Jortner, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2005 This dissertation, prepared towards the completion of a Ph.D. in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, examines “Yankee Theatre” in America and London through a post-colonial lens from 1787 to 1855. Actors under consideration include: Charles Mathews, James Hackett, George Hill, Danforth Marble and Joshua Silsbee. These actors were selected due to their status as iconic performers in “Yankee Theatre.” The Post-Revolutionary period in America was filled with questions of national identity. Much of American culture came directly from England. American citizens read English books, studied English texts in school, and watched English theatre. They were inundated with English culture and unsure of what their own civilization might look like. -

Samuel Wilson, Who, Along with an Older Brother, Ebenezer, Supplied the Army with Meat from Troy, New York
Memoranda and Documents A NOTE ON THE ORIGINS OF “UNCLE SAM,” 1810–1820 donald r. hickey ONVENTIONAL wisdom holds that “Uncle Sam,” the popular C personification for the United States government, was inspired during the War of 1812 by Samuel Wilson, who, along with an older brother, Ebenezer, supplied the army with meat from Troy, New York. The Wilsons employed as many as two hundred people, includ- ing many relatives who had moved to Troy to work in the diversified family business. The nieces and nephews referred to Sam Wilson as Uncle Sam, and such was his friendly and easy-going nature that the nickname caught on among other employees and townspeople. Due to confusion over the meaning of the abbreviation “U.S.,” which was stamped on army barrels and supply wagons, the nickname suppos- edly migrated from Wilson to the federal government in 1812.1 The author has incurred numerous debts in writing this article. Georg Mauerhoff of NewsBank provided indispensable guidance in using the NewsBank databases, es- pecially the Readex newspaper collection. Charissa Loftis of the U.S. Conn Library at Wayne State College tracked down some pertinent information, and (as always) Terri Headley at the Interlibrary Loan Desk proved adept at borrowing works from other libraries. Many years ago Mariam Touba of the New-York Historical Society and Nancy Farron of the Troy Public Library shared typed transcripts of crucial documents. The author owes a special debt to Matthew Brenckle, Research Historian at the USS Constitution Museum, who brought the Isaac Mayo diary to his attention and shared his views on the document. -

A PARTIAL HISTORICAL TIMELINE OF SLAVERY AND STRUCTURAL RACISM IN AMHERST An appendix in support of A RESOLUTION AFFIRMING THE TOWN OF AMHERST’S COMMITMENT TO END STRUCTURAL RACISM AND ACHIEVE RACIAL EQUITY ____________________________________________________________________________ AUTHORING STATEMENT This timeline represents only a small sampling of Amherst’s history of white supremacy, anti-Black racism, and racial inequity. It was compiled by Reparations for Amherst, with research by Amherst resident Mattea Kramer. Cynthia Harbeson, Jones Library Special Collections, and Aaron Rubinstein, Special Collections and University Archives, University of Massachusetts, provided research assistance. This document was created in order to prepare and present evidence and factual information related to historic and contemporary instances where the Town of Amherst might have facilitated, participated, stood neutral, or enacted acts of segregative and discriminatory practices in all aspects of engagement with the Amherst Black community. The intention of this report is to compile, in one cohesive document, published facts from various works, studys, surveys, articles, recordings, policies, and resources that are freely available for public consumption. The authors have worked to compile this information and have cited materials in order to assist others in locating the document’s sources. Nicholas Fanizzi Japanese-American Internment Several times in history a country has turned on its own people. During World War II, Japan was introduced into the war, when they conducted a surprise attack on the United States’ home soil. Japan commenced an air raid on Pearl Harbor claiming the lives of over 2,300 Americans troops. With only one vote against the decision, Congress sent America to war against Japan. The rest of America supported Congress’ decision. The United States was in a full out war with Japan, which included homeland discrimination against the Japanese. Mayor Laguardia of New York took out all of the Japanese from the city and kept them in custody on Ellis Island. This started a nationwide purge of the Japanese race causing Executive Order 9066 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The proclamation authorized the military to exclude people from certain areas and force relocation (“Roosevelt”). This was for people of all foreign races but specifically targeted the Japanese. Although the immediate effects of the attack on Pearl Harbor were traumatic, the homeland reaction included racial segmentation, unjust relocation with internment camps, and stereotyping the Japanese race in America. One of his most prominent and popular cartoons was “Waiting for a Signal From Home” published on February 13th, 1942. The attack on Pearl Harbor left people worrying if the Japanese would strike again and left America feeling vulnerable. -
History and Genealogy of the Norcross Family
“Three of his sons and some of his sons-in-law were in the East Newton Company commanded by Jeremiah Wiswall son of Captain Noah and brother of Mary (Wiswall) Norcross. After the company had started for Lexington, he started on foot and alone to follow them saying I wish to see what the boys are doing. Standing with some Americans not far from the field, three British soldiers came into sight, he immediately pointed them out to his companions saying if you aim at the middle one you will hit one of the three, they did so and were successful, the other two fled. As he held out his hand pointing towards the Britons, a musket ball passed through it. He coolly bound up the hand with his handkerchief, picked up the gun of the fallen regular and brought it home as a trophy. He was then 76 years old and his name appears on the roll of the East Newton Co.” Samuel Norcross was the second Norcross settler of Maine (his brother Jonathan being the first) having moved there from Cambridge in 1763 and settled at Gardinerstown (then called Pittston). Dr. Sylvester Gardiner, for whom the town was named, and who was one of the first settlers and owned the whole territory, agreed with Mr. Norcross if he would move there, he would give him and also each of his sons 100 acres of land. He moved there, but his agreement was only a verbal one, and the breaking out of the Revolutionary War, he (Gardiner) espoused the cause of Great Britain and left Boston with the British Army in the evacuation. -
