YURTCAN Abstract Eleven agricultural and silviculturally important species of Noctuidae and their parasitoids were determined in 33 localities from the Western Black Sea region between 2001 and 2004. The ichneumonid biological control agents Enicospilus ramidulus, Barylypa amabilis and Itoplectis alternans were obtained by rearing the host larvae. Larvae of some species are par- ticularly harmful to agricultural and silvicultural regions worldwide. Consequently, for years intense efforts have been carried out to control them through chemical, biological, and cultural methods (LIBURD et al. 2000; HOBALLAH et al. 2004; TOPRAK & GÜRKAN 2005). In the field, noctuid control is often carried out by parasitoid wasps (CHO et al. 2006). Ichneumonids are one of the most prevalent parasitoid groups of noctuids but they also parasitize on other many Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera and Araneae (KASPARYAN 1981; FITTON et al. 1987, 1988; GAULD & BOLTON 1988; WAHL 1993; GEORGIEV & KOLAROV 1999). -

Rapid Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) for: Euzophera bigella June 2018 Summary and conclusions of the rapid PRA Euzophera bigella is a moth found in much of Europe and parts of Asia, whose larvae (caterpillars) feed inside a variety of fruit and under the bark of a number of species of tree. Though there have been several adults caught in light traps in the UK, such records are very scarce and there is no evidence this species is established in any part of this country. Following the rapid screening of E. bigella via the UK Plant Health Risk Register, this PRA was requested to further assess the potential risk to the UK. This rapid PRA shows: Risk of entry The pathway of fruit (and nuts) is considered moderately likely, with medium confidence. Larvae have previously been found in imported fruit in the UK. If larvae were able to complete development inside the fruit, emerging adults would be capable of flying off and locating new hosts. The pathway of larvae under the bark of older trees for planting is considered moderately likely, with medium confidence. Larvae under the bark of younger, smaller trees is assessed as unlikely with medium confidence, as infestations produce swellings and cracks in the bark which are more likely to be seen in smaller trees. The pathway of wood with bark is considered unlikely with low confidence. Confidence is low because a different species of Euzophera has recently travelled from the USA to Italy on this pathway. 1 The pathway of natural spread is considered very unlikely with low confidence. -

From these organisms, which 15 of parasitoid species were found, those species belonging to 5 families in of the order Hymenoptera (Ichneumonidae, Chalcididae, Eulophidae, Elasmidae, Pteromalidae). Nine of these, in which there were 9 of were ichneumonid wasp species: Xanthopimpla flavolineata, Goryphus basilaris, Xanthopimpla punctata, Itoplectis naranyae, Coccygomimus nipponicus, Coccygomimus aethiops, Phaeogenes sp., Atanyjoppa akonis, Triptognatus sp. We discuss the general biology, habitat preferences, and host association of the knowledge of three of these parasitoids, (Xanthopimpla flavolineata, Phaeogenes sp., and Goryphus basilaris). Including general biology, habitat preferences and host association were indicated and discussed. -

Archips rosana (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a highly polyphagous pest species, has potential economic importance on fruit crops. The present study aimed to gather data on species composition of parasitoids of Archips rosana. It was carried out in the years 2010-2011 in organic cherry orchards in the province of Edirne (Turkey). Twenty-two parasitic hymenopteran species belonging to three families (Ichneumonidae, Braconidae and Chalcididae) and one dipteran species (Tachinidae) were determined. Braconidae was found to be the most frequently represented family with 13 species, followed by Ichneumonidae 8, Chalcididae and Tachinidae with one species, respectively. Parasitoids from the superfamily Ichneumonoidea (Braconidae and Ichneumonidae) turned out to be the most effective, and the dominating species was endoparasitoid Itoplectis maculator (Fabricius, 1775). Archips rosana was found for the first time to serve as a host for Pimpla spuria Gravenhorst, 1829; Scambus buolianae (Hartig, 1838); Bracon (Habrobracon) hebetor Say, 1836; Bracon (Bracon) intercessor Nees, 1834; Meteorus versicolor (Wesmael, 1835) and Meteorus rufus (DeGeer, 1778). This information should be helpful in the development of biological control programs to manage A. rosana in cherry orchards. -

The painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Nymphalinae) is well known for its seasonal long-distance migrations and for its dramatic population fluctuations between years. Although parasitism has occasionally been noted as an important mortality factor for this butterfly, no comprehensive study has quantified and compared its parasitoid com- plexes in different geographical areas or seasons. In 2009, a year when this butterfly was extraordinarily abundant in the western Palaearctic, we assessed the spatial and temporal variation in larval parasitism in central Morocco (late winter and autumn) and north-east Spain (spring and late summer). The primary parasitoids in the complexes comprised a few relatively specialized koinobi- onts that are a regular and important mortality factor in the host populations. -

PESTS OF STORED GRAINS Worldwide losses in stored products caused by insects have been estimated to be between 5 and 10%. Stored-product insects cause serious postharvest losses, estimated to be from 9% in developed countries to 20% or more in developing countries. They also contribute to contamination of food products by presence of live insects, insect products such as chemical excretions, dead insects and insect body fragments and accumulation of chemical insecticide residues in food, making the food unfit for human consumption. 1. Pulse Beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L.: (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) Distribution: The beetle’s natural ranges are in the tropics and subtropics of Asia. Host Range: C. chinensis is a common and major pest of stored legumes. Preferred hosts are Vigna radiata (mung bean), Pisum sativum (pea), Vigna unguiculata (cowpea), Cajanus cajan (pigeon pea), Vigna angularis (adzuki bean) and Lens culinaris (lentil). Nature of Damage: The larvae chew tunnels through the bean until it is ready to pupate. Larvae feed and develop inside the seed and when adults emerge they leave a neat circular exit hole. Heavy infestation causes the commodity to heat. This results in loss of quality and mould growth. 2. Lesser Grain Borer, Rhyzopertha dominica Fabricius: (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) Distribution and Status: It is found in India, Algeria, Greece, the USA, New South Wales (Australia), Japan and China. Host Range: It is found on wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, barley, lentils, army biscuits, ship biscuits, stored and dried potatoes, corn flour, beans, pumpkin seeds, tamarind seeds and millets. Nature of Damage: The lesser grain borer is characterized as both an internal and external feeder and is a serious pest of both whole kernel stored grain and cereal products. -

Two of these species, Trichomalopsis heterogynidis and Phryxe hirta, are oligophagous parasitoids specialized on the genus Heterogynis. We also identified two newly recorded parasitoids of Heterogynis: Brachymeria inermis (Chalcididae) and Diplazon laetatorius (Ichneumonidae). Lukas Seehausen Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Forestry University of Toronto 2016 Abstract The eastern spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is one of the most important outbreaking defoliator in conifer forests of eastern North America. In low-density populations, the larval endoparasitoid Tranosema rostrale (Brischke) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is known as an important mortality factor, but relatively little information is available about the factors influencing its ability to keep spruce budworm populations low. A series of studies were conducted to investigate T. rostrale’s: 1) reproductive biology and behaviour; 2) seasonal pattern of parasitism and host instar preference; 3) developmental, survival, and reproductive response to temperature; 4) ability to abrogate spruce budworm’s immune response at high temperatures; and 5) spatiotemporal biology in response to changing temperature. Three traits of the parasitoid’s reproductive biology contribute to its successful parasitism: its lack of a pre-mating and preoviposition period, the rapid maturity of its eggs soon after emergence despite being synovigenic, and its efficacy in host searching and oviposition behaviour. As T. rostrale does not prefer to attack any one particular host instar, its seasonal pattern of parasitism is likely influenced by its phenology or competition with the ectoparasitoid Elachertus cacoeciae (Howard) ii (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae).
