Arnaud crafts pure and ethereal wines, definitive new paradigms of their respective vineyards. He follows organic principles and everything here is done by hand with utmost care. Vinification is gentle and unforced and new oak is kept at a minimum. But it is Arnaud’s sensitive touch that makes all the difference. The wines are full of vitality, articulate but never brazen, and highly drinkable. Balance and elegance are paramount, as are aromatic expressiveness and seductive textures. (see page 5) Newly added – 2017 vintage: § Bourgogne “Herbeaux” § Bourgogne “Champ Perrier” § Meursault § Meursault “Grands Charrons” § Meursault “Les Cases-Têtes” § Meursault 1er Cru “Le Poruzot Dessus” § Meursault 1er Cru “Les Charmes Dessus” § Meursault 1er Cru “Les Genevrières” Jean Tardy Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy The Tardy family was originally a long-time, trusted grower that farmed vines for the Méo-Camuzet family who, as part of a sharecropping agreement, also offered them a number of their famous vineyards. Fast forward to two generations later, the meticulous and gentle Guillaume Tardy has now taken charge of his family domaine. With just over five hectares of vineyards, this small gem of an operation makes tiny quantities of wine. Its portfolio may be made up of mostly villages wines, but they are invariably single lieu-dit cuvées which, under Guillaume’s perfectionist rigour, become elevated expressions: opulent and elegant, (see page 12) replete with intense fruit flavour. The escalation of quality since Guillaume took over has been phenomenal. A secret no more, this domaine is now one that the smartest of the Burgundy cognoscenti actively seek. Newly added – 2017 vintage: § Bourgogne-Hautes Côtes de Nuits “Cuvée Maëlie” § Fixin “La Place” § Nuits-Saint-Georges “Au Bas de Combe” V. V. § Gevrey-Chambertin “Champerrier” V. Grand Cru Bass Phillip Leongatha, Australia Phillip Jones is an icon and a legend. Period. Bass Phillip was established in the late 1970s and within a few years his Pinot Noirs had become some of the most coveted wines in Australia. Biodynamic viticulture is the rule here and vinification involves as little intervention as possible. Each cuvée comes from consistent vineyard plots in every vintage, as Jones is a stickler for preserving unique terroir expression. The wines of Bass Phillip are endowed with vibrant fruit and considerable delicacy, and evolve and develop dramatically with aeration in a swirling glass or decent decanting. They have such a lofty reputation not only because of (see page 16) their deliciousness and soulfulness, but also because of their seemingly endless ageability: they don’t just age; they blossom gracefully to become so much more complex after 10, 15 or even 20 years in the bottle. Both the whites and the reds are eerily Burgundian and dangerously hard to place in a blind tasting. As we said: Legend.
