Collect your Cycle Surgery Hire Bikes and have a ride around Clyde before settling into your accommodation for the night. Day Two Cycle 37km from Clyde to Omakau, approximately 5 hours cycling. Enjoy lunch at the Chatto Creek Tavern before cycling up Tiger Hill (the steepest climb on the Rail Trail – just remember it is not that steep – trains used to go up it!). It is then downhill into Omakau. Day Three Today you will cycle through one of the most picturesque sections of the Rail Trail - The Poolburn Gorge. Make sure you carry plenty of snacks and water today. Today you will cycle 29km from Omakau to Oturehua. Day Four Today you will cycle 25km from Oturehua to Ranfurly. You will cycle past the highest point on the Rail Trail – downhill from here! Make sure when you are in Ranfurly to visit the Ranfurly I-Site and sit in the Railway Carriage and watch the DVD on the Otago Central Rail Trail. Day Five You will cycle 32km from Ranfurly to Hyde. This includes another picturesque section through the Upper Taieri Gorge. Day Six From Hyde you will cycle through the heart of the Strath Taieri Valley to Middlemarch. ISBN 978-0-478-37633-3 Prepared by Scott Wilson and Jens Rekker Published March 2012 Groundwater Exploration in the Ida Valley i Foreword Groundwater in Otago is frequently the sole or major source of water to supply basic water needs to communities and stock watering. Currently groundwater only supplies a small proportion of irrigation needs, however there is increasing pressure for people to turn to groundwater because surface water supplies are heavily allocated. Otago Regional Council’s Regional Policy Statements for Water provide for the Otago people and communities having access to water for their present and reasonably foreseeable needs. The Ida Valley is in one of the driest parts of the region and new groundwater sources would be a valuable asset. This report provides an assessment of the likely availability of sustainable sources of groundwater, based on geological data, geophysical surveying and drilling exploratory bores. Dowsett _____________________ Lincoln University 2008 ii Abstract Abstract of a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of M.Soc.Sci. ‘Rural Restructuring’: A Multi-Scalar Analysis of the Otago Central Rail Trail. By O. Dowsett ‘Rural restructuring’ has frequently been used to indicate the magnitude, and conceptualise the nature, of contemporary change in the countryside. Most notably, concern has focused upon the fundamental changes in economic and social organisation brought about by the increasing leverage of consumption-based activity as a path to rural development. By drawing on the relevant literature, however, I suggest in this thesis that the use of ‘rural restructuring’ as a conceptual framework has been inconsistent. The issue of scale is a case in point with scholars positioning their studies of rural change at varying levels of analysis. In response, I adopt Massey’s (2004) arguments about space and place to present an alternative model which considers ‘rural restructuring’ as a multi-scalar and mutually constitutive process. To explore the feasibility of approaching ‘rural restructuring’ in this way, the thesis focuses, in particular, upon the development of rural tourism at five different scales. These comprise the national scale (New Zealand), the regional scale (Central Otago), the sub-regional scale (the Otago Central Rail Trail), the business scale (five business case studies) and the individual scale (five entrepreneurial case studies).
