Seeing the profound impact the Covid-19 crisis was YOU having on our health service, we wanted to approach the current global situation in a forward-thinking and proactive way. NHS staff and volunteers were and are doing amazing work in caring for Covid-19 patients and we here at ROL Cruise wanted to do our bit to show support too. In July of this year, we were delighted to announce that we had raised over £100,000 for the NHS Charities National campaign to show our support and appreciation to the NHS. Five months on, we wanted to see how the donation has helped our amazing NHS. Here we spoke to Susannah Howard, ICS Programme Director for Suffolk & North East Essex ICS…

With such a significant donation, we have great ambition to benefit a broad spectrum of health and care staff and so the main starting point we have taken is to engage with our staff across the Alliance and consider where they feel the funds will make the biggest impact.

We have been asking our people about what the pandemic has meant to them over the last few months and to see what changes could be made to support them further. Overwhelmingly, the predominant response has been focused not just on the impact the pandemic has had on them personally but on their families. Staff would appreciate support with things like child care and days out, so that they are able to spend quality time with their families and enjoy special time together whenever possible. This is one proposal that is currently being reviewed at present.

Another interesting area is related to the redesign of staff rooms. Most of these areas are currently restricted due to measures we’ve had to put in place to prevent the spread of infection between staff. However having a refuge or somewhere staff can go during their working day, or a place that enables staff to connect with one another is really important.

Mental health and mindfulness is also an important area. As we go into the winter, we’re very mindful that we will face additional pressures this year. The Alliance is therefore currently working with Mind to develop some mental health, mindfulness and wellness packs to go to staff’s homes, using funds from ROL Cruise’s generous donation.

I think what is phenomenal is that staff have adapted so quickly to the many new demands on them; supporting patients or residents in care homes who are unable to see their families as much as they’d like to, wearing PPE every day, using online methods to communicate with patients. I would like to pay a huge tribute to everyone working in our local health and care system for their resilience and everything they continue to do. The donation from ROL Cruise will help so many people across our organisations – and in so many different ways. We remain ever grateful toROL for their fantastic support.
