BOLDEN imagines the compelling, powerful, and tragic journey of Buddy Bolden, the unsung American hero who invented Jazz. With little biographical information and no found recordings of his music, the film’s narrative is comprised of fragmented memories of his past, against the political and social context in which his revolutionary music was conceived. The birth of jazz was the birth of American popular culture influencing everything that followed in its wake - from Louis Armstrong to Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Fugees and Dr. Dre, Bolden is where it all began. Starring Gary Carr as Bolden, and with original music written, arranged and performed by Wynton Marsalis, BOLDEN invites you to experience the world of New Orleans in the early 1900s - a world fueled by passion, greed and musical genius. The film co-stars Erik LaRay Harvey, Yaya DaCosta, Ian McShane and Michael Rooker. BOLDEN will be released theatrically in the US on May 3rd, 2019. A reception will follow at the SFJAZZ Center. Love, Oh Love, Oh Careless Love Careless Love is perhaps the most enduring of traditional folk songs. Of obscure origins, the song’s message is that “careless love” could care less who it hurts in the process. Although the lyrics have changed from version to version, the words usually speak of the pain and heartbreak brought on by love that can take one totally by surprise. And then things go terribly wrong. In many instances, the song’s narrator threatens to kill his or her errant lover. “Love is messy like a po-boy – leaving you drippin’ in debris.” Now, this concept of love is not the sentiment of this author, but, for some, love does not always go right. Countless artists have recorded Careless Love. Rare photo of “Buddy” Bolden Lonnie Johnson New Orleans cornetist and early jazz icon Charles Joseph “Buddy” Bolden played this song and made it one of the best known pieces in his band’s repertory in the early 1900s, and it has remained both a jazz standard and blues standard. In fact, it’s a folk, blues, country and jazz song all rolled into one. Bessie Smith, the Empress of the Blues, cut an extraordinary recording of the song in 1925. Lonnie Johnson of New Orleans recorded it in 1928. It is Pete Seeger’s favorite folk song. Careless Love has been recorded by Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. PAULY For over forty years, Louis Prima had survived one change after another in the pop~ ular music business. He was, in succession, a trumpet section player in his home~ town ofNew Orleans, the front man for a popular New York City jazz quintet, and the leader of a touring big band. In the 1950s, with his career flagging, he reinvent~ ed himself as a spectacular Las Vegas lounge act, then nudged his career through the 1960s with help from his old friend, Walt Disney. He explored many forms of popular music along the way, but aspired only, in his own words, to "play pretty for the people." The same man who wrote the jazz classic "Sing, Sing, Sing," would also record easy listening instrumental music, Disney movie soundtracks, and ltalian~American novelty songs. In all these reincamations, he performed with an exuberance that inspired his Vegas nickname, "the wildest." Prima's career would end in deafening silence, however. He spent the last thirty~five months of his life in a coma, following a 197 5 operation in which doctors partially removed a benign tumor from his brain stem.

The Blues Crusade
Jazzin' it up with the Blues Crusade Dr. John H. Duke founded the Middle Tennessee State University Jazz Ensemble in 1974. In the fall of 1979 they added the name "Blues Crusade." Under the creative direction of Duke, the group performs the best of big-band jazz literature. The arrange- ments they perform are from the libraries of Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich and the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. The Blues Crusade also performs original compositions and ar- rangements composed by the band members. Over the years artists such as Kai Winding, Jamey Aeber- sold, Don Shelffield, Beegie Adair, George Roberts. Larrie Lodin, Nashville Jazz Machine, Jimmy Raney, Buddv DeFranco, Vince DiMartino and Denis DiB- lasio have performed with the group. MTSU enjoys the prestige of having Duke as its Blues Crusade director. George Peabody College for Teachers in Nash\ille granted Duke his B.S.,M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. He has formly directed the bands of Lewisburg and Cohn (Nashville) High Schools and Tennessee Tech University. Al Hirt, Perry Como, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, Edgar Winter and Doc Severenson are names Duke is familiar with; he has recorded with them all. Duke has been a member of the American Feder- ation of Musicians for more than 38 years. May 9, 1964: An unlikely challenger ends the Beatles' reign atop the U.S. pop charts May 9 Following the ascension of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" to #1 in early February, the Beatles held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for three and a half solid months—longer than any popular artist before or since. Over the course of those months, the Fab Four earned three consecutive #1 singles (a record); held all five spots in the top five in early April (a record); and had a total of 14 songs in the Billboard Hot 100 in mid-April (yet another record). But just when it seemed that no homegrown act would ever stand up to the British invaders, one of least likely American stars imaginable proved himself equal to the task. On May 9, 1964, the great Louis Armstrong, age 63, broke the Beatles' stranglehold on the U.S. pop charts with the #1 hit "Hello Dolly." In a way, it was entirely appropriate that a titan such as Louis Armstrong would be the artist to end the reign of the first foreign group ever to take over the American pop scene. It can be argued, after all, that Armstrong bears more responsibility for shaping the course of 20th-century American music than Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra combined. Louis Armstrong became one of jazz music's first individual superstars as a young trumpet player in the 1920s and 30s, but more than that, he revolutionized jazz itself by turning it into an individual improvisational art form.

He is regarded as one of the most important and influential musicians in the history of jazz music. Early life Louis Daniel Armstrong was born in New Orleans on August 4, 1901. He was one of two children born to Willie Armstrong, a turpentine worker, and Mary Ann Armstrong, whose grandparents had been slaves. As a youngster, he sang on the streets with friends. His parents separated when he was five. He lived with his sister, mother, and grandmother in a rundown area of New Orleans known as "the Battlefield" because of the gambling, drunkenness, fighting, and shooting that frequently occurred there. In 1913 Armstrong was arrested for firing a gun into the air on New Year's Eve. He was sent to the Waif's Home (a reform school), where he took up the cornet (a trumpet-like instrument) and eventually played in a band. After his release he worked odd jobs and began performing with local groups. He was also befriended by Joe "King" Oliver, leader of the first great African American band to make records, who gave him trumpet lessons. Armstrong joined Oliver in Chicago, Illinois, in 1922, remaining there until 1924, when he went to New York City to play with Fletcher Henderson's band.
