The building fulfilled the expectation dıat a legitimate ruler would supp ort re ligion, publicly declare dıe nature and orthodoxy of his faith, and promote his daim to authority. The new mosque was the central building of a broad pro gramme that included new public facilities and spaces that both rhetorically and practically demonstrated the role ot tivil institutions in producing wealdı and benefits for all. As the nucleus of a new state, it generated legitimacy, prestige, and stability. -

1 MARDİN FROM TALES TO LEGENDS 2 künye 3 MARDİN FROM TALES TO LEGENDS 4 Introduction Mesopotamia is among those few names in the world that almost everyone is familiar with. Think of a region that is the birthplace of many tools, philosophies, systems and religions. Think of a region that so much that it pioneered has been adopted throughout the world and has played such an important role in shaping everyday lives. Imagine a place which witnessed so much for the first time: first writing system, first state, first city, first water irrigation sysems, first law and many more. Mardin situated right at the centre of this incredibly rich region can therefore be seen as a fortunate city, blessed in history. It has Anatolia on one side and Mesopotamia on the other, an ancient region which transported so many innovations that had originated in the Middle East to the western world. Despite the common assumption, the word Mesopotamia is not of Middle Eastern origin. It comes from the ancient Greek root words mesos (middle) and potamia (rivers) literally meaning “(land) between rivers.” It is curious that although writing was introduced in the region almost 3000 years earlier than in Greece, the region’s name is of Greek origin rather than a Middle Eastern language. In Syriac, Mesopotamia is called Beth Nahrin. Composed of the words beth (house, land) and nahrin (two rivers), it literally means “the land of/between two rivers.” Based on this, it can be deduced that the region was named not by the Greek civilizations of the west but by the people of the region themselves. -

One of the important components in the protection of cultural heritage is awareness. In this study, it is aimed to determine the perception and awareness of the students taking geography undergraduate education towards the universal cultural heritage values and assets of Turkey. For this reason, case studies have been conducted. The study, a quantitative researches, was fictionalized in a survey design and conducted with 204 students. The data were collected using a form of 35 open-and closed-ended questions developed by the researcher that determine the awareness of Turkey's cultural assets and values. In general, the perception and awareness of our cultural heritage values and assets, which are tangible and non-tangible, were found to be moderate. In line with the findings, it is proposed to plan detailed studies on raising the cultural heritage awareness levels of the students, to place more emphasis on the subject in the courses, and to organize curriculum programs for this area. -
The Glazed Tile Techniques of the Seljuk and Beylik Periods
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, ISSN 2159-5836 January 2013, Vol. 3, No. 1, 42-51 D DAVID PUBLISHING The Glazed Tile Techniques of the Seljuk and Beylik Periods İsmail Yardımcı Usak University, Usak, Turkey The word “tile” originates from Persian and means “China” or “Chinese work”. In the Ottoman language, the word “tile” also means “Chinese work”, or “belonging to China”. The art of Turkish tiles occupies a place of prominence in the history of Islamic art. Its roots can be traced at least as far back as the Uygurs of the eighth and ninth centuries. Its subsequent development was influenced by the Karakhanids, the Ghaznavids, and (especially) Iranian Seljuk art. With the Seljuks’ victory over the Byzantines at Malazgirt in 1071, the art followed them into Anatolia and embarked upon a new period of strong development fostered by the Anatolian Seljuk sultanate. The first major development in the art of tile-making occurred primarily in Anatolian Seljuk architecture. Various techniques have been used in the art of tiles which gave hundreds of samples for centuries. This study explores the glazed tile techniques used in the production of the Seljuk and Beylik periods. Keywords: Seljuk and Beylik periods, glazed tile, glazed brick, tile decoration, glazed tile techniques Introduction The Great Seljuks made variations in glazed tile techniques, and the Seljuks of Anatolia made original developments in that art. Until the 18th century, Turkish ceramic art and its products were called “evani”, meaning pottery, and “kâşi”, a word of Persian origin, meaning “of Kâşan”, the city that became the center for ceramics during the period of Great Seljuks. -

Prof. Dr. Tahire Erman July 2019 This thesis studies a municipally orchestrated modernization project in the city of Eskişehir, Turkey, in parallel to neoliberal urban trends. Showing the post-industrial characteristics of a neoliberal urban scene, Eskişehir’s neoliberal city branding entails a specific discourse that is formed around the promotion of modernist/westernist values. Therefore, the theoretical assumption of this study is the contextual variability of neoliberal urban practices. As one of the most tangible aspects of this new urban fabric, municipally produced statues are selected as the research material of this study. In this respect, the research question is, how can municipally subsidized, produced and placed statues in Eskişehir urban center be interpreted in a neoliberal urban setting?”. Therefore, the statues are studied with an interpretive approach and textual analysis is employed as the method.
