Hans Reinerth T Hans Reinertht 13. Mai 1900- 13.

  • Instrumentalising the Past: the Germanic Myth in National Socialist Context
RJHI 1 (1) 2014 Instrumentalising the Past: The Germanic Myth in National Socialist Context Irina-Maria Manea * Abstract : In the search for an explanatory model for the present or even more, for a fundament for national identity, many old traditions were rediscovered and reutilized according to contemporary desires. In the case of Germany, a forever politically fragmented space, justifying unity was all the more important, especially beginning with the 19 th century when it had a real chance to establish itself as a state. Then, beyond nationalism and romanticism, at the dawn of the Third Reich, the myth of a unified, powerful, pure people with a tradition dating since time immemorial became almost a rule in an ideology that attempted to go back to the past and select those elements which could have ensured a historical basis for the regime. In this study, we will attempt to focus on two important aspects of this type of instrumentalisation. The focus of the discussion is mainly Tacitus’ Germania, a work which has been forever invoked in all sorts of contexts as a means to discover the ancient Germans and create a link to the modern ones, but in the same time the main beliefs in the realm of history and archaeology are underlined, so as to catch a better glimpse of how the regime has been instrumentalising and overinterpreting highly controversial facts. Keywords : Tacitus, Germania, myth, National Socialism, Germany, Kossinna, cultural-historical archaeology, ideology, totalitarianism, falsifying history During the twentieth century, Tacitus’ famous work Germania was massively instrumentalised by the Nazi regime, in order to strengthen nationalism and help Germany gain an aura of eternal glory.

  • Historiographical Approaches to Past Archaeological Research
Historiographical Approaches to Past Archaeological Research Gisela Eberhardt Fabian Link (eds.) BERLIN STUDIES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD has become increasingly diverse in recent years due to developments in the historiography of the sciences and the human- ities. A move away from hagiography and presentations of scientifi c processes as an inevitable progression has been requested in this context. Historians of archae- olo gy have begun to utilize approved and new histo- rio graphical concepts to trace how archaeological knowledge has been acquired as well as to refl ect on the historical conditions and contexts in which knowledge has been generated. This volume seeks to contribute to this trend. By linking theories and models with case studies from the nineteenth and twentieth century, the authors illuminate implications of communication on archaeological knowledge and scrutinize routines of early archaeological practices. The usefulness of di erent approaches such as narratological concepts or the concepts of habitus is thus considered. berlin studies of 32 the ancient world berlin studies of the ancient world · 32 edited by topoi excellence cluster Historiographical Approaches to Past Archaeological Research edited by Gisela Eberhardt Fabian Link Bibliographic information published by the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek The Deutsche Nationalbibliothek lists this publication in the Deutsche Nationalbibliographie; detailed bibliographic data are available in the Internet at http://dnb.d-nb.de. © 2015 Edition Topoi / Exzellenzcluster Topoi der Freien Universität Berlin und der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Typographic concept and cover design: Stephan Fiedler Printed and distributed by PRO BUSINESS digital printing Deutschland GmbH, Berlin ISBN 978-3-9816384-1-7 URN urn:nbn:de:kobv:11-100233492 First published 2015 The text of this publication is licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC 3.0 DE.

  • A Case-Study of the German Archaeologist Herbert Jankuhn (1905-1990)
Science and Service in the National Socialist State: A Case-Study of the German Archaeologist Herbert Jankuhn (1905-1990) by Monika Elisabeth Steinel UCL This thesis is submitted for examination for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) January 2009 DECLARATION I, Monika Elisabeth Steinel, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. January 2009 2 ABSTRACT The thesis investigates the relationship between archaeology, politics and ideology through a case-study of the prominent German archaeologist Herbert Jankuhn (1905- 1990). It addresses the following questions: what role do archaeological scholars assume in a totalitarian state’s organisational structures, and what may motivate them to do so? To what extent and how are archaeologists and their scientific work influenced by the political and ideological context in which they perform, and do they play a role in generating and/or perpetuating ideologies? The thesis investigates the nature and extent of Jankuhn's practical involvement in National Socialist hierarchical structures, and offers a thematically structured analysis of Jankuhn's archaeological writings that juxtaposes the work produced during and after the National Socialist period. It investigates selected components of Herbert Jankuhn's research interests and methodological approaches, examines his representations of Germanic/German pre- and protohistory and explores his adapting interpretations of the early medieval site of Haithabu in northern Germany. The dissertation demonstrates that a scholar’s adaptation to political and ideological circumstances is not necessarily straightforward or absolute. As a member of the Schutzstaffel, Jankuhn actively advanced National Socialist ideological preconceptions and military aims.

  • Discourse and Politics in German and Swedish Archaeology 1900-1950'
Kossinna, the Nol"dische Gedanke, and Swedish Archaeology Discourse and politics in German and Swedish archaeology 1900-1950' Per Cornell, Ulf Borelius, Dan Kresa & Thomas Backlund This article looks at the relation between Swedish and German archaeology in the first half of the 20'" century. In particular, the focus is on the question why Swedish prehistorians came to accept the archaeology of Gustaf Kossinna. Thc methodological inspiration principally comes from Carlo Ginzburg and his idea of clucs. The empirical material mainly consists of books and journals. Newspapers and archives have also been used, but to a much lesser cxtent. Gustaf Kossinna was the dominant archaeologist in Germany in the early 20'" ccntury. The Siedliuigsarchä ologie was to a large extent his creation, and he was instrumental in making a spatial tum in archaeology. Kossinna was part of the Nordische Gedanke movement. Thus, the Nordic/Germanic blood, earth, and soil were paramount to Kossinnian archaeology. It was so important that Kossinna thought only Europe, in particular the Nordic region, which to him included parts of Germany, should be subjectcd to archaeological investigations. At the tum of the 20'" ccntury, Swedish archaeology was dominated by Oscar Monte- lius and his chronological typology. In the 1910s, however, his position was challcngcd by proponents of a more spatially oriented archaeology. Among thc opponents werc two young archaeologists, Nils Åberg and Sune Lindquist, who both had participated in the archaeological seminar organiscd by Knut Stjerna. In different ways, Åberg and Lindquist used Kossinna's archaeology in thc struggle against the Montelian dominance. Pet Cotrnel/, lust föi.

The past as propaganda: totalitarian archaeology in Nazi Germany BETTINA ARNOLD* An important element to the future of archaeology in the ex-Communist countries of central Europe will be the freeing of archaeological ideas from the constraints of a particular set of social theories built into the fabric of the state, CIS Milisauskas noted in the last Ax’rJQLvTY (64: 283-5). • “More Important Than All Technical Features Would Appear to Us the 'Volkliche' Differences”. Gotthard Neumann And
Fabian Link “More Important than all Technical Features Would Appear to Us the volkliche Differences”.Gotthard Neumann and the völkisch Thought in German Prehistory, 1920s to 1960s Summary This paper examines the theoretical and methodological value of combining Begriffsgeschichte (conceptual history) with Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus and social field by focusing on definitions of the völkisch thought in German prehistory. The theoretical perspective in this paper is that concepts on the semantic level are interlinked with historical processes in the social space, or the scientific field in this example. On the one hand, it is evident that völkisch elements belonged intrinsically to prehistoric archaeology in its development as an autonomous discipline in the scientific field. On the other hand, racist and völkisch thoughts were a result of the heteronomization that was enforced during the Nazi regime, when pre- historic archaeologists tried to use the Nazis to establish their discipline in academia. Keywords: Habitus- and field-theory; Begriffsgeschichte; völkisch thought; prehistory; Nazi regime.

  • And Extending Through Assertions Based on Interviews with Archaeologists
(with an extraordinary over-reliance on a few sources) and extending through assertions based on interviews with archaeologists whose views do not come close to encapsulating the variety that tend not support he argument, Much More Than Stones and Bones can best be thought of a very partial history of Australian archaeology. It is, instead, a document explaining the status quo in heritage archaeology, having little or nothing of substance to say about the practice of the profession outside those bounds. Heidelberg: Synchron 2002. XIV + 674 pages. ISBN 3-935025-08-4. Within the complex field of “archaeology, politics and identity”, the case of Prehistoric archaeology in Germany during the National-Socialist dictatorship is surely of considerable importance. Research into this problematic field, however, evolved only very slowly in the past decades. The pioneering studies of Reinhard Bollmus on the “Amt Rosenberg” and Michael Kater on the “SS-Ahnenerbe” from the 1970s hardly had any successors at first (Bollmus 1970; Kater 1974). Since the late 1980s, more and more case studies on individual institutions and scholars were published, but without provoking a general debate, which would have been appropriate in consideration of the importance of the topic. This situation has changed significantly within the last 5 years. The conference on “Prähistorie und Nationalsozialismus” in November 1998 in Berlin, whose papers are now published in the volume on hand, marked a turning point in this respect.

19/7/2015 10 Bizarre Stories Of Nazi Archaeology - Listverse PREVIOUS WEIRD STUFF 10 Bizarre Stories Of Nazi Archaeology DAVID TORMSEN JULY 18, 2015 The National Socialists were obsessed with their bizarre racial theories and desperate to subvert the science of archaeology to support the notion of a pure race of ancient Aryan supermen. In the 1930s, the two main organizations devoted to Nazi pseudoarchaeology were the SS Ahnenerbe, dominated by Heinrich Himmler, and the Amt Rosenberg, an academic Nazi Party organization run by Alfred Rosenberg. They struggled for power, and the Ahnenerbe was eventually triumphant, but both organizations organized some loopy expeditions. We wrote recently about the bizarre expedition by the SS to Tibet to explore the history of the mythical Aryan race. Here are 10 more tales of archaeology gone badly wrong. Featured image credit: German Federal Archives Tiwanaku 10 Photo credit: Gestaltenohneverstand Photo via Wikipedia Photo credit: Pko http://listverse.com/2015/07/18/10-bizarre-stories-of-nazi-archaeology/ 1/26 19/7/2015 10 Bizarre Stories Of Nazi Archaeology - Listverse SS officer Edmund Kiss spent time in Bolivia in the 1920s, becoming friendly with Austrian adventurer and rubber maker Arthur Posnansky. Posnansky was involved with excavating the ancient city of Tiwanaku in the Altiplano region, characterized by its massive stone blacks and elaborate carvings, and he despised the local people. Also unwilling to believe that the ruins were built by the indigenous Aymara people, Kiss developed a wild theory that the city was actually built by wayward Nordic Atlanteans one million years ago; they subdued the local inhabitants before erecting the spectacular city.

THE EVOLUTION OF PREHISTORIC ARCHAEOLOGY UNDER THE THIRD REICH: AS SEEN IN THE EXPERIENCES AND WORK OF GERMAN ARCHAEOLOGISTS, NAZIS, AND THE AHNENERBE INSTITUTE By Laura Christensen Submitted to the Faculty of The Archaeological Studies Program Department of Sociology and Archaeology In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 2010 Copyright © 2010 by Laura Christensen All rights reserved ii THE EVOLUTION OF PREHISTORIC ARCHAEOLOGY UNDER THE THIRD REICH: AS SEEN IN THE EXPERIENCES AND WORK OF GERMAN ARCHAEOLOGISTS, NAZIS, AND THE AHNENERBE INSTITUTE. Laura Christensen, B.A. University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 2010 The discipline of prehistoric archaeology changed dramatically under the Third Reich. The Nazis manipulated data provided by archaeologists, anthropologists, ethnologists, linguists, and many more areas of study in order to promote the nationalistic ideology of the National Socialist Party. With this project, I not only wanted to examine in what ways this manipulation was done, but also the implications this exploitation had on the development of prehistoric archaeology itself. In order to accomplish this, I have focused my attentions on the scholars who worked under the conditions of the NS Party. Through these professionals, I saw a wide range of participation and acknowledgement of the conditions of their involvement. The Ahnenerbe Institute was also examined due to its heavy contribution in acquiring and distributing the widely falsified data to the public. This project will contribute in understanding further the affects this period in academic history, as well as world history, had on the prehistoric archaeology. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First, I would like to thank Michael Woods for encouraging me during the process of this project and especially for allowing me to use his computer when mine broke down three weeks before it was due.
