NGO Data Model (Salesforce) Breakout (2:30 PM - 3:15 PM; Jesse Owens - Building L) Michael Duggan, CIO, Trócaire Programs and projects are at the heart of all of our member organizations operations. To date, we have built custom solutions to manage these vital elements, resulting in significant implementation and maintenance costs. If we could have a standard NGO data model that could be used out of the box, it would dramatically reduce implementation time and costs, while at the same time improve our ability to collaborate at a systems level. Join us as Salesforce CTO Cheryl Porro presents a view of how they could deliver a standard NGO data model. We will conclude with a discussion of the challenges of moving toward a standard data model in our sector.

Towards a NetHope Working Group on Humanitarian UAVs Breakout (2:30 PM - 3:15 PM; Kodiak - Building I) Andrew Schroeder, Director of Research and Analysis, Direct Relief Unmanned aerial vehicles, or “drones,” have advanced rapidly as part of the technical repertoire of humanitarian organizations over the past year. Key applications include disaster relief, conservation and anti-poaching work, water assessments, and refugee camp management. UAVs pose new challenges to NGOs on the policy front. Given the scope and complexity of issues involved in the effective implementation of UAVs, this session aims to convene a working group of members for the sake of ongoing technical, policy and institutional use-case engagement.

ITIL Made Easy – Introducing IT Best Practice Breakout (2:30 PM - 3:15 PM; Uranium - Building N) Jon Winder, Director of Global IT Services, Plan International Introducing IT best practice (ITIL) can be simple and inexpensive for your organization. Benefits include: outages become opportunities; availability increases; cooperation and trust built across IT teams; improved business relationships and satisfaction; and much more. Join us to explore collaboration on implementation, build a network for sharing knowledge, and take the first steps to bringing best practice, order, and structure to your IT Operations.

C&I Session 1B: Demand Aggregation/Shared Connectivity & Infrastructure Breakout (3:30 PM - 4:15 PM; Conference Center - Building J) Joe Simmons, Global Program Director, Connectivity & Infrastructure, NetHope Join us for a discussion of demand aggregation and shared connectivity. We’ll address questions such as: how do we leverage demand aggregation and shared C&I in selected geographies? Can value be obtained by aggregating connectivity requirements? Are we staffed to locate, negotiate, and manage those relationships and optimize aggregation? Do connectivity aggregators really work for NGOs and is it a good opportunity for some of us to explore further? We’ll have members and providers on hand.

Open Data, Data Standards, and Why They Matter to You Breakout (3:30 PM - 4:15 PM; Jesse Owens - Building L) Dustin Homer, Business Development & Partnership Manager, Development Gateway Open Data for development gets attention, and the demand for open data will keep accelerating. Our session explores high-level principles of Open Data for development, and how they apply to NetHope members. We will talk about how data standards – particularly IATI – can help members structure project data, publicize data, and engage with potential partners and funders. We will have a group discussion on pros and cons of open data, focusing on the experience of members that already report to IATI.

Leading Innovation at an INGO: Challenges and Opportunities (2:15 PM - 3:00 PM; Locatelli Center, Santa Clara University) Joe Dougherty, Partner, Dalberg Global Development Advisors Ann Mei Chang, Chief Innovation Officer, Mercy Corps Awais Khan, Chief of Innovation and Social Ventures, Save the Children Foundation Erica Kochi, Co-founder, UNICEF Innovation Unit Innovation is a key driver of transformation, whether in the for-profit or non-profit sectors. Yet, the constraints and incentives of donor funding in the INGO space often push us in exactly the opposite direction. How do we introduce concepts of risk taking, experimentation, fast iteration, and lean approaches to catalyze innovation for international development?

Rapid Fire Innovation Presentations (3:00 PM - 5:30 PM; Locatelli Center, Santa Clara University) Internet.org Learnings from Zambia: Delivering Essential Services at Scale Bryan Hurren, Strategic Partnerships Manager, /Internet.org Beyond connectivity alone, the access to services that connectivity provides offers people economic empowerment, democratizes access to information, and accelerates health and education outcomes. Facebook’s recent launch of Internet.org Free Basic Services Program in Zambia is Facebook’s first and a global program to bring people access to these essential services.

The Disruptive Power of Voice Kevin Schuster, Director of Partnerships in , VOTO Mobile Traditional methods of engaging people living in the developing world are expensive, infrequent and inefficient. The result is they don’t have access to life-changing information, and their voices go unheard. Over 3 billion people are disconnected because of distance, literacy, language and infrastructure. Mobile phone penetration in is reaching 80% and climbing fast. Yet, an over-reliance on SMS and smartphone data is cutting off the vast majority of these mobile-phone users. We need to use the power of voice-based communication. Mobile engagement is not easy. In addition to sharing the benefits and use cases of our projects, we will share best practices for improving engagement.

Human Powered Tech for Livelihoods Radha Basu, CEO, iMerit Fireside chat with Radha Basu, CEO, iMerit; Luke Biewald, CEO, Crowdflower; Leila Chirayath Jana, CEO Samasource. Topics: Crowdsourcing, Machine Learning, Impact Sourcing Service Providers

3D Printing & Education Anh Bui, Director of Product Strategy and the DIAGRAM Center, Benetech New explorations of 3D printing in emerging markets can stem from a natural confluence of community engagement and technology innovation for social impact. Convening communities around innovation has allowed Benetech to integrate stakeholders that may not otherwise come together during the ideation and implementation process. By providing the scaffolding for powerful partnerships and new collaborations, new pathways for impact can be created. Using its 3D printing initiatives as a case study, learn more about how Benetech applies lessons from its cross-sector convening to create new opportunities for the some of the most vulnerable communities.

How New Technologies Are Changing Everything We Knew about Data Collection and Analysis Guillaume Kroll, Program Manager, Center for Effective Global Action, Berkeley University Demonstrating impact has become an important focus in international development. Yet, many organizations often use measurement methods that are poorly suited to the task. Traditional, self-reported data collection techniques such as paper surveys are prone to reporting bias and measurement errors, and tend to overestimate the impact of interventions. Fortunately, new technology tools – from ICT devices to environmental sensors or microsatellite imagery – offer unprecedented opportunities to collect and analyze data faster, cheaper, and with higher accuracy.

C&I Session 2B: Layer 7 Implementation Breakout (11:15 AM - 12:00 PM; Conference Center A - Building J) Joe Simmons, Global Program Director, Connectivity & Infrastructure, NetHope Layer 7 technologies can be a valuable tool in identifying and managing bandwidth usage by staff, but with it comes the vista of Big Brother. Beyond the technical capabilities, what are the ethical considerations of having visibility into the computing habits of staff? How do we gain business buy-in to be comfortable? How can we safeguard against abuse by IT departments? Join us as we discuss Layer 7 implementations with member organizations as well as technology providers.

Feeding the Programs and Starving the Core: Why Capacity Building Matters for Growth and Impact Breakout (11:15 AM - 12:00 PM; Conference Center B - Building J) Alison Powell, Philanthropy Knowledge Manager, Bridgespan Shazeen Virani, Manager, Bridgespan Seventy percent of NGO leaders surveyed by Bridgespan named “insufficient indirect cost recovery” from funders as one of their most pressing problems. When money comes with strings attached, funders are effectively thwarting the ability to create healthy organizations and effective platforms for scale. Playing by the funding rules, many NGOs have grown into global conglomerates managing, in some cases, hundreds of programs in dozens of countries. While outwardly successful, it’s a pattern of fragmented growth that feeds the programmatic branches and starves the operational core. Join The Bridgespan Group for a frank discussion about the role NGO leaders and funders play in this overhead starvation cycle; discuss ways to shift the conversation to impact per dollar and which investments are required to maximize measurable results and create platforms for scale.

Data Protection, Especially Beneficiary Data Breakout (11:15 AM - 12:00 PM; Jesse Owen - Building L) Michael Duggan, CIO, Trócaire Data Protection is a significant concern for our organizations at Board and Executive Level. Points to be addressed: - Overview of Data Protection Legislation (with a specific focus on new and more onerous European legislation, and legislation being introduced in program countries). - Challenges with Data Protection and Institutional Donor demands. - Challenges surrounding digital data collection and big data. - Should IT own data protection? - How can the sector address a major data leakage that impacts us all? - Should NetHope have a code of conduct on Data Protection as many sectorial fundraising groups do? The output of this workshop may be an agreement with interested agencies for a member driven initiative on Data Protection.

Back Office Day Workshop (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM; Conference Center - Building J) Kenneth Supersano, Senior Director of Technology, Save the Children Federation A true NetHope collaboration wouldn’t be complete without a discussion of the critical systems that we all use to run our back office. While not always the sexiest of topics, these systems occupy much of our time and time of the people we work with. They’re also necessary for the efficient functioning of our various organizations. The discussion will be wide ranging, but will be anchored by two member led discussions. AmeriCares will present their implementation of the Office365 Suite. They will take the opportunity to lay out why and how they made the decision to move to O365, what they’ve done so far, and what they are doing next. Plan will discuss their rollout of SAP and Success Factors across 50 countries in less than 18 months. By nature, Non Governmental Or- ganizations intervene in the less and least developed countries where communications are non-ex- isting. As part of their humanitarian mis- sions, they work in remote areas where they must be able to deploy first response, medical or any oth- er emergency aid. In this context, communications are a very critical issue. In any circumstances, they need to rely on reliable services to achieve their missions.

Using Geolink Satellite Services full range of satellite and land solutions for voice and data communications, even the most remote locations stay at the center of everything.
