Keshen From the earliest days of English-language Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television (CBC-TV), the military has been regularly featured on the news, public affairs, documentary, and drama programs. Little has been done to study these programs, despite calls for more research and many decades of work on the methods for the historical analysis of television. In addressing this gap, this thesis explores: how media representations of the military on CBC-TV (commemorative, history, public affairs and news programs) changed over time; what accounted for those changes; what they revealed about CBC-TV; and what they suggested about the way the military and its relationship with CBC-TV evolved. Through a material culture analysis of 245 programs/series about the Canadian military, veterans and defence issues that aired on CBC-TV over a 40-year period, beginning with its establishment in 1952, this thesis argues that the conditions surrounding each production were affected by a variety of factors, namely: (1) technology; (2) foreign broadcasters; (3) foreign sources of news; (4) the influence

    How the Canadian Media Memorialized the Fall of the Berlin Wall Karen Brglez, University of Winnipeg On November 9, 1999, television reporter, Peter Mansbridge announced to Canadians on national news that “in Berlin tonight they’re remembering a night no one could forget. The night ten years ago when an explosion of freedom levelled a wall. And changed the world.”1 The commemorations being celebrated marked the collapse of the Berlin Wall in the fall of 1989. The opening of the wall eliminated the central symbol of the Cold War period. The barrier had divided East and West Berlin for twenty-eight years, and its spontaneous opening triggered an upheaval that overturned the postwar order on the European continent. All within a single year the German states were unified, the Warsaw Pact collapsed, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was extended to the East.2 The free democratic world celebrated Western liberation from post- Stalinist oppression. In 1999 and 2009 the Canadian media extensively reported on the transnational event of the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Ten and twenty years after the German upheaval of November 9, 1989 the Canadian media commemorated the occasion through the transmission of television programs, interactive webpages, and newspaper articles. This case study will examine, why the Canadian media made the fall of the Berlin Wall such a highly visible media affair on the anniversaries. The cultural constructed productions reveal that the Canadian mass media created a public discourse that celebrated a western democratic victory over the Soviet communist political and economic system. The heroic tale indirectly applauded NATO’s successes on the European continent and commended the advancement of democratization.

It’s a real honour to be here in Regina and especially to give the Minifie lecture. James M. Minifie embodied the best of Canadian foreign journalism. He was an early integrator who filed for both radio and TV and I’m sure would have also filed for online had it existed. The story of my coming to give this lecture is a little bit like the job that we do, a little like doing foreign correspondence. Just like foreign correspondence, every obstacle that could possibly be thrown in my way happened! I felt like I was being tested – the way we are with every single story we file. Even the very last leg of this journey, coming from Toronto just a few hours ago, I barely made it out. It was wet snow and a huge lineup of planes being de- iced. I couldn’t believe we made it out. So, just like every story we file, the object, as painful as it can be, is to make deadline – no matter what. The idea is that an imperfect but accurate and complete story on the air is better than no story.

Minifie Memorial Lecture at the University of Regina on Monday, February 25. His topic will be "Journalism: it's not minding falling off an elephant." Born in Vienna, Schlesinger lived in Czechoslovakia before and after World War II. He came to Canada in 1950. Prior to his CBC appointment in 1966, he worked as a reporter for the Vancouver Province, the Toronto Star and the London bureau of United Press International, as well as news editor and assistant managing editor of the European edition of the New York Herald Tribune. Schlesinger was executive producer of The National and, later, head of CBC Television News. He has served as the CBC's Far East correspondent based in Hong Kong, the European correspondent based in Paris and, since 1979, the familiar television journalist and commentator reporting from Washington. The James M. Minifie Lecture was established at the University of Regina in 1980. Born in Saskatchewan, Minifie was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and went on to become one of Canada's most respected journalists. The fifth annual Minifie Lecture will be given at 7:30 p.m. Monday, February 25, in the Education Auditorium at the University of Regina. The lecture is open to the public and admission is free.
