Policy priorities and/or reform opportunities in Estonia and Lithuania In Estonia and Lithuania increasing numbers of newly arrived migrants and returning nationals has emphasized the importance of an inclusive education system. Furthermore, long-living cultural minorities in both countries contribute to the diverse linguistic and cultural landscape in the region. This calls for policymakers and education institutions to take specific measures to facilitate the integration of children with a migrant background. The education systems in Estonia and Lithuania face several challenges related to migrant education. One of them is uneven school preparedness to address the needs of diverse learners and teachers lacking competences and skills to deal with diversity in the classroom. The latter aspect is of utmost importance as the success of migrant inclusion in education system in many ways relies on pedagogues and professional support staff in schools. Thus, a growing number of newly arrived immigrants and returnees highlights the importance of multicultural competence and language awareness to be introduced systematically in teacher education programmes. This has become an important policy priority in both Estonia and Lithuania, though the issue has been addressed inconsistently to date. Both Estonia and Lithuania have undergone various reforms in higher education and teacher training over the past years.

Despite his small size, he is the second most visited attraction in Brussels. But how many of us truly know the history and purpose of this little sculpture? Did you know that, in 2019, Manneken-Pis will already be 400 years old? Do you know when and why the original statue, created by Jérôme Duquesnoy in 1619, was replaced by a copy at the corner of rue de l’Étuve and rue du Chêne? And did you know that this Manneken-Pis, with his world- famous silhouette, wasn’t the very first Manneken-Pis? It is still an amazing phenomenon, the infatuation surrounding Manneken-Pis is multi-secular and over the years has taken many different forms. Brussels citizens quickly recognised themselves in this little chap and over time have made him the symbol of their own mischievous and irreverent personality. They considered him to be one of them and he was soon associated with public celebrations, at which it became the custom to dress the statue. He has also acted as the flag bearer of a certain wry humour, as well as being the spokesman for the city’s beleaguered inhabitants. For me as for every member of the Culture Department of the City of Brussels, this anniversary is an opportunity to highlight the surprising and eventful history of this fountain through a range of events aimed as much at young audiences as tourists.

    PRESS OUVERTURE KIT 04.02.2017 The Museums of the City of Brussels EDITORIAL In February 2017, Manneken-Pis, the most famous Brussels resident, will have his own museum. What could be more fitting for this little gentleman courted by the world? Folklore associations but also celebrities and even governments all want to give him a costume. Not to hide his youthful nudity, but instead, to smile at his unique rebellious and unifying attitude. As for the little lad, he is truly a Brussels resident taking on a new identity with each new costume. And he has over 950 of them! He is indeed the image of this city - multicultural, proud and a tiny bit rebellious. Some of his costumes are currently on display in a small room at the Maison du Roi. Alongside the teams at the Museums of the City of Brussels, I was committed to giving this collection a more dignified setting. Moving his wardrobe to Rue du Chêne, a stone’s throw from the fountain, is part of a broader perspective to accentuate and show more of the City of Brussels’ collections. After the reopening of the Sewer Museum in 2015, the launch of this new museum is the second phase in this major redeployment. The original statue is still kept at the Museum of the City of Brussels. At the same time as the opening of GardeRobe MannekenPis, the Manneken-Pis room at the Maison du Roi has been entirely redesigned around the statue’s history, which is intimately linked to the history of Brussels itself.
