A Student Centered College Georgia Military College Student Handbook 1 A Student Centered College Welcome to Georgia Military College! Your decision to attend GMC was an excellent choice. Few experiences compare to your college days. It is a time for opening doors to new experiences, gaining new insights, and tackling new challenges. Only a very few times in your life will you be offered the opportunity to be so immersed in the learning experience. And, as a learner-centered institution, your learning is of paramount concern to us. At GMC, our focus is on you and your success. In addition to your academic success, we want to provide you with the student services that will enhance your educational experience. This support starts with admissions and includes registration, orientation, health and food services and a wide array of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities designed to give you opportunities for having fun and becoming more involved with other students while achieving your academic goals. It is important that you take the time to familiarize yourself with this handbook. It is designed to assist you in learning about the many opportunities at Georgia Military College. GMC students should stop by and see the Assistant Director/Dean of Students on your campus. Let us know how we can make your educational experience more enjoyable and rewarding. Have a great year! The vision is achieved by being accessible to any student desiring a character-based college level education, being the best two-year college in the state of Georgia and among the top five in the nation, being nationally recognized as a “best value” college, being recognized as a military friendly school, being nationally recognized in the top ten fastest growing community colleges, being nationally recognized as a leader in the innovation and delivery of individual learning support services, being nationally recognized as a leader in the innovation of programs, and by increasing scholarship endowments to make education affordable. The Mission Statement The mission of Georgia Military College (GMC) is to produce educated citizens and contributing members of society in an environment conducive to the development of the intellect and character of its students, regardless of location or method of delivery. Junior college students are offered a liberal arts-based, two-year undergraduate curriculum designed to support student attainment of an associate's degree and prepare students for transfer to four- year colleges and universities. Students with an associate of applied science degree are offered a curriculum designed to support student attainment of a Bachelor of Applied Science degree. For selected college students who enroll in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), and preparatory school students in the Junior ROTC program, GMC includes a military training and education component.     VALLEY FORGE MILITARY CHARTER SCHOOL 2022 The History of Valley Forge Military Academy In 1928, Lieutenant General Milton G. Baker founded Valley Forge Military Academy. The school was originally housed in an old Victorian building in Devon, the former Devon Park Hotel and it was comprised of 14 staff and 125 cadets its first year. On January 18, 1929 a fire broke out and the school was destroyed. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident, but General Baker was faced with the problem of beginning again and finding a new home for his institution. General Baker found that home in Wayne, in what formerly had been St. Luke’s Preparatory School. VFMAC continues to educate its cadets at this location. The History of Valley Forge Military Academy Today, Valley Forge Military Academy is an independent, private, college preparatory school for boys in grades 7-12 founded with the purpose of developing boys into young men of character, integrity and discipline. The Academy offers college preparatory academics, credentialed faculty, competitive PIAA athletics, and individual attention, providing cadets with an environment focused on their academic success. In 1935, Valley Forge Military Junior College was founded as a two-year all boys military junior college and is currently dubbed “The Military College of Pennsylvania™”. The College was created as an extension of the Academy and together the cadets from both schools form one Corps of Cadets. Today, the College is a co-educational, accredited two-year private college. It is one of only four Army ROTC Early Commissioning Programs (ECP) in the U.S., and the only in the North East.

    EDUCATION RESOURCES Youth & Young Adult Options Scholarships for Military Children Program Over the past 15 years, commissaries have awarded more than $16 million in scholarships to more than 8,012 military children. The Scholarships for Military Children Program was created to recognize military families’ contributions to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the commissary’s role in the military family community. At least one $2,000 scholarship is awarded at every commissary location that receives qualified applications. More than one scholarship per commissary may be available based on the response and funding. The scholarship provides for payment of tuition, books, lab fees and other college-related expenses. To be eligible, applicants must: Be under age 23 Be a dependent, unmarried child of active-duty personnel, Reserve Component members, National Guard and retired military members, survivors of service members who died while on active duty or survivors of individuals who died while receiving retired pay from the military Ensure that they and their sponsor are currently enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS database) Have a current dependent military ID card Be enrolled or plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university in the fall term (Students attending a community or junior college must be enrolled in a program of studies that allows them to transfer directly into a four-year program.)
