    Screams on Screens: Paradigms of Horror Barry Keith Grant Brock University [email protected] Abstract This paper offers a broad historical overview of the ideology and cultural roots of horror films. The genre of horror has been an important part of film history from the beginning and has never fallen from public popularity. It has also been a staple category of multiple national cinemas, and benefits from a most extensive network of extra-cinematic institutions. Horror movies aim to rudely move us out of our complacency in the quotidian world, by way of negative emotions such as horror, fear, suspense, terror, and disgust. To do so, horror addresses fears that are both universally taboo and that also respond to historically and culturally specific anxieties. The ideology of horror has shifted historically according to contemporaneous cultural anxieties, including the fear of repressed animal desires, sexual difference, nuclear warfare and mass annihilation, lurking madness and violence hiding underneath the quotidian, and bodily decay. But whatever the particular fears exploited by particular horror films, they provide viewers with vicarious but controlled thrills, and thus offer a release, a catharsis, of our collective and individual fears. Introduction Insofar as both film and videogames are visual forms that unfold in time, there is no question that the latter take their primary inspiration from the former.     Film Review: Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion (1970) To follow up my previous piece about the great films showing at Il Cinema Ritrovato next week, I am reviewing another film that will be shown during the festival: Investigation Of A Citizen Above Suspicion, a fascinating, but somewhat forgotten thriller that won the best foreign film Oscar in 1971. Investigation… concerns a police detective who kills his girlfriend and leaves plenty of evidence behind to prove that he is indeed “above suspicion.” Even after the initial crime he goes out of his way to implicate himself and exonerate other suspects while slowly mentally unraveling due to the stress of not being caught. All of this is set to a backdrop of leftist protestors and widespread government spying, which is legitimized by the conservative government’s fear of the liberal left. Ultimately an expertly crafted satire, Investigation… is equal parts comedy, giallo and poliziotteschi, or for those who are unfamiliar with Italian cinema, comedy, murder mystery and investigation thriller. The writing is complex and intriguing while the acting is pitch perfect throughout, even though the tone of the film shifts from comedy to taught suspense. Fans of Italian cinema will certainly recognize two of the film’s stars Gian Maria Volonté (For A Few Dollars More, A Fistful Of Dollars) and Florinda Bolkan (A Lizard In A Woman’s Skin, Don’t Torture A Duckling). And while we’re on the subject of recognition, the score to this film was composed by none other than Ennio Moricone and is certainly one of the most memorable scores of his long and varied career.

Altri racconti: giallo tradizionale e fantascienza, cyberpunk, memorie e clonazione. Nel decennio che separa La rocca dei celti dalla vittoria al Premio Urania 1997, R. continuò la sua attività di scrittore di racconti, fra i quali vogliamo ricordare Archeologia1, un vero e proprio giallo fantascientifico, Saluti dal lago di Mandelbrot2, un racconto cyberpunk dalle atmosfere noir e Se io fossi Escherichia coli3, sul tema della clonazione, approfondimento e divagazione a proposito dei concetti espressi nel romanzo. I primi due racconti sono particolarmente interessanti perché mostrano la duttilità della scrittura di R. e la capacità di piegare il linguaggio alle esigente del contenuto. Sebbene R. non ami in modo particolare il giallo classico, Archeologia si manifesta come una riproposizione del modello del romanzo-enigma ambientato in un luogo circoscritto, alla Agatha Christie; il tradizionale delitto della “camera chiusa”, insomma. In questo caso la piccola “comunità” dove si svolge la storia è un gruppo di amici che giocano con la “commutazione”, un procedimento che trasla l’essenza di una persona nel corpo di una seconda, con un sistema casuale e a rotazione, sesso per sesso, e assoluto anonimato. Il protagonista Finn accetta di giocare con la moglie Franziska; nel suo gruppo di amici intimi, dove già Hannibal, il primo marito, dieci anni addietro era stato misteriosamente assassinato mentre si stava riprendendo dalla commutazione. Finn avverte da subito una strana atmosfera, e ha la sensazione di essere invischiato in un gioco più grande di lui; e infatti la commutazione ha un risultato particolare, Finn trasla nel corpo di una donna, Tersicore; e ci resta, fino a quando il suo corpo-Finn non muore quasi accidentalmente, e un altro corpo non afferma di essere lui l’essenza di Finn.

    1 1. Introduction From the French Fantastique, to weird fiction and Giallo cinema, directors and authors like Dario Argento and H.P. Lovecraft have managed to shock and terrify their audiences for generations with their unique styles, codes and conventions utilized in their works, and their examination of the subgenres they work in. This essay takes a look at how I pay homage to these great forerunners of horror, from the writing style I chose to adopt, as well as the structure of the novel and the perspective from which one reads it. It shall also investigate various mythologies I draw inspiration from, and the subgenres in which I work in and the how I invert certain conventions and aspects found again and again in literature and cinema of this kind to suit the context of my novel. Our Immaculate deals with an extra-terrestrial threat lurking under an old all-girls school in the Magaliesburg. 2. About The novel takes place over a period of twenty-four hours. Electra Almacy, a Matric pupil who used to be head girl at the school, is the protagonist of the story. She is restless, hates the teaching staff (in particular the ruthless principal Doctor Hamilton) and yearns to start living her life outside of the school and dreams of exploring the world. One night, after going to detention, she and a friend are attacked by another Matric pupil and they are forced to hide in a tunnel underneath the school. While in the tunnel, Electra passes out and wakes up in a room with nine other girls.

    “I am just a Policeman”: The Case of Carlo Lucarelli’s and Maurizio de Giovanni’s Historical Crime Novels Set During Fascism Barbara Pezzotti Summary: This article analyzes two successful Italian novels set during the Ventennio and the Second World War, namely Carlo Lucarelli’s Carta bianca (1990) and Maurizio De Giovanni’s Per mano mia (2011). It shows how Lucarelli confronts the troubling adherence to Fascism through a novel in which investigations are continually hampered by overpowering political forces. By contrast, in spite of expressing an anti-Fascist view, De Giovanni’s novel ends up providing a sanitized version of the Ventennio that allows the protagonist to fulfil his role as a policeman without outward contradictions. By mixing crime fiction and history, Lucarelli intervenes in the revisionist debate of the 1980s and 1990s by attacking the new mythology of the innocent Fascist. Twenty years later, following years of Berlusconi’s propaganda, De Giovanni waters down the hybridization of crime fiction and history with the insertion of romance and the supernatural in order to provide entertaining stories and attract a large audience. In the final analysis, from being functional to political and social criticism in Lucarelli’s series, the fruitful hybridization of crime fiction and history has turned into a mirror of the political and historical de-awareness of Italian society of the 2000s in De Giovanni’s series. This article analyzes two successful Italian novels set during the Fascist period or Ventennio (1922–1943) and the Second World War, namely Carlo Lucarelli’s Carta bianca (1990; translated as Carte Blanche in 2006), featuring Inspector De Luca as the main protagonist, and Maurizio De Giovanni’s Per mano mia (2011; By My Hand, 2014), with Inspector Ricciardi as the police detective.

    22 “Te sound, it looks wonderful.” — Dario Argento If the colour yellow once evoked the pleasant imagery of bright summer days and blooming bush daisies, it certainly took a dark turn in the cinematic world of twentieth century Italy. Murder mysteries shot in saturated colours depicting grim, twisted nightmares of brutal killings became the new yellow—the giallo flm. But before referring to a genre of graphic Italian horror flms, giallo, the Italian word for yellow, was used to describe a genre of paperback mystery novels with bright yellow spines and covers introduced by the Milanese publishing house Mondadori in 1929.1 Most of the stories were translations of English whodunits and hard- boiled detective novels, including work by Edgar Allan Poe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Agatha Christie 2, with translations of Edgar Wallace novels appearing to be some of the most popular during the 1930s and 1940s.3 Despite the fact some critics, such as Alberto Savino, believed that mysteries were “unnatural” and “foreign” to Italian culture, these novels managed to inspire not only an Italian literary tradition with authors such as Giorgio Scerbanenco, Andrea Camilleri, and Carlo Lucarelli 4, but also some of the most terrifying and visually striking flms to come out of Italy during the 1960s and 1970s. Gialli frequently cross generic boundaries of crime flms, horror movies, and thrillers, and therefore may be more appropriately considered flone, as they are by many Italian critics, rather than part of a genre.5 Meaning large thread, the term flone is used to indicate a looser collection of similar themes and styles.6 Gialli can be more generally related to each other in this way, and thus a flm like Dario Argento’s Suspiria (1977) can be called giallo despite its greater resemblance to the supernatural horror thriller.
