CIRCLE 7-7470 FOR RELEASE Saturday or Sun­ day, September 12 or 13,1936 The Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53 Street, announces th irst exhibition of its 1936-37 season, Hew Horizons in American Art, which fell open to the public Wednesday, September 16 and will remain on view through Monday, October 12. The exhibition will consist of out­ standing work done since August 1935 by artists throughout the country on the Federal Art Project in the fields of mural painting, oils, viatercolors, sculpture, prints, posters, photographs, drawings and s ovor al hundr od watercolor plates. It will include / .. objects and will fill three and one-half floors of the Museum. The exhibition has been directed by Miss Dorothy C. Miller, Assistant Curator of .Painting and Sculpture of the Museum of Modern Art. The selections have been made without regard to regional representation, although many projects throughout the country will be included. Holger Cahill, Director of the Federal Art Project, believes that the support and stimulation of an interested public is as ne- cessar;/ to the artist as is a responsive audience to the actor. In his foreword to the catalog of Hew Horizons in American Art, he makes this clear. "An attempt to bridge the gap between the American artist and the American public has governed the entire program of the Federal Art Project," Mr. Cahill states. "For the first time in American art history a direct and sound relationship has been established between the American public and the artist. Community organizations of all kinds have asked for his work. In the discussions and interchange between the artist and the public concerning murals, easel paintings, prints, and sculptures for public buildings; through the arrangements for allbcatios of art in many forms to schools and libraries, an ac­ tive and often very human relationship has been created. The artist has become aware of every typo of community demand for art, and has had the prospect of increasingly larger audiences, of greatly exten­ ded public Interest. Now horizons have come Into view. American ar- •tists have discovered that they have work to do In the world. "The organization of fcha Fro joet has proceeded on the principle that it is not the oolitary genius but a sound general movement which maintains art as a vital, functioning part of any cultural scheme. Art 7* [$ not a matter of rare, occasional masterpieces; it is not merely decorative, a sort of unrelated accompaniment to life. In a genuine sonse it should have use; it should bo interwoven tfith the very stuff and toxturo of human experience, intensifying that experience, making it more profound, rich, clear, and coherent. This can bo accomplished only if the artist is functioning freely in relation to society, and if society VJants what he is able to offer. "It is fortunate that, under government auspices, an opportun­ ity for the development of significant nov; tendencies has boon provid- i ed during these crucial times. The outcome is full of promise for the future. Certainly there is no dearth of genuine talent in this coun- try-^talent of a rich order. Under the most difficult circumstances American artists have shovm themselves ready to.attack now problems and to make fresh adaptations. They are growing in 3taturo and in power. They have the technique, the discipline, and the impulse to carry American art to now heights. The question for the future is whether they may continue to maintain that sound relationship with a viide public which has been shown to be essential for a living art." The Federal Art Project was organized undor Mr. Cahillfs dir­ ection in August 1935. It employs throughout the country a total num­ ber of 5,300 artists and art teachers. Of this number 49$ are in the creative arts, at work upon murals, sculpture, easel painting and graphic arts. The rest arc employed in art education and applied art3, including the Index of American Design. To date, 434 murals have been completed and 55 are in progress, with sketches for many others under way. The Index of American Design, which is making a record in water- color and black-and-white drawings of all typos of original American dosign in the useful arts, has completod 3,500 plates. Among tho objects to be shown in Now Horizons in American Art, the exhibition opening September 16 at the Museum of Modern Art, will bo 48 oil paintings, 66 watercolors, 52 prints and about 40 works (paintings and sculpture) by children. The oldest artist represented in the exhibition is William Somraorj 70, of Ohio; the youngest, Dolores Wright, 6, of New York City. It focuses on Reconstructionist rhetorical strategies, their efforts to establish a liberal basis of religious authority, and theories of cultural production.     A NEW AGE FOR ARTISTS: THE BIRTH OF THE NEW DEAL ART MOVEMENT AND THE POLITICAL CONNOTATIONS OF THE COlT TOWER MURALS Timothy Rottenberg Prior to 1934, public art did not exist in the United States ofAmerica. Occasionally, paintings by individual artists would achieve success and break out of the art gallery and private commission sphere into the public eye, but visibility was not widespread. With the construction of Coit Tower in San Francisco, the creation of the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) in ‘934, and the unemployment of artists due to the Great Depression, a unique synchronistic moment came about when the birth of public art in America was forged. For the first time in American history, the PWAP gave artists the opportunity to reflect local and national politics through their own political lens using a medium that was meant for mass consumption by the public.i In January of there was nothing exciting about the San Fran cisco skyline. The city’s two tallest buildings stood at a stout 435 feet, and lay inconspicuously in the valley of the financial district, dwarfed even by the seven natural hills of San Francisco that surrounded them. With the Golden Gate and Bay bridges only in the earliest stages of construction, San Francisco lacked architectural individuality. Appropriately, Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a wealthy and eccentric San Francisco resident, desired beautification for the city she so admired. Despite having been born in Maryland and living in France for a number of years, the allure of the I believe this thesis to be wholly original in the field of historical study on the Public Works Administration as it related to the field of public art in America.

Addressing American murals in a historic context, as socially engaged art, and examining the history of the community of Grove Hall this thesis evaluates the Grove Hall murals in relation to their value to the Grove Hall community as agents for social change. It reached its zenith in the 1930s, and provides the context – artistically, socially, politically and economically – for the two murals considered in this thesis. Such murals were modern in their focus on contemporary, usually urban issues, industrial subject matter, the image of the blue collar worker and its links to the Art Deco movement – “that vehicle of moderate nationalism” as architectural historian, Michael Windover, put it.

    Bernard Zakheim, Polish American Artist of California By Robert S. Sherins, MD PGSCA BULLETIN, 2014 Bernard Zakheim, born in 1896 in Warsaw, Poland, became a greatly admired artist in California. Among his most acknowledged works were the 14 frescoes created at the University of California, San Francisco, 1936-1939, in which he depicted the transition of medical practices in California from the earlier medieval and mythical methods that evolved into the modern scientifically-based practices of healthcare at UCSF. This year is the celebration of that excellence in education and standards of medicine as UCSF acknowledges its Sesquicentennial (1864-2014). However, Zakheim’s artworks included more than 10,000 paintings and sculptures depicting his life experiences in Poland and America, during which he was traumatized by the prevailing anti-Semitism, loss of 300 members of his family in the Holocaust, and rejection by his family because of his pursuit of art instead of continuing the 10- generational ancestral tradition as a rabbi. The author, Robert S. Sherins, MD, alumnus of UCSF, School of Medicine, Class of 1963, has published a thesis on the subject of Bernard Zakheim’s artwork and biography, emphasizing the famous frescoes created at UCSF in 1936-1939 that were painted on-site in Cole and Toland Halls. The Zakheim’ art projects were sponsored by SERA, the California “State Emergency Relief Administration.” The manuscript contains 824 illustrated pages in 8-volumes, and a bibliography. This work will be archived at UCSF, Kalmanovitz Library, Special Collections and Archives and made freely available to the public. Copies of the thesis also are archived at the California State History Library in Sacramento, California; UCLA Chancellor’s Archives and the UCLA Biomedical Library; and the Huntington Library, Rare Book Collections, in San Marino, California.

The interview took place in Santa Cruz, California, and was conducted by Mary Fuller McChesney for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Mrs. McChesney's husband, Robert McChesney, was also present. Suzanne Scheuer and Mary Fuller McChesney have reviewed the transcript and have made corrections and emendations. SUZANNE SCHEUER: I got my art training first at the California school of Arts and Crafts when it was still in Berkeley and graduated with, first, a fine arts major, and then later I went back and got a teacher's credential. Ten years later I went to the California School of Fine Arts and studied mural painting with Ray Boynton. I was there two and a half or three years. MRS.
