ABOUT THIS PLAN The aim of the Integrated Human Settlements Five- Year Plan is to offer the reader an understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the City of Cape Town in terms of providing for the housing needs of its steadily growing and increasingly urbanised population, as well as the vision and strategies of the City’s Human Settlements Directorate. This plan is closely aligned with, and contributes to, the City of Cape Town’s overarching five-year Integrated Development Plan and has been developed to enable the realisation of the City’s five key strategic pillars or focus areas. This 2016/17 review is the last in the series of reviews for the five-year period July 2012 to June 2017. Just as the Human Settlements Directorate does not operate in isolation from the rest of the City of Cape Town, this plan should be read in the context of the greater vision and objectives of the current administration. In this way, it forms but one component of a suite of plans, publications and reports that the City produces annually. However, these potentially transformative thrusts have been eclipsed by more conservative, neoliberal developmental trajectories.     DIRECTIONS FROM CAPE TOWN Take the N1 highway out of the city and then take the N7 highway in the direction of Malmesbury. Continue on the N7 for approx. 220km. Just after you start seeing the Clanwilliam Dam, look out for the off-ramp (to the left). At the T-junction you turn right to travel into the town of Clanwilliam. Stay on this road, passing two petrol stations on the left hand side. (Do NOT turn off to the right into the Main Road.) Stay on this road to travel out of the town in the direction of the mountain range. Approx 2km from the town (after a small hill), you turn left onto the road with a green signpost for Klawer. Look at your speedometer and note your kilometers. Approx 3.1 km on this road, you will see our gate & sign on the right hand side. Drive through our gate and up to the lodge. DIRECTIONS FROM THE WINELANDS There are a variety of routes depending on whether you are coming.If you are coming from Stellenbosch, take the R304 north. This road crosses over the main N2 highway and continues north to Malmesbury where the R304 merges with the R302 to continue as the R302. When you get to the town of Malmesbury, you follow signs for the N7 north towards Mooreesburg, PIketberg. Stay on the N7 for 158km and when you get to Clanwilliam, you follow the directions below…. In addition, the article continued, ‘the new owners could, if they wished ... name the peak after themselves as the Sentinel was not a registered trademark. Auctioneers had reportedly turned down two offers, including one for R15 1 million’ (News24 2009). Not surprisingly, alarm spread through Hangberg, the major settlement on the Sentinel Mountain. On 16 July 2009, the morning of the auction, a crowd of 300 protesters from Hangberg gathered outside the site of the sale, the Chapman’s Peak Hotel, led by the Hout Bay Civic. According to Isaac James, a Hout Bay Civic leader, they wanted to ‘sit down with the auctioneers' to convince the owners to halt plans to sell the prized real estate (News24 2009). However, once it was clear that the auction was proceeding, the protest became confrontational. Some protesters began to throw stones, and the police opened fire on the crowd, showering them with rubber bullets and teargas. This confrontation quickly brought the auction to a halt. In the aftermath of this event, it transpired that it was not the whole of the Sentinel Mountain for sale, which would have included Hangberg on its lower reaches.

This park is South Africa’s only urban open-access park and has been declared a World Heritage Site. This thesis is an anthropological and historical examination of the past and present conservation of the Cape Peninsula . I provide an overview of the relationship between the urban environment and the Cape Peninsula aiming to illustrate the produced character of the mountains and its mediation in power relations. This study of custodianship reveals that protecting and conserving the Cape Peninsula is shaped by the politics of the urban and natural environment as well as by the experience of living in the city.

    SEWAGE SLUDGE Status Quo Report 2020/21 Executive Summary The Western Cape Integrated Waste Management Plan (WCIWMP) 2017 identified the need for a better understanding of how sewage sludge is managed in the Province. This supports Goal 2, a key activity of the WCIWMP, which aims to develop a guideline on the beneficiation of treated sewage sludge. The WCIWMP 2017 provides organic waste diversion targets which will be one of the drivers in ensuring the sustainable end-use of sewage sludge. This Status Quo Report on sewage sludge from municipal wastewater treatment works, details the current management practices as well as highlighting the challenges and opportunities that exist at municipalities with regards to sewage sludge management. A questionnaire was drafted and circulated to municipalities and other sub- directorates within the Department to obtain input to the draft questionnaire as prt of survey. The final questionnaires were then sent to all municipalities with a feedback response rate of 80%, from a 107 wastewater treatment plants, which will form the basis of this report. Analysis of the feedback gained indicates that most Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTWs) dispose of their sewage sludge by land farming (22%) or to general (20%) or hazardous landfills (10%). 22% of WWTWs currently stockpile sewage sludge while 11% using their sewage sludge for composting/agricultural/irrigation use. Landfill airspace is declining across the Province and more beneficiation options need to be considered and implemented where possible. In the 2021/22 financial year the Department will continue work on wastewater sewage sludge and is planning to develop a guideline for the beneficiation of treated sewage sludge.
