National Park Service Teaching with Historic Places U.S. Department of the Interior Gold Fever! Seattle Outfits the Klondike Gold Rush Gold Fever! Seattle Outfits the Klondike Gold Rush (Special Collections, University of Washington Libraries, Curtis Photo, Neg. 26368) Seattle's Pioneer Square bustled with excitement as news of a major gold strike in Canada's Yukon River valley reached the port city during the summer of 1897. Soon eager prospectors from all over the country descended on Seattle to purchase supplies and secure transportation to the far-away gold fields. Newcomers were beset with information from every corner. Hawkers offered one sales pitch after another, explaining where to find lodging, meals, gambling, and other entertainment. Outfitters tried to entice prospectors into their stores to purchase the supplies necessary for the stampede north. Anticipating large crowds, these outfitters piled merchandise everywhere, including the sidewalks in front of their stores. One clever merchant opened a mining school where greenhorns could learn the techniques of panning, sluicing, and rocking before setting out for the gold fields. Some anxious stampeders headed directly for the piers where ships were ready to sail north, joining the great migration to the Klondike gold fields. The intense bustle and commotion of the Klondike Gold Rush dramatically changed the face of Seattle. National Park Service Teaching with Historic Places U.S. Department of the Interior Gold Fever! United ,States Government Printing Office, Denver. Keywords 1) Historical arctieology; 2) archeological excavations; 3) hi.storic artifacts; 4) Southeast Alaska. • ii ABSTRACT Archeological investigations at both the present and original locations of the William Moore Cabin (1888-1900) offered an unusual opportunity to study the construction and use of an early twentieth century Alaskan frontier cabin as it changed through both time and space. In addition to the traditional archeological excavations of stratified soil deposits, data were recovered from the attic of the Moore Cabin. These assisted in the interpretation of remains on the original cabin site. Approximately 4000 artifacts were found in stratified sheet trash deposits, including items associated with the original settlers of Skagway. Their analysis provided not only details about the lives and incidents of the Moores and their successors, the Kirmses, and the structures in which they lived, but also provided insight into human behavior on America's most recent frontier. In the Moore Cabin attic, remains of clothing used as chinking material provided a glimpse of the frugal life of Skagway's pioneers. The spatial distribution of nails and roofing fragments suggested that the east roof was covered with split shakes and the west half by sawn shingles.

district of DISTRICT OF COLDSTREAM (EcibBtrcam MEMORANDUM TO Mayor and Council FILE NO. 0430 FROM Michael Stamhuis, P.Eng. DATE January 16, 2009 Director of Engineering Services SUBJECT High Priority Infrastructure Projects 1. Purpose To advise Council of list of infrastructure projects forwarded to local Member of Parliament. 2. Origin Council query. 3. Background In early December we were asked to forward a list of high priority projects to the local office of Colin Mayes, M.P. This list is attached. Following this, Council received two further pieces of correspondence being the attached Federation of Canadian Municipalities Member's Advisory re infrastructure projects and an expression of interest from Colin Mayes, M.P. to meet with Council. 4. Discussion The attached list of infrastructure projects could serve as a basis for any meeting with Mr. Mayes. It should be noted that the list was developed on very short notice at the time of request and may not be reflective of Council's priorities at this time. In addition, there appears to be some indication that the Federal Government will be looking for "shelf-ready" projects. The attached list has projects that are in various stages of shelf-readiness. We anticipate that the Federal Government Budget announcement will contain a reference to an infrastructure program. We will have to await the criteria that would ultimately be included in the program documents. Once this documentation is received, we recommend a Council review to determine which project(s) would best fit both the funding criteria and our own priorities. If a meeting is set up with our Member of Parliament once the program particulars are known, any project funding application could be a key discussion topic.
