Operational services are administered by Educational Testing Service Educational Testing Service Princeton, New Jersey Berkeley, California Evanston, Illinois Student Expense Budgets of American Colleges and Universities for the 1968-69 Academic Year This booklet, produced annually by the College Scholarship Service,(CSS), furnishes information about the costs of attending colleges in the United States. In addition it includes some Canadian institutions and a number of junior and community colleges. Not all American colleges are listed; some do not appear because they requested exclusion, filed incomplete data, or returned their informa- tion after the deadline for publication. This report is distributed to CSS member institutions and to all other colleges whose financial data are listed. The purposes of the publication are (1) to assist financial aid officers in setting appropriate schooling allowances as adjustments to entries made in Parents! Confidential Statements' (2) to facilitate cooperation between colleges on appropriate awards to mutual aid candidates and(3) to serve as a ready reference for sponsors of scholarships. The booklet's data for the publication were compiled from information that each college submitted to the College Scholarship Service on the form, "College Estimate of Student Expenses." The information is reported as it was submitted by the individual colleges. It includes tuition and living expenses, and varying amounts for personal expenses, books, travel or commutation expenses. Because some institutions did not enter any amounts for several of.these items, it was necessary to leave certain items blank. The expenses reported are for a normal, two term, academic year. Each report on a college is divided into the following sections: 1. Tuition and Fees - includes tuition, general, university, college or state institutional fees if identified. In some cases, adjustments or averages were used, since variable charges for certain curriculums or student classifications could not be accommodated. 2. Resident budgets - includes all tuition charges, fees, room and board, books, personal expenses and travel allowances entered by the institution. 3. Commuting budgets - includes all tuition charges, fees, books, commutation and maintenance allowances entered by the college or university. L. Out-of-state charges - includes the additional fee the college or university entered as a charge to students who are not residents of the state in which the institution is located. Some colleges also have charges for out-of-community or out-of-district students. For convenience these have been combined and shown as out-of-state charges. 5. An asterisk (*) indicates an institution that has a guaranteed tuition or fixed-cost plan. 6. The abbreviations for states are those listed in the Bulletin of Information, College Board Admissions Tests. CN is used to indicate Canada. The staff of the College Scholarship Service hopes that the financial information presented will be helpful, and it welcomes comments that will assist in the preparation of future editions.
