In the heart of Europe, the capital city has everything going for it: high-quality artists, numerous collectors, an international audience and great exhibition spaces. The combination of these various criteria is attracting a new wave of galleries, both national and international, which have come to set up in the capital. Thus, galleries, artists, private viewings, exhibitions and fairs are all contributing to the attractiveness and boundless vitality of the city and offering visitors the opportunity to share their passion for art. The WIELS Art Centre has also helped to put Brussels on the world map of contemporary art, while other art centres and private collections are also opening their doors. In the Belgian capital, contemporary art is alive and evolving in all its forms. It’s even spilling out onto the streets and walls of the city. Brussels also intends to fill a gap with the opening, scheduled for 2019, of a Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. This key occasion in Brussels life reminds the people of Brussels how proud they can be of belonging here and shows visitors the wonderful treasures and joie de vivre of our Region. « be.brussels » The new «be.brussels» brand, chosen by the Region for its communication purposes, emphasises the role of the federal capital of the Brussels Region by adding the «be» of Belgium, thus symbolising the coming- together, coexistence and ongoing cooperation of the three national communities throughout the region. But «be» also reminds us of the opening-up of Brussels onto Europe and the rest of the world. From summer 2014, this new brand will also become the Internet address of the Region. Therefore, the Web extension «.brussels» will, gradually, towards the middle of next year, replace «.be» for all the key regional players as well as for all those who, whether business enterprises or individuals, wish to associate their name with that of their region.

National Museums in Belgium Felicity Bodenstein Summary The problematic and laboriously constructed nature of the Belgian nation is, to a large extent, reflected in the structure and distribution of Belgium’s federal/national museums. The complexity and contradictory nature of the administrative organisation of the Belgian state led one of its leading contemporary artists to comment that ‘maybe the country itself is a work of art’ (Fabre, 1998: 403). Its national museums - those which receive direct federal funding - are the result of a series of projects that founded the large cultural institutions of Brussels in the nineteenth century, decreed by the Belgian monarchy that was itself only founded in 1830. Brussels, the largely French speaking capital of the nation situated geographically in the centre of a Flemish speaking region, is since 1830 the seat of a constitutional monarchy and democratically elected parliament that governs over the two very distinct linguistic and cultural areas: the northern Dutch-speaking Flanders and southern French-speaking Wallonia. In his article on ‘What, if Anything, Is a Belgian?’, Van der Craen writes : ‘Belgium has been at the centre of a heated debate since its creation. The relatively young country has had little time to develop any nationalistic feelings in comparison to, for instance, the Netherlands or France’ (2002 : 32).
