To Mexico with Corazón and Karacho

On to the third round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) with plenty of heart and at full throttle – with Corazón and Karacho. When the Volkswagen team lines up at its first gravel rally of the year, in Mexico from 05 to 08 March, it will also face another major challenge: high altitude, with sections of the route as high as 2,752 metres above sea level. And to add to the herculean task they face in the heart of Mexico, the Volkswagen pairings of Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F), Andreas Mikk elsen/Ola Fløene (N/N) and Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) come into the event as first, second and fourth in the World Championship standings, meaning the three Polo R WRCs will once again have the unenviable task of opening the route on two of the three days. Volkswagen plans to overcome this disad- vantage with courageous driving and clever engineering. FIA World Rally Championship 05

“The Rally Mexico represents the first gravel rally of the year. This means that the drivers and technicians must once again adapt to completely conditions to the ones they faced at the Rally Monte Carlo and most recently in Sweden,” said V olkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito.

“Then there are the special stages, which really hit the heights – higher than anywhere else in the world of rallying. Coming just two weeks after the Rally Sweden, it is time to flip the switch as we strive to tame the unique conditions in Mexico – something we will need a lot of heart to achieve. As well as the drivers, the engineers are also under a lot of pressure in Mexico. They have to find the best possible way to compensate for the thin air at such high altitude, as well as adapting the set-up for the gravel surfaces. However, we are confident that we can pull this off, as we have always enjoyed good results in Mexico in the past. No question: we want to win there again this year.”

The only way is up, 21 times – from 1,800 to 2,752 metres above sea level The entire Rally Mexico takes place higher up than anything the rally cars, which generate up to 318 hp, are used to facing in Europe. Whereas the highest point in the European season is 1,608 metres above sea level – on the “La Bollène-Vésubie– Sospel” special stage at the Rally Monte Carlo – the lowest point of the Rally Mexico is at exactly 1,800 metres above sea level. In 2015 the rally is divided into 21 special stages, including genuine challenges like the “roof” of the Rally Mexico: “El Chocolate”, which climbs to 2,752 metres above sea level and is the highest point in the WRC season. 06 Technology

The Polo R WRC, Version 2.0

The World Championship winning Polo has a younger brother: the new Volkswagen Polo R WRC for the 2015 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) shares the same genes as its predecessor, but has been painstakingly further developed in many areas. While the new blue, blue, white appearance of the production- based shell represents a visual revolution, the optimisation pro- cess under the bonnet was at the heart of the precise evolution. The Volkswagen engineers meticulously inspected 75 per cent of the car that won the championship in 2013 and 2014, seeking out any potential for improvement and gradually pushing ahead with its further development. As well as the complete optimisa- tion of larger modules – such as the sequential gearbox with shift paddles, which is permitted again in 2015 – the chassis and engine of the Polo R WRC have also taken another step forward FIA World Rally Championship 07 technologically, thanks to the sum of many detailed improve- ments made ahead of the 2015 season.

“When developing the first Polo R WRC, our priority was first to develop a fast car, which we then gradually improved until it was also reliable,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “This philosophy proved its worth, and has also been applied to the evolutionary further development of the second genera tion of the Polo R WRC. When we started to improve our World Championship winning car, we did so from an outstand- ing basis. Our engineers went about their work meticulously and with absolute commitment, and the result makes a perfect impression. We are excited to see how our World Rally Car fares against the opposition.”

Getting a shift on – new shift-paddle gearbox Like its predecessor, the 2015 version of the Polo R WRC is based on the same basic car – the roadworthy Polo R WRC. While the principle idea behind the development process was one of evolution, one component was very much the exception: the shift-paddle gearbox, which is permitted again in 2015. This represents a new development in every sense.

In the future, the driver will no longer exert energy shifting gear by pushing and pulling the gear lever. From now on, he will change gear using a shift paddle, which is permanently incorporated in the steering column and electronically conveys the gear change to the hydraulic gearbox. The major benefit: from now on, the driver can always have both hands on the steering wheel. 08 Technical specifications

In addition to a variety of spices, flavours and intense, most of today’s Mexican food is based on pre-Columbian traditions, including Maya and Aztec, combined with trends introduced by Spanish colonists. Mexican food varies by region, because of local climate and geography and ethnic differences. The country is also famous for its agave schnapps, shortly known as tequila. The drink is traditional served with salt and a piece of lemon.

Speed limit The speed limit in towns is 40 kilometres per hour and is indi- cated everywhere else by road signs. Highway speeds can vary between 80 and 110 kilometres per hour. Wearing seat belts is compulsory. Mobile phones are not to be used while driving. Carry your driving licence at all times. 22 Rally history

Rally Mexico History

At a glance

The Rally Guanajuato Mexico, first known as Rally America and later Corona Rally Mexico, was first held in 1979 through a spirit of co-operation by the two largest automobile clubs in Mexico: Club Automovilístico Francés de México (CAF) and the Rally Automovil Club (RAC). The event was originally hosted in the State Mexico and ran continuously until 1985.

After an absence of six years, the event ran again in 1991 and followed the route of El Paso de Cortés, between two of Mexico’s largest volcanoes. CAF then opted for a differ- ent concept: a short rally with a high percentage of special stages. This event was held in Valle de Bravo in 1993. Rally Mexico 23

In 1998, the organizers decided to rename the event and move it to León, Guanajuato. With a long-term business plan focusing on inclusion in the FIA World Rally Champion ship (WRC) in place, the event ran again in 1999 and 2000, stepping up a gear each year. From 2001 to 2003, the organizers went for observation by the World Automobile Association (FIA).

In 2004, the Rally Mexico made its debut in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The premiere winners: Markko Märtin/Michael Park (EST/GB) in a Ford Focus.

In 2009, the Rally Mexico was not part of the FIA World Rally Championship. The event was run as International Rally of Nations instead. The winners: / (A/A) in a Mitsubishi.

Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) won the Rally Mexico in 2013 despite “The Mysterious Incident of the Closed Gate” at kilometre 32 of the 18th special stage. Despite losing about 37 seconds because of an emergency stop from full rally speed, their time was still good enough to finish sixth fastest on the stage. It was the first victory for the Polo R WRC on gravel.

Last year, Volkswagen celebrated a one-two in Mexico. Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) won ahead of their team mates Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN). In addition, Ogier secured three extra points by winning the final Power Stage, while Latvala finished runner-up again. 24 Rally map Rally Mexico 25 26 Rally schedule

Typical Volkswagen

The World Rally Championship commitment sees Volkswagen come full circle: the FIA World Rally Championship is the most important and highest-ranked racing series, in which production-based cars are used. Maintaining a close association with production products has always been an integral part of V olkswagen’s motorsport strategy.

Beetle goes America In 2014, Volkswagen of America has joined forces with US racing specialists Andretti Autosport to form the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Team. The Rallycross Beetle with four-wheel drive, a TSI engine generating more than 560 hp (412 kW) is driven by Tanner Foust and Scott Speed, who finished third overall in the 2014 season. Excitement and pure racing are guaranteed. Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen brand 31

Battles, drifts and rock ’n’ roll Since the 2014 season, Volkswagen Motorsport has an exclusive three-year partnership with Swedish rallycross team Marklund Motorsport in the World Rallycross Championship. It was a successful debut season for the Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar: number one driver Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen finished second, his Swedish team mate Anton Marklund sixth in the overall classifi- cation. Next stop: the 2015 season with more battles, drifts and rock ’n’ roll – powered by Volkswagen.

Success bred through tradition: Volkswagen and Formula 3 Not only in Formula V but also later as engine supplier in Formula 3 from 1979 until nowadays, Volkswagen always focusses on sup- porting young drivers leading towards big careers in Formula One, Le Mans or DTM. Motorsport legends like Michael Schumacher, Tom Kristensen or Bernd Schneider are among the big names. Also current talents as Felipe Nasr, Daniel Ricciardo, junior, Jean-Eric Vergne or Max Verstappen took their first steps in a Volkswagen powered single-seater in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship or British Formula 3 Championship. 32 Websites

GTI: Volkswagen’s sportiest Polo

With the Polo R WRC, Volkswagen has become involved in motorsport in the world championship that is most like series vehicles – the World Rally Championship. Its genes can also be found in Volkswagen’s product portfolio. Such sporting auto mobile icons have the initials “GTI” at Volkswagen – for example, the Polo GTI, whose new generation made its debut at the Paris motor show last year. The new Polo GTI comes with a multitude of technical innovations – from a 192 hp EU-6 engine to the infotainment system with MirrorLinkTM.

The latest addition to the GTI series, with an impressive 141 kW/ 192 hp from a 1.8-litre TSI engine is 9 kW/12 hp more power- ful than its predecessor. The “young wild one” sparkles with a driving performance typical of GTI. In only 6.7 seconds, the Polo Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen brand 35

GTI accelerates from zero to 100 km/h, its top speed peaks at 236 km/h. A maximum torque of up to 320 Nm ensures agility no matter what happens on the road. Meanwhile, the extreme efficiency of the Polo GTI can be seen in its consumption data: the Polo GTI with DSG uses 5.6 litres every 100 km (129 g/km

CO2) while the version with a manual 6-speed gearbox needs

6.0 litres every 100 km (139 g/km CO2).

Standalone bumpers, red GTI emblem, distinctive side skirts and the rear spoiler unique to the GTI make the Polo GTI distinctive at first sight. A sport chassis, 17 inch alloy wheels and fog lights also come as standard. In the interior, a sporty steering wheel, the combination instrument and sporty seats in the style of the larger Golf GTI testify to its sporting genes.

The driving experience in the Polo GTI is even more dynamic with the new optional “Sport Select” chassis (electronically adjustable dampers) with the “Sport Performance Kit”. At the touch of a button, the chassis, gearbox, engine sound and steering are tuned to be more agile. LED main highlights are optional.

The infotainment pallet has also been completely redesigned, with three radio CD systems and a radio CD navigation system. Depending on the version, the devices come with functions such as Bluetooth audio streaming (in conjunction with a smartphone incl. cover display and touchscreen control), a parking sensor and connecting a mobile phone to the external antenna of the vehicle via an inductive interface. MirrorLink also lets you use special smartphone apps via the touchscreen. 36 Partners
