cultural silver jewelry Ubonchat Sattathip was at the high level (Mean=4.43, S.D = 0.38). Government Center Water Treatment Plant Kamphaeng Phet Province, Thailand 1. Background information Kamphaeng Phet is a province in the lower north of Thailand. The Ping River (main tributary of the Chao Phraya River) is located at the east of the province, while the west part is mostly mountains covered with forests. Government Center Water Treatment Plant (GCWTP) is owned and operated by the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) of Thailand, a state-owned company established in 1979. This water treatment plant is one of the 233 water treatment plants under PWA. The GCWTP was constructed in 2003 with the capacity of 12,000 m3/d. Additional information is presented in Table 1. Water source, the Ping River, is at a distance of 4 km from the water treatment plant. Main components of the treatment process are hydraulic mixing, mechanical sludge collector system, fine sand filter, and water backwash with surface washing. 2. Water treatment process flow The major water treatment unit processes are presented as below (Figure 1): Raw water extraction (Ping river) → Raw water pumping → Pipeline static mixing (alum) and hydraulic jump (pre-chlorination) → Flocculation (baffled channel type) → Sedimentation (rectangular, mechanical sludge collector) → Rapid sand filter → Disinfection (post- chlorination) → Clear Well → High lift pump building Sludge treatment: sludge generated from sedimentation and backwashing is transferred to three ponds. -

In other words, if there is a sharp strategy, it will be able to convert social, cultural capital into goods and services until it can create a career or income for the owner of the capital very well. This research aimed to study the outstanding potential of appropriate socio-cultural capital to be converted into goods and services in the Lower Isaan region and to present a way to develop the outstanding potential of socio-cultural capital into goods and services, this research is a qualitative study that explores information from relevant literature, and interviews with key informants including Academics, experts, entrepreneurs, businessmen, villagers, government officials involved from all 4 provinces selected by a specific selection method of 40 people analyzed data using the Content Analysis method. The research results found that; The outstanding potentials of appropriate socio-cultural capital will be converted into goods and services in the lower northeastern region, namely: (1) UbonRatchathani area: Candle parade tradition, KabBua cloth, Ban Pa Aau brassware. (2) Sisaket province consists of the Sanonta tradition, Sheng Sanai Lai long boat tradition, Madan grilled chicken. -

The importance and specialness of Nakorntri Truet is not all that much. Nakhon Tri Trung also has folk performances that have been passed on for hundreds of years, such as Rabum kor kai, Ram klong chang, Ram wong puen baan and other types of folk performances which is outstanding and beautiful. Myanmar migrants are at increased risk for nocturnally periodic Wuchereria bancrofti causing imported bancroftian filariasis. They have a significant influence on the effectiveness of diethylcar- bamazine (DEC) mass treatment at the provincial level in the National Program to Eliminate Lym- phatic Filariasis (PELF) during the fiscal years (FY) 2002-2006, in Thailand. Two oral doses of DEC 6 mg/kg are given twice a year to the eligible Myanmar migrants (≥2 years old). A 300 mg DEC provo- cation test is given once a year to all Myanmar migrants with work permits. Effectiveness evaluation parameters, such as cumulative index (CI) and the effectiveness ratio (ER), were obtained after 2 years of the multiple-dose DEC treatment program in Ranong Province, Southern Thailand. By cross- sectional night blood surveys at the end of FY 2003 in two districts of Ranong Province, the microfi- larial positive rates (MPR) were 0.8% and 1.2% for Mueang Ranong and Kra Buri, respectively. The MPR in the agricultural (1.5%) and industrial (0.4%) occupations were not significantly different from each other. Our findings suggest that most untreated microfilaremics working in agriculture, with short-term residency in Thailand, may have delayed multiple-dose DEC treatment. Development of a National Urban Mobility Programme - an Inventory and Assessment of National Urban Mobility in Thailand A project of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in collaboration with the Thai Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) Final Report November 2019 Development of a National Urban Mobility Programme Project Background Transport is the highest energy-consuming sector in 40% of all countries worldwide, and causes about a quarter of energy-related CO2 emissions. To limit global warming to two degrees, an extensive transformation and decarbonisation of transport is necessary. The TRANSfer project’s objective is to increase the efforts of developing countries and emerging economies for climate-friendly transport. The project acts as a mitigation action preparation facility and thus, specifically supports the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) of the Paris Agreement. The project supports several countries (including Peru, Colombia, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia) in developing greenhouse gas mitigation measures in transport. The TRANSfer project is implemented by GIZ and funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and operates on three levels.
