POSEY* and JAMES F. GOGGANS Department of Forestry THERE HAS BEEN considerable interest in growing Cupressus (cypress) in the Southeast for several years. The Agricultural Experiment Station, Auburn University, was the first institution in the Southeast to initiate work on the cy- presses in 1937, and since that time many states have introduced Cupressus in hope of finding a species suitable for Christmas tree production. In most cases seed for trial plantings were obtained from commercial dealers without reference to seed source or form of parent tree. Many plantings yielded a high proportion of columnar-shaped trees not suitable for the Christmas tree market. It is probable that seed used in Alabama and other Southeastern States came from only a few trees of a given geo- graphic source. -

Appalachians Southwest Geographic Range Montane chaparral is located from the Southern Cascades, through the Sierra Nevada, the Peninsular and Transverse Ranges and into Baja CA. Biophysical Site Description Primarily occurs at elevations where much of the precipitation occurs as snowfall above 1500m (4500ft). These locations are commonly on steep, exposed slopes with rocky or shallow soils, favoring south and west aspects in canyons, glaciated landscapes, recent volcanics and other areas with low site productivity/ shallow soils. Vegetation Description These are mosaics of woodlands with chaparral understories, shrub-dominated chaparral, or short-lived chaparrals with confier species invading if good seed source is available. Shrubs will often have higher densities than the trees which are more limited due to the rocky/thin soils. These can also be short duration chaparrals in previouslt forested areas that have experienced crown fires. Trees tend to have a scattered open canopy, or can be clustrered, over a usually continuous dense shrub layer. -

Kennedy, Maurice A. Chaffee, James F. Seitz, and Joy L. Harner U.S. Geological Survey and Donald O. Capstick U.S. Bureau of Mines STUDIES RELATED TO WILDERNESS Under the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964) and related acts, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have been conducting mineral surveys of wilderness and primitive areas. Areas officially designated as "wilderness," "wild," or "canoe" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report discusses the results of a mineral survey of the Cypress Roadless Area (A5213), Sequoia National Forest, Kern County, California. The area was classified as a further planning area during the Second Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) by the U.S. Forest Service, January 1979. SUMMARY A mineral resource appraisal of Cypress Roadless Area, Kern County, California was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1980-1982. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ CALIFORNIA CONIFERS: CONIFER COMMUNITIES OF THE SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS AND INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE FOR THE UCSC ARBORETUM AND BOTANIC GARDEN A senior internship project in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of BACHELOR OF ARTS in ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES by Erika Lougee December 2019 ADVISOR(S): Karen Holl, Environmental Studies; Brett Hall, UCSC Arboretum ABSTRACT: There are 52 species of conifers native to the state of California, 14 of which are endemic to the state, far more than any other state or region of its size. There are eight species of coniferous trees native to the Santa Cruz Mountains, but most people can only name a few. For my senior internship I made a set of ten interpretive signs to be installed in front of California native conifers at the UCSC Arboretum and wrote an associated paper describing the coniferous forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Signs were made using the Arboretum’s laser engraver and contain identification and collection information, habitat, associated species, where to see local stands, and a fun fact or two. While the physical signs remain a more accessible, kid-friendly format, the paper, which will be available on the Arboretum website, will be more scientific with more detailed information. The paper will summarize information on each of the eight conifers native to the Santa Cruz Mountains including localized range, ecology, associated species, and topics pertaining to the species in current literature. Southern California Endemic Habitats Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Synthesis An Important Note About this Document: This document represents an initial evaluation of vulnerability for endemic habitats based on expert input and existing information. Specifically, the information presented below comprises habitat expert vulnerability assessment survey results and comments, peer- review comments and revisions, and relevant references from the literature. The aim of this document is to expand understanding of habitat vulnerability to changing climate conditions, and to provide a foundation for developing appropriate adaptation responses. Executive Summary In this assessment, endemic habitats are considered as one collective habitat grouping, but directed comments are provided for the following systems of interest:1 serpentine, carbonate, gabbro, pebble plains, and clay lens. anran Forestry Department Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations GLOBAL FOREST RESOURCES ASSESSMENT COUNTRY REPORTS NITED TATES OF MERICA U S A FRA2005/040 Rome, 2005 FRA 2005 – Country Report 040 UNITED STATES OF AMERICA The Forest Resources Assessment Programme Sustainably managed forests have multiple environmental and socio-economic functions important at the global, national and local scales, and play a vital part in sustainable development. Reliable and up- to-date information on the state of forest resources - not only on area and area change, but also on such variables as growing stock, wood and non-wood products, carbon, protected areas, use of forests for recreation and other services, biological diversity and forests’ contribution to national economies - is crucial to support decision-making for policies and programmes in forestry and sustainable development at all levels. FAO, at the request of its member countries, regularly monitors the world’s forests and their management and uses through the Forest Resources Assessment Programme. This country report forms part of the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005 (FRA 2005), which is the most comprehensive assessment to date. More than 800 people have been involved, including 172 national correspondents and their colleagues, an Advisory Group, international experts, FAO staff, consultants and volunteers. Information has been collated from 229 countries and territories for three points in time: 1990, 2000 and 2005. The reporting framework for FRA 2005 is based on the thematic elements of sustainable forest management acknowledged in intergovernmental forest-related fora and includes more than 40 variables related to the extent, condition, uses and values of forest resources. -

Measuring the Health of the Mountain: A Report on Mount Tamalpais’ Natural Resources (2016) (Chapter 4 excerpts) SARGENT CYPRESS COMMUNITIES Cupressus sargentii Condition: Good Trend: No Change Confidence: Moderate WHY IS THIS RESOURCE INCLUDED? Sargent cypress communities occur as open, scrubby forests and woodlands associated with serpentine chaparral. They are relatively limited in distribution and globally rare. The “pygmy forest” of Sargent cypress along San Geronimo Ridge is a rare vegetation type that hosts several California Native Plant Society-listed and locally rare plant species. In the One Tam area of focus, this community is characterized by an understory of navarretias, Indian warrior (Pedicularis densiflora), jewelflowers (Streptanthus), and scattered to dense Mt. Tamalpais manzanita (Arctostaphylos montana ssp. montana, a California Native Plant Society 1B species, which are plants Rare, Threatened, or Endangered in California and elsewhere). Sargent cypress communities provide habitat for large ground cone (Kopsiopsis strobilacea) and pleated gentian (Gentiana affinis ssp. ovata), which are also locally rare. These communities are good indicators of wildfire and mechanical disturbance. Sargent cypress stands typically recruit new trees following stand-replacing wildland fires, making this a key disturbance process for their long-term persistence. Fire return intervals in Sargent cypress stands vary, but are typically multi-decadal. Too-frequent fires can threaten recruitment because individual trees need several years to mature and produce sufficient cones to create an adequate seedbank. Wildfire return intervals that are either too short (e.g., less than a decade) or too long (150+ years) can negatively impact this community. OVERALL CONDITION The One Tam area hosts approximately 366 acres of Sargent cypress. -

Spring 2014 Page 1 Botanic Garden News The Botanic Garden Volume 17, No. 1 of Smith College Spring 2014 Orchidelirium at Smith Madelaine Zadik K aren Yu ’16 is a STRIDE scholar who has worked with me since 2012 on educational projects and exhibitions at the Botanic Garden. As a first year, Karen learned about the workings of the Botanic Garden, our plant collections, and our various educational activities, including exhibit production. The plan was that by the end of her two-year STRIDE placement, she would produce an exhibit of her own. She had to hit the ground running, as the exhibit Botanical Printing: Artful Collaborations on Paper and Cloth opened just a month and a half after her arrival. Karen wrote label copy and press releases, learned mounting techniques, helped design the gallery layout with our modular walls, and learned how to use our unique hanging system in the Church Exhibition Gallery. For our next exhibit, From Petals to Paper: Poetic Inspiration from Flowers, Karen was involved in the many months of planning leading up to the installation in March 2013. When given a choice of possible exhibit topics for her own project, Karen chose to use a collection of orchid prints by artist Florence Helen Woolward to create an exhibit that would help illuminate the world of orchids for the visiting public. The prints are from Thesaurus Woolwardiae, Orchids of the Marquis of Lothian, which contained reproductions of 60 of Woolward’s orchid paintings. Woolward produced an impressive body of work, especially considering that she was never formally trained in either art or botany.
