Another Successful “Wine Experience” at the 2012 Iowa State Fair

We completed our 4th successful “Wine Experience” at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. It has been a week since the fair ended on Sunday, August 19th and I am still tired! We actually counted people attending our exhibit in 2009 and came up with approximately 75,000 people visiting the Wine Experience. Just about everything we do at the Wine Experience has grown in size since we first started with this in 2009. New this year was the Growers Association’s Wine & Cheese Tent sharing our hill. Who knows what the attendance was this year. My guess is that we more than exceeded the original 75,000 visitors we had in 2009. 1,097,142 people attended the 2012 Iowa State fair. This was second only to the 1.109,150 attendance they had in 2008. 1

Some of the key statistics from this year’s Wine Experience included:

- 185 rounds of grape stomps (compared to 143 in 2011) - 6 tons of grapes used for stomping and grape pressing in the kids Grape GetaWay - 2,850 Iowa Wine and Beer brochures handed out - 110 Iowa from 22 wineries submitted in the Commercial Wine Competition - 144+ volunteers helping with the exhibit

The overall winner of the Grape Stomp for the fair was the Jenny Studer team of 4 people from Kanawha, Iowa, with 21.5 centimeters of juice measured in the pail. We had grape stompers come from these states: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, , Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, , Mississippi, , Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Washington DC.

Additional stompers participated from these countries: Austria, China, England, France Guam, India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Uganda. It was truly a multi-cultural experience for all.

I have put 101 photos of the 2012 Wine Experience into my facebook album here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.465509633469178.104724.100000304374293&type=3

None of this could have been done without the 144+ volunteers who helped. Two people who provided exceptional help was Barb Rasko of Indianola who for the 4th year in a row was the superintendent of the exhibit. Another person who gave their time unselfishly was Amanda Poole of Ankeny who used her vacation days to help out every day of the fair. There were many others who worked several shifts over several days to make this happen. I would like to thank all the following people for their help in making the Wine Experience at the 2012 Iowa State Fair such a success. (Forgive me if I forgot someone.):

You may receive priority if you are a beginning farmer or rancher, a socially-disadvantaged farmer or rancher, a small or medium-sized farm or ranch structured as a family farm, a farmer or rancher cooperative, or are proposing a mid-tier value chain, as defined in the Program Regulation. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis.

Gold Medal Winners at the Iowa State Fair

The Strawberry Fest wine produced by Eagles Landing Winery of Marquette won the Double Gold award in the Iowa Wine Commercial Competition judged Saturday, July 28, prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Strawberry Fest was the only entrant to receive a Double Gold award.

Two panels of judges conducted blind tastings of 110 wines entered by 22 Iowa wineries.

The competition uses an awards system based on how the wine should be shared. A Gold award means the wine would be one you would be “proud to take to a dinner party.” A Silver award denotes a wine that you would be “proud to serve to friends in my home,” while a Bronze award signifies a wine that a person “will enjoy drinking at home.”

Other gold winners of this year’s commercial competition included:

Glow (Brianna) from Fireside Winery in Marengo Iowa from Summerset Winery in Indianola Sweet Ruby from Eagles Landing Winery in Marquette Brambleberry from Eagles Landing Winery in Marquette Blackberry from Ackerman Winery in South Amana Red Raspberry from Ackerman Winery in South Amana

Spotted Wine Drosophila (SWD) Suspected in Iowa

The ISU Plant & Insect Diagnostic Clinic has recently received a few reports of suspected spotted wing drosophila (SWD) in raspberries. We have not yet confirmed this insect in Iowa, but may do so shortly. Please let me know if you happen to see some white, headless and legless very small worms in your fruit.

Spotted wing drosophila is a new invasive insect pest. Unlike our regular fruit flies that attack rotten fruit, the SWD will attack healthy fruit and usually right before harvest. They tend to be worse on soft bodied fruits like raspberry, blueberry, cherries, grapes, etc. Although invasive this is not a regulated pest so there are no quarantines or other regulatory actions associated with it.

You can read more about SWD at the following websites:
