A Child in a Japanese POW Tuesday, August 25 Marjolijn de Jager Auditorium Camp WWII at 1:30p.m. Join Marjolijn as she provides an insiders look at life as a child in a Japanese POW Camp. There will be discussions followed by the documentary, Song of Survival . Anatomy of a Car: What's Wednesday, June 24 Ivan Santiago Health Center Parking Lot Under The Hood at 2p.m. Join experienced driver and car enthusiast Ivan for an insiders look at cars. Learn about what goes into making and maintaining a car. Aqua Zumba Cindy McGuire Mondays, 10:30a.m. Fitness Center Zumba is one of the hottest fitness trends...and we're taking these dance moves to the pool! This class integrates the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness. Join us for splashing, stretching, twisting, and even shouting and laughing. Sign up in the fitness center. For $30 you will be registered for 10 classes. *Must be Fitness Center Member to participate. Art Therapy Clare Chapman 12 & 20, Jul. 11 & 26, Gardens Aug. 8 & 30 at 2p.m. Monthly art therapy sessions will explore painting with watercolors, a process that can stimulate thoughts, unlock memories, and promote social interaction. Artists will have complete control over their images, with their finished pieces culminating in a gallery show Thursday, July 9 at Away for the Day Jill Meyers Auditorium 3p.m. Courses FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Wednesday, August Balance Training Sue Kennedy Fitness Center 19 at 11a.m. Balance represents a double edge sword. When afraid of falling and unsure of balance we often limit movement patterns and actually become more likely to fall. So, while balance training should be part of our exercise program, proper instruction, progression and form are key to building strength, balance and confidence. -Become familiar with balance tools available in our fitness center. -Learn how to exercise with proper form using the balance tools. This program is limited to 10 participants please sign up in the Fitness Center Thursday, June 11 at Balcony Gardening 101 Mary Dana Auditorium 2:30p.m. Learn about plants that are easy to care for and add a nice colorful touch to your patio garden. Horticulturalist, Mary Dana, will share tips and tricks to keep your garden thriving all summer long with continuous pops of color and minimal effort. Friday, July 3 at Beer Making 101 Carol Cortina Springs Lounge 2p.m. Join Carol as she demonstrates how to brew malt beer at home. The process is easier than you may think. The hardest part will be waiting 7 days for your brew to carbonate before it's ready to taste. 1st & 3rd Thursdays Bible Talk Rev. David Rowe of the Month, Interfaith Chapel 3:30 p.m. Join Reverend David Rowe for these interactive, spiritual discussions where we review Biblical stories and discuss how they relate to our lives today. Wednesday, May 20 Bridgeport History Richard Sattanni Auditorium at 3:45pm Treasured Memories with Richard Sattanni is a presentation that will bring you back to a time in our history when Bridgeport was booming. Pleasure Beach Ballroom, factories manufacturing products that were sent all over the world, our Downtown was a happening place. Journey on back with Richard and relive the times of the past. Canning Jams and Monday, May 5 at Dotti Schroeder 10 Floor Lounge Preserves 10a.m. Join Dotti as she shares tips and tricks to creating delectable jams and preserves you and your loved ones can enjoy. Tuesdays and Cardiac Rehab Phase III Sue Kennedy Thursdays Fitness Center 12:30-1:30 p.m. Phase III is a cardiac rehab program committed to teaching a lifetime of fitness, educational programs and promote habits to ensure a satisfying, healthy lifestyle. This maintenance program is designed for those who have recently completed Phase II Cardiac Rehab in addition to those with known risk factors, for those with existing heart problems, or for those simply wishing to improve their level of cardiovascular fitness. It is a supervised exercise program whereby individuals learn to self-manage their overall cardiovascular health. There is a nominal fee for this program. *Contact the Fitness Director, Cindy, at ext. 6108 for further information. “Charades” Marlane Argianas Mondays at 2p.m. Inn Lounge A fun way to “Act It Out!”. As a group we will try to guess who a person is, the titles of movies and books and common everyday phrases. All of this is done without any talking and only using our body to give the messages to others. This is a fun and creative way to spend the morning. Courses FACULTY DAY AND TIME LOCATION Thursday, May 14, Comparative Religion Rabbi Suri Krieger Jun. 18, Jul. 16 and Auditorium Through Art and Music Aug. 20 at 3:45p.m. The Great Religions of the World- Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism each have their unique rituals, practices and concepts. While they are different, all of these faiths share the common goal of helping us find meaning in our lives. Often the meaning of religion is illustrated potently and poignantly through its art and music. This course will look at religion through the lens of its art and music. Consumer Scam Senior Medicare Patrol Friday, June 12 at Auditorium Prevention (SMP) 2:30p.m. The Area Agency on Aging of South Central CT’s Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program in partnership with Connecticut Legal Service, Inc. will present a free informational session on “Identifying and Preventing Consumer Scams”. Older adults are frequent targets of scams. Consumer scams are a common vehicle used against Medicare beneficiaries to obtain Medicare numbers and Social Security number, both of which can enable scam artists and criminals to commit health care fraud. The presentation will describe common scams, acknowledge the potential for fraud and abuse and give tips on what consumers should watch for to avoid becoming victims. It will also provide resources dedicated to consumer protection and reporting suspected fraud.
