While many helpful resources on teaching a particular genre or teaching particular texts within a genre exist, college teachers who have not previously taught science fiction, fantasy, or horror will benefit from a broader pedagogical overview of speculative fiction, and that is what this resource provides. Teachers who have previously taught speculative fiction may also benefit from the selection of alternative texts presented here. This resource includes an argument for the consideration of more speculative fiction in college English classes, whether in composition, literature, or creative writing, as well as overviews of the main theoretical discussions and definitions of each genre.

So in addition to that, they've tamed monsters like grolm: bear-sized, three-eyed beasts with grayish green, lizard-like, impossible to penetrate with things like swords or arrows, hide, and sharp, hooked beak-like mouths to the point of riding them like horses. But so far, all is well. Trollocs are still terrible. It showed some potential, especially toward the ending, but I expected much more from it. Oh man. The first 5 or 6 books are a must read for any fantasy fans; even if you do not like it you have to see what all the fuss about the series is about. In this series companion book, over fourscore full color paintings include stunning new maps of the world, portraits of the central characters, landscapes, objects of Power, and national flags. The main protagonist, Rand, accelerated a lot in this book compared to book one. Which is kind of impressive if you think about it: a hunt for a brass instrument vs. So I'm done. I can't believe I made it as far as I did because this book is everything I hate about the fantasy genre concentrated into a miasma of generic fuckery.

Enlarge cover. As others have stated, I agree reading between books four and five makes sense. The warning is not because the books are bad. I compared it to the longer, novel sized version that was later released, and I thought the extra padding took away from the story and made it somewhat bloated and boring. If you love the fantasy genre, this is the season for you! Then, whenever you reread the series if you can be bothered read it before Eye. Since the mystery concerning these characters and the reasons for their quest to find the Dragon Reborn helped make the first three or four volumes more interesting, I recommend a new reader read at least the first three volumes before reading this book. The dead are walking, men die impossible deaths, and it seems as though reality itself has become unstable: All are signs of the imminence of Tarmon Gai'don, the Last Battle, when Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, must confront the Dark One as humanity's only hope. “Daemonic” Forces: Trauma and Intertextuality in Fantasy Literature
“DAEMONIC” FORCES: TRAUMA AND INTERTEXTUALITY IN FANTASY LITERATURE by BRANDY BALL BLAKE (Under the Direction of Hugh Ruppersburg) ABSTRACT While the number of critical studies of fantasy has been growing since the 1970s, few critics have focused on the interplay between works of fantasy and trauma, its symptoms, and its theories. In this dissertation, I examine the appearance of trauma in numerous works of the genre, showing the prevalence of traumatic experiences and neuroses and illustrating fantasy’s ability to focus on and significantly address serious real-world issues, including violence, death, and other traumatic events. More specifically, the essays included in this dissertation explore the ways in which the presence of trauma in fantasy stories utilizes, comments upon, and enhances the traditions and conventions of the fantasy genre, which because of the connection between fantasy and psychoanalysis often have a psychological subtext. Focusing on a range of work in trauma theory from Freud and Jung to Cathy Caruth, Donald Kalsched, and Anne Whitehead, I demonstrate that trauma in fantasy stories uses intertextuality, in the sense of both extensive allusions to previous works and the repetition of formal genre conventions, to illustrate the daemonic nature of trauma, particularly the fixation of the hero on a traumatic event and the feelings of helplessness and compulsion that he experiences as he proceeds towards his heroic destiny. In fantasy characters from works such as The Lord of the Rings, the Harry Potter series, C. S. Lewis’s Til We Have Faces, and Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, this fixation manifests through the repetition of fantasy traditions—such as the ongoing battle between good and evil, the compulsion of the hero to save others, the recurrence of functional characterization, and the representation of the journey archetype—that mirror the symptoms of trauma.

During this time, it has taken all the effort we have had simply to keep up with getting things done. We have continued to hold our annual Administrative Meeting and annually and in a timely fashion released those notes for discussion with membership. We’ve vastly improved our use of Site Announcements and have moved toward more active moderation and use of other communication technologies such as Twitter, Facebook, and RSS feeds. Our Tar Valon Times newsletter has had some rough periods in regards to publication, but seems to have finally hit a fantastic stride. However, our last published annual report was in 2006. Despite having what I feel are numerous ways to communicate with our members, the Annual Report does serve a unique function: it is a single document with the purpose of informing members how we are moving as an overall organization. It has also become a mammoth undertaking. What was easy enough to put out in a month when we were much smaller now takes many months and the efforts of many, many people.

Stefan Ekman Göteborg University Sweden Satan, Sauron, and Sundry Dark Lords: Evil Incarnate in Fantasy Fantasy, especially epic fantasy, deals with ultimate evil. The very goal of the epic quest is often to thwart the machinations of the Dark Lord, of evil incarnate, in order to prevent him from becoming ruler of the entire world. These Dark Lords, be they called Sauron, Lord Foul, or simply the Dark One, have a large number of features in common. Their strategies to achieve world domination are similar, as are the ways in which they, their servants, and their domains are portrayed. It seems that many writers of mainstream fantasy have been inspired by an original Dark Lord. Brian Attebery suggests that The Lord of the Rings is the centre from which the fuzzy set of fantasy radiates (13-14). Authors who want to place themselves firmly in the centre of the fantasy genre therefore make use of Tolkien’s ideas in constructing their own fantasies. In this paper, I will discuss Satan as the source of many of the Tolkienian Dark Lord’s main traits, and proceed to demonstrate how Tolkien’s Dark Lord has become a powerful model which later authors of high fantasy have used and re-used. I will begin by discussing what similarities and differences there are between, on the one hand, Melkor and Sauron, and, on the other, the most prominent Lord of Evil in the Christian tradition. In The Mythologies of Tolkien’s Middle-earth, Ruth Noel compares Sauron to a number of “dark and baleful gods: Pluto, Balar, and, primarily, Odin” (96) but only mentions, in passing, that Sauron is similar to the orthodox Satan in being incapable of material creation (97).
