Five Times Daily: The Dynamics of Prayer Worship Among Muslim Immigrants in St. John's, NL By Scott Royle A thesis submitted to the Department of Religious Studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland in partial fulfillment for the degree of Masters of Arts in Religious Studies March 2016 Abstract This thesis explores the ritual of prayer among Muslim immigrants in the city of St. John's, NL. Immigration across national, cultural, religious, and ethnic borders is a moment in an individual's life marked by significant change. My premise is that in such contexts the relatively conservative nature of religious ritual can supply much-needed continuity, comfort, and consolation for individuals living- through the immigrant experience. As well, ritual forms are often put under stress when transferred to a considerably different place and cultural context, where “facts on the ground” may be obstacles to traditional and familiar ritual forms. Changes to the understanding or practice of ritual are common in new cultural and geographic situations, and ritual itself often becomes not merely a means of social identification and cohesion, but a practical tool in processing change - in the context of immigration, in learning to live in a new community. St. John's is a lively and historic city and while Muslim immigrants may be a small group within it they nevertheless contribute to the city's energy and atmosphere. This thesis endeavours to better understand the life stories of ten of these newcomers to St. John's, focusing on their religious backgrounds and lives. In particular, this thesis seeks to better understand the place of prayer in the immigrant experience. -

For additional information about this book https://muse.jhu.edu/book/9397 No institutional affiliation (2 Feb 2019 09:46 GMT) Introduction Old Spirits in New Bottles Bottle Trees and Cell Phones Bright wind chimes composed of enticing, candy-colored, pastel bits of glass are for sale at the Winchester Mystery House gift shop (fi gure 1). Some of the glass is formed into colorful bottles reminiscent of those in the southern supernatural tradition of bottle trees, a custom depicted in movies such as Ray (2004), a biopic about African American musician Ray Charles, or Because of Winn-Dixie (2005), a children’s fi lm about a beloved dog. The famous southern writer Eudora Welty photographed them. A contemporary southern author, Dennis Covington, describes them: “If you happen to have evil spirits, you put bottles on the branches of a [bare] tree in your yard. The more colorful the glass, the better, I suppose. The evil spirits get trapped in the bottles and won’t do you any harm. This is what Southerners in the country do with evil spirits” (1995, xv). Bottle trees are a product of southern African American cul- ture. Jim Martin says that glassblowing and bottle making existed as early as the ninth century in Africa. The practice of hanging objects from trees to ward off evil spirits is also African, and the bottle tree itself is Kongo-derived. -

An urban legend, popular legend, urban myth, ur- The term “urban legend,” as used by folklorists, has ap- peared in print since at least 1968.[3] Jan Harold Brun- vand, professor of English at the University of Utah, in- troduced the term to the general public in a series of popular books published beginning in 1981. Brunvand used his collection of legends, The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends & Their Meanings (1981) to make two points: first, that legends and folklore do not occur exclusively in so-called primitive or traditional so- cieties, and second, that one could learn much about ur- ban and modern culture by studying such tales. Many urban legends are framed as complete stories with plot and characters. Volume 63 Issue 1 Spring 2018 By David Blacker From the Director Executive Director, DVNHA Being that this is our “Accountability” issue, I thought I should bring you up to date on DVNHA’s biggest project supporting the recovery of Scotty’s Castle. I am happy to report that there is light at the end of the tunnel. We are at the end of the “planning and compliance” stage of the recovery, and this fall construction will begin on the new water, electrical, and sewer projects needed to reopen this historic district! That’s not the only good news; DVNHA has just passed $100,000 in funds raised for Scotty’s Castle restorations since the flood took place in October of 2015! This means that besides the projects that have already been finished, the entire restoration of the Scotty’s Castle Welte-Mignon Theatre Organ can be fully funded out of your generous contributions as well as the proceeds from our walking tour ticket sales! So here is an updated list of projects and services that have been provided for Scotty’s Castle so far: • Conservation treatment of Scotty’s Castle Silver Collection, $7,500 • Curatorial interns to assist with packing and moving of collection after flood, $4,800 • Conservation & repair of the Upper Music Room lace curtain, $19,369 • Repairs and restoration of the Upper Music Room’s Historic Theatre Pipe Organ, $57,800 Total Funded • New playback system for the Historic Theatre Organ, $12,000 Projects: $101,468 We have the following projects that we are still raising money for: • Conservation and repairs to Dining Room curtains, $23,000 Current Unfunded • Conservation and repairs to Lower Music Room curtains, $14,000 Projects: $59,200 • Conservation and repairs to 8 panels of Crewel work curtains, $22,200 Although we have some other funding sources, the majority comes from you, our generous supporters! DVNHA gathers the money together, but it is all of you who are making sure that when Scotty’s Castle does reopen in 2020, it will be to the sound of music, and in better shape than it was before the flood.
