It has been a week since the fair ended on Sunday, August 19th and I am still tired! We actually counted people attending our exhibit in 2009 and came up with approximately 75,000 people visiting the Wine Experience. Just about everything we do at the Wine Experience has grown in size since we first started with this in 2009. New this year was the Iowa Wine Growers Association’s Wine & Cheese Tent sharing our hill. Who knows what the attendance was this year. My guess is that we more than exceeded the original 75,000 visitors we had in 2009. 1,097,142 people attended the 2012 Iowa State fair. This was second only to the 1.109,150 attendance they had in 2008. 1 Some of the key statistics from this year’s Wine Experience included: - 185 rounds of grape stomps (compared to 143 in 2011) - 6 tons of grapes used for stomping and grape pressing in the kids Grape GetaWay - 2,850 Iowa Wine and Beer brochures handed out - 110 Iowa wines from 22 wineries submitted in the Commercial Wine Competition - 144+ volunteers helping with the exhibit The overall winner of the Grape Stomp for the fair was the Jenny Studer team of 4 people from Kanawha, Iowa, with 21.5 centimeters of juice measured in the pail. We had grape stompers come from these states: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Washington DC. Additional stompers participated from these countries: Austria, China, England, France Guam, India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Uganda. It was truly a multi-cultural experience for all. I have put 101 photos of the 2012 Wine Experience into my facebook album here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.465509633469178.104724.100000304374293&type=3 None of this could have been done without the 144+ volunteers who helped. Two people who provided exceptional help was Barb Rasko of Indianola who for the 4th year in a row was the superintendent of the exhibit. Another person who gave their time unselfishly was Amanda Poole of Ankeny who used her vacation days to help out every day of the fair. There were many others who worked several shifts over several days to make this happen. I would like to thank all the following people for their help in making the Wine Experience at the 2012 Iowa State Fair such a success.
